Title: Invest in your self...
Post by: Super Dave on May 05, 2002, 06:37:49 AM
OK, this is kind of an advertisement, but bear with me.

I have a school in the Midwest where I work with new racers, sport riders, and experienced road racers.  Been road racing for a long time now.

Anyway, one can throw away gobs of money of lots of different things in this sport.  Few invest money in themselves in the form of someone telling them how to ride, or just what not to waste money on.

Spend a couple of hundred dollars on a good quality school and create a relationship with them so that you don't have to have an expensive learning process.  Your local school isn't helpful?  Find another one.

Hopefully, you checked out the website.  Been road racing for fifteen years now.  Did AMA stuff, championships, whatever.  Started teaching schools for CCS in 1993, and then started my own independent school (Visionsports, Inc.) in 1999.

I personally have no depth perception because of an eye problem I had when I was very young.  I have no family members that race.  I had no great sponsorship behind me.  Dale Quarterley, a former privateer Superbike rider, took interest in me and worked with me.  I learned a lot from him, and I have ideas of my own too.

Sponsorship...

Gets tricky since there are only so many spots available to have students.  Yes, there are racers that I work with on a sponsorship basis, but that's for a discount.

You're from the SW?  Isn't there a good program down there to help you?  The commute to northern Illinois might be a long way....

Usually make a pilgrimage to Daytona in the spring and fall.

Currently, no.

So, maybe I should ask, is there a problem in getting good help for current racers?

I took my school (1987) and that was about it.  Learn from there.  I did have the great opportunity to work with Dale Quarterley for a peroid of time, and some other good people.  But there were scads of people that gave opinions and ideas that wasted my time, and my money.

I guess I started my school independent of CCS to try to fill that need up here in the Midwest.  Even then, our CCS races are quite segregated from the WERA stuff that happens to the south and east.

After four years, it appears like my local region riders have begun to figure out what I do.  Now we have a good following.

I won't claim to have all the answers, but I'm willing to give an honest straight forward thought.

I always kinda liked the idea of being a riding instructor... gimmie a few years more of experience, let me run ProAMA for a year or so, and I'll be the first one to sign up to open up a "Visionsports West Coast" operation  ;)

Bob Karol at Sears Point is the man already out west.  Race GP bikes in the 60's, has a teaching degree in Mechanical Engineering, worked for NASA (Rocket Scientist), and is still the Senior Instructor for the AFM.

Not sure if anyone can fill his shoes....
