Title: Tech Questions
Post by: nafterclifen on December 26, 2010, 05:12:35 PM
I've begun preparing my 04 GSXR 600 to do some racing next year. I have a few questions I'm hoping some of you folks can answer.

1. Is Engine Ice allowed?
2. If I'm an Amateur and my bike is yellow, can I simply just put the vinyl numbers on the front of the nose with a plate?
3. Are ride-side engine cases required? I have one on the left (stator) side already.
4. Does anything outside of the list below, NEED to be wired or siliconed?

Pinch Bolts on Forks
Front Caliper Mounting Bolts
Rear Caliper Mounting Bolts
Rear Axle Nut
Oil Drain Plug
Oil Fill Cap
Oil Filter

not sure, don't know of many that use it (in fact don't know anyone that does).. have read where it can break down over time. Horrible for fuel system..

Been using fuel foam for years, just not the same foam.
And you will probably have to outline your #plate in a black line, I don't quite understand, but tech inspectors seem to want it

Melka was saying was required to be wired. You can wire anything you want for your saftey if yuo think it will get loose.

Just to be safe, you might want to safety wire the safety wire too.

Safety wiring your butt to the seat has worked out pretty good for you, hasn't it Noid?

5.2.16 All engine, transmission and final drive unit drain plugs and filler caps must be visibly safety wired.

the radiator isn,'t an "engine, transmission and final drive unit" is it?

If it has the potential to leak if it comes loose, safety wire it!!!

Radiator is not but the drain bolt on the engine case is - that is what I was referring to originally

Melk-man said 'coolant drain', I thought that should be clarified.

The radiator cap is independent of the engine, yes.

Ok, so just to clarify...If I bring my 04 GSXR 600 to tech at a CCS race event with the oil drain plug, oil fill cap, and oil filter safety wired then they will pass me according to section 5.2.16 in the rulebook?

those things need wired, but there is more. Yes, the coolant DRAIN plug needs wired (my bad). You need case covers too im pretty sure.

I don't know of a coolant DRAIN plug that exist on my motor or radiator.

Depending on model it may be on the lower coolant tube or on the waterpump cover.

Read the entire rule book. That was one sentence to clarify a comment.

You have potentially 2 drain plugs in the motor - one on the zuki's is usually the bottom bolt holding the "neck" on the water pump exit - some bikes also have a drain in the block.....

I was not asking if the drain plug was the ONLY thing that needed to be safety wired. I wanted to know what else was required to be safety wires AS PER section 5.2.16 of the rulebook. I'm aware that other things need to be done besides safety wire in order to pass tech. You guys are tough...

My rules are:

1. If it EVER comes or came loose then it gets safety wired.

2. If it could hurt me or anyone else on the track if it came loose it gets safety wired.

A lot of people think that safety wiring is a pain so do only what they have to. I look at it a different way. How long does it take to go over your bike before every race weekend and make sure every nut and bolt is tight? All I have to do is look to see if the safety wire is intact, if it isn't broken then the fastener is tight. Makes safety inspections really quick and easy.

Another thing you can do;

After you have gone over every nut n bolt on your bike, put a small paint line across the fastener
and whatever it fastens, ie; case covers, clip-on's, fork clamps, ect...

That way you can SEE if it has moved.

BTW; The above suggestion is for NON-Criticle components that don't require safety wire...
