Title: swapping out rear shock springs
Post by: TZDeSioux on April 16, 2003, 12:36:23 PM
Anyone know an easy way perhaps using tools you can buy at a local hardware store to compress the spring enough to remove the collar on an Ohlins rear shock? I would normally have a shop do this but I'm strapped for time.

Now do you mean shock or fork?

For a shock you are better off using the proper tool. If your Ohlins has a remote preload adjuster, you will need a proper spring tool. Most cheap (threaded rod with hooks) are meant for car springs and would be tough to use on a bike shock. I have changed shock springs using a cheap hydraulic press (might need special adapters). I have seen shock springs come loose and fly accross the room.

You are going to be at Blackhawk on the 19th and/or the 20th? I have access to a spring tool at a shop (as long as the shop is open) if you have time before or after Blackhawk (I am about an hour from the track - WI).

Brian,
I appreciate the offer but I'm going to swing my 4&6 after work today. Jim says he'll do it for $10 and they're about 10 minutes from me :)

I will be able to sleep much better tonight knowing you are using the proper tool for the job.
