Post by: tshort on October 09, 2003, 05:41:45 AM
Anyone know where I might find a wrecked SV?  My motor may need replacing.  Thanks.!

Any reason why it can't be rebuilt, Tom?

Sometimes cheaper to buy used than to rebuild. Tom, if you find one, can I have the old one?  :D

As and when I end up needing one, it'll be becuase the one I've got exploded. :D

Seriously, after considering the rebuild costs, I gotta believe I can get a fresh one from a wrecked street bike for about $1k or so, and then I'm good to go for another season.  Bic pens and Sv motors...use em and toss em. ;)

Here is the trick...

Street motors don't necessarily make the best "race" motors, but they do make ok replacement motors.

SV street rider buys a bike.  He breaks it in according to the manufacturers instructions.  Really, the manufacturer's instructions leave you with a bike that doesn't seal the rings very well.

Race bikes get a lot of heat early on and seal quick.  Street bikes may never seal.

So, if you buy a street SV, it might be poorly sealed...then you've got to hope that they guy actually checked or changed his oil...

Make sense?

Good question.  Does factory vs. race breakin really matter on a low mileage 67hp motor? I wonder how much hp you'd sacrifice on a small engine like that? I totally agree that you may not know what you're getting.

Anyway, Tom, I'll hunt around with some sources to see if they have anything.  Last summer I bought a wrecked SV w/ 944 miles on it for $2,200.  There wasn't much value in the street parts.  I probably only recouped about $500 for the forks and some fairings.  Could have been at least another $300 for the wheels but I kept them for spares.  That's still $1400 cost and it was one of the cheapest salvages I've seen.
Do you know what went wrong with the engine?  Just curious.

Well, once the break in is done, it's done.  Might be a couple few HP, but it might mean the difference in sealing over the life of the engine.

Tom, give me a call: 414-828-7500.

If my bike doesn't sell soon, I will probably part out.

Nate, you're selling?

Yes. Need $ for the business and School. If it works, business $ will buy me another SV in the future. Financials were not looking good for next year, much less even racing. So, instead of having the bike sit all year, I'm gonna sell it and use the $ to try and make more.  :)

I WILL race next year at least a couple times on my CB750 in MWSM, probably.

Business is to the point where it needs a bunch of money dumped in to go anywhere, so I'm gonna do it. It's basically all or nothing time, you know?

Yeah, baby!  CB750.  Too bad you couldn't have bought Schock's CBR600F2...Not sure if it was sold yet, but he only wanted $1500 for it with extra wheels and an extra motor that needs a rebuild.

Did you get Kim's info?

Alas, Dave - there will be no more talk of lightweights in the Twilight camp, at least until AFTER the '04 season.  The rider needs to 'get over herself' and step up to the challenge at hand.   8)

I have a complete motor with undercut transmission.

$1,500 or $1k +exchange with blown motor. (depending on severity of blowup...)
