Title: Brian Hall's Status from University of Kansas Medical Hospital
Post by: J Farrell / Speed Tech Motorsp on April 27, 2008, 10:59:03 PM
I'm starting this thread for Brian Hall and his condition.
I will be updating this thread periodically as we know more about his condition.

I am currently at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City with Mike Hall (Brian's father).

Brian crashed today at Topeka Raceway in the ASRA Superbike race. He was in 2nd place on the forth lap cresting the hill in Turn 1 when he tucked the front end over the crest of the hill and slid into an unprotected wall on the outside going down the hill into turn 1.

According to our data on that bike he was reaching 150mph at the crest of that hill. He slid about 200'? and contacted the wall at a very high rate of speed while sliding. He slid back first into the wall and slid along way for quite awhile. Medical crew attended to him and brought him back to the Medical station where he complained of major back pain & pain in his right leg. He had a hard time laying on the stretcher and was in considerable amount of pain.
I helped him get out of his suit with the medics and he bled a considerable amount inside his suit. They delivered him to Stormont Vail hospital in Topeka, KS.
Once he got there they did an x-ray on him confirmed he broke his right lower leg near his ankle. He also seriously damaged his bowel area and was bleed from there pretty bad. Stormont determind that he needed serious surgery and that he might also be bleeding internally and there might be vertebrae damage.
It's 9:45pm Sunday night and he is still in surgery. We do not know the extent of the damage yet but will let everyone know as soon as the information becomes available.
He will most likely be here for at least 1 week. I'm staying here with Mike until we find out more news on his situation.
If anyone wants to contact me send me a PM from CCS or send me an email at speedtechracing@yahoo.com

I'm personally pretty upset about the fact that we were supposed to run the new configuration and it didn't happen.
I was at this track once before in 1995 and didn't remember much of the condition of the track for safety. As soon as I arrived on Thursday I saw how crazy the wall was in turn 1 not only where Brian hit it but coming up to the hill on the right side with now air fence or protection anywhere.
My understanding is that we were going to run the new configuration that was made for this reason and it didn't happen.
This track is dangerous and it took this to happen to prove that it is dangerous.
The riders know what is safe or dangerous NOT the guys who sit in the office. It's obvious that motorcycles and walls don't mix. This track needs to change or we shouldn't race there until it does.

New update:
Doctors just came out and informed us that he has a serious break in his ankle leg bone area. He will be having surgery tomorrow on his leg/ankle at 10am. They are inserting a permanent plate in his ankle with screws.

His internal conditions are ok and the surgery was successful. He suffered a severe bowel injury and has to have a couple more surguries to clean things out.

We will be seeing him in a little bit to talk with him.

Matt Hall dropped off Brians trophies with his girlfriend tonight. It was nice to see him and thanks Matt.
I'll let everyone know what he says in a little bit.

My prayers are with Brian and his family.

I saw where Brian Lacy hit the wall, was it the same area, or somewhere else?

His back is ok after xrays.
I'm not familiar with Brian Lacy's crash. It was after cresting the top of the hill just as he was getting on the brakes for T1.

I'm trying to boot up our data acquisition screen but it was damage heavily in the crash.
I can see what might have happened.
Matt Hall was behind him a short ways and said all he saw was a puff of smoke come from the front tire as he crested the hill. He also saw (along with several team witnesses) that he hit the wall back first.
His bike was destroyed in the crash. If you see the front end it might give you a mental picture of how hard he hit the wall.

We still haven't seen him yet. We are waiting to talk with him.

He did say that he tucked the front end and possibly got on the brakes too hard as he crested the hill and locked the front tire.
More news as we find out....

My thoughts and prayers are with Brian as well and wish him a speedy recovery. Unfortunate that this had to happen to show the officials why the new configuration is safer.

It's been a bad 2 weeks for us as we had a off roading incident on the way back from Barber AMA Nationals on I-65.
Mike fell asleep behind the wheel just north of Indianapolis and we barely survived a near rollover incident. The pulling truck was heavily damaged and the new trailer (just 2 weeks old) was also damaged. The trailer was still useable but the truck needed serious repair.

Brian, Mike and I were all in the truck when it happened. I was watching a movie on my lap top in the passenger seat while Mike was driving & Brian was sleeping in the back seat when we went in the middle of the highway.
Talk about freaky. I feel the truck bouncing around and I look up to see us going in the ditch in the middle of the highway. I reached over and grabbed to wheel and steered the truck as it was about to jackknife while pulling a 24' loaded trailer. We took out appoximately 40-50 metal stakes that hold the steel cable inbetween the highway. We were able to pull the truck back up the highway and get it pulled over on the right side of the road. That happened at 12:30 am on Monday morning last week.
The truck was severly damaged on the left side and the trailer was damaged on the front and whole left side. The bikes where fine as the strapless stands did their job.

Thanks to the Stilles who drove front 57 over to 65 to pick us up as we were standed on the highway at a truck stop. They got us back to chicago. I was having hallucenations of driving off the road again while trying to fall asleep in their RV.
They went down on Monday all day to pick up the trailer & come back with another truck while I went back to Oshkosh to work at my shop. They got back Monday night and I drove back down to their place to pick up his B bike for some work we had a engine problem and it needed to be rebuilt before leaving for practice on Wednesday for Topeka. I pulled off a couple of sleepless nights building his bike & working my shop.

Driving out to Topeka was tough for me as I left at  6pm Wednesday night with my amatuer rider Jaegger & his wife Kristine with my trailer. I couldn't sleep before my drivng shift as I was hallucinating again about crashing in the ditch so I got no sleep from Wednesday 8am to Thursday night at 10pm after practice day in Topeka! 38hrs of staying awake was too much for me.
We had a pretty good weekend as Brian brought home 11 awards and Tommy Girard placed very well on his new bikes. Brian did very well this weekend at Topeka as he went 2 seconds faster per lap than last season here.
It's been a very long couple weeks for the team and from what it looks like Brian won't be racing for at least 2-3 months as he heals his injuries. My wishes go out to him & his family for a speedy recovery.
Special thanks to Paul Ducato, Matt Hall & family, Jaeger & Kristine Freundenthal for their help at the track & hospital.

More updates very soon on Brian.....

We just got home and it was heavy on my mind, i wasn't near the incident but heard the radio calls from the corner worker station.  Best wishes to Brian.

Prayers out to Brian.  I saw his bike, and it speaks to how hard he must have hit.  If anyone saw video of Higbee hitting the wall at Iowa Speedway in MotoST last year, that might give you an impression of what Brian suffered.

God speed a quick recovery Brian.

He is being prepped for his 2nd surgery which is at 10am. They are checking out his stitchings from last night and preparing him for surgery on his ankle.
They said last night that there is still a possibility of of spinal damage as they have not been able to look at the spine yet. Hopefully all is well there.
We are waiting to see him before he goes in for his surgery.
Thanks to all the messages for help for Brian's family as they go through this time.

More updates to follow...

Brian Lacey has a punctured lung and was released from ICU on SAT morning. I worked with Mike Casey and the HPT staff to get his belongings packed up and stored into a secure location on the grounds with the help of one of my pit crew. No word on
his release or current condition though.

What I heard from the Bill was the old config was ran because the earth was too soft to get certain other walls removed which posed even More threat than the "old" config

No fun at all hearing any of this

Heal Quick Brian(s)

I pray that God will guide the doctors with wisdom as they do the diagnosis and skill as they do the surgeries.  I pray that God will heal Brian quickly and give him courage and determination as he goes through the rehab and recovery.

I don't really know you Brian and I don't think you know me.  But you were such an encouragement to me as I watched you test on Thursday and race hard all weekend.  I'll be praying for you brother and I look forward to when I can watch you out there schooling the rest of us again.

Wow, really sory to hear about this.  Brian is a class act and a definite asset to our sport.   Odly enought we did not hear about this until I read this post.  We left the track around 4 pm yesterday.

One of the LW AM riders (Jim Berard) went off in T3 and has an injured hand & shoulder - he and his driving partner made it safely back to Chicago around 6 am this morning.

Best Wishes for a speedy recovery Brian!!

Man I hate to here this. My thoughts and prayers are with you Brian and your family. I have a question when it comes to track safety. Does the CCS have a safety committy made up of riders and officials that go to tracks and make reccomendations about the safety of each track. I know the AMA has one. Also who is responsable to have air fences at the tracks. Does the track have their own or does the CCS have them.  I hope Brian has a speedy and successful recovery.

CCS has their own Airfence, and most tracks have some as well.  If you want to talk safety though, let's do it in a different thread and keep this focused on Get Well's for the guys who fell down this weekend please.

Thank you.

More updates!
Good news so far. He is stable and is through the hardest part of it all.
We are back in his room after his successful surgery on his ankle.
He broke his right fibula about 3" up from the ankle joint. They plated & screwed that together. He aso broke a chunk of his inside or outside ankle ball I believe. They made a special plate & screwed it all back together. The surgeons were very happy with the ankle & how it went back together.

His first surgery went successful as well on his rectum. He has a massive bruise on his rearend from smacking the wall. He remembers everything and never lost concisiousness during the crash. He is in a great deal of pain and his color is very yellow from the medication.
His tounge looks very gnarly. I guess I would have bit my tounge too!
His wife Mara just got here a couple hours ago and will be taking care of him. Good thing she is a RN!
She is not used to taking care of people that she cares about deeply so she had a bit of a time seeing him but things are going good now.

I just talked to Brian for the first time. He seems pretty good. We will see in a few days hows things come along.

It is definately going to be awhile as in months before he will be operating normally again.

New update after checking his left ankle just now his wife told the doctors about a possilble broken ankle on his left side. The just transfered him to a different bed and are now sending him back to Xray to check on his left leg & ankle. I got a good look at it and it is bruised horribly bad. Hopefully it is just a sprain.

Brian did mention that he couldn't believe how fast the wall came up & how hard he hit it. He also stated he isn't happy about the wall not being protected.

More updates as they come.

He says thank you to everyone who has sent messages for him, Brian, his family, & myself appreciate the pouring out of help & support we have been receiving from everyone. It is great to know what an awesome racing commuity we have and how we care about each other.

It's probably too early to call or visit yet as he just got settled in his room.

Mike & I are back at the hotel. His wife Mara will be staying with him for the night. They gave him a private room.
I asked him if he would like to take personal calls from everyone, he said possibly tomorrow afternoon.
He is going in for a checkup tomorrow on his lower region where he will be under again for that. He should be back awake by early afternoon.

I will let everyone know when they can call & possilbly stop by to visit him. Visiting might be ok in a day or two. He needs all of your support right now to help him forget all of this bad memory.

I'm driving the truck & trailer back tomorrow sometime to Chicago. I'm needing a ride from Chicago to Oshkosh as I have no car to drive from there.

He was awake and attentive to her conversation with him which is great considering the wreck. She stopped by to make sure he was getting the best treatment and he is. He is going down for more lab work this morning at 8:00am and will not be back until 10:30 or so she stated.

Will someone start a discussion about airfences and their necessity at all tracks. I'm not a racer, just one of the moms. I do know that a new configuration should have been run at Topeka. You guys speak out! Without you guys & gals the tracks can't draw a crowd. Every possible safety issue should be in place, cuz as the riders meetings always remind s you that this is an dangerously inherent sport. In my opinion, there has been too many serious accidents at the same track & in the same spot. Something should be looked at. Agsin, being a Mom i do concern myself with safety issues, but all of you have become a part of my family over the past few years. Can we do something here?

Sorry about not updating today.
I just got home & man what a long day that was. I took all of Brian's stuff back to his dads place and Paul Krause (A.J. Krause's dad) gave me a ride home with the trailer we need to repair.. Thanks for all the invites of taking me home from Mike's house. Your support for Brian, his family, and I have been awesome. You guys rock. Thanks to everyone for all the offers so far.

I do have more updates to announce.
Well Brian went into surgery this late morning / early afternoon. After inspecting the damage again in his bottom end (what I will now call it for future referance) They determinded that he has severe damage down there & it will take more time & attention that previously thought.
He is required to stay in hospital care for 1-2 more weeks. He is far from home right now and his family is currently trying to have him transported to a local hospital in their area to make it easier on them.
They are aranging this to possibly happen by this weekend hopefully. It will be too hard to move him home in the condition that he is in.
He has a new boot on his left foot to stabilize his ankle injury on his left ankle which is very heavliy sprained.
His right leg is in a surgical cast that will be removed in 2 weeks to remove stitches then a new cast will be put on. He is not to put any weight on his ankle for 12 weeks! They need to make sure it heels properly.

His bottom end is in pretty bad shape but should in time heal properly and I will leave it at that. No other internal injuries, just a very sore back and completely bruised body.
Plain & simple he is lucky to be alive if you ask me. I'm glad he didn't go in head first.
Brian is being a trooper about it. Once the meds are weened off the pain will set in and its going to be a hard few months for sure.

I left today at 10am or so & I just got home. Honestly it was hard to leave him & his family there. I was there for them as much I could be. I couldn't help but cry for the first hour or so when I left driving home. I feel very bad for him & his pain he is in.
I pray that he makes a full recovery and can return doing what him & his father love doing.

I'm going down to his place in the next week or so with some friends before he gets home & making ramps for his stairs at his house so he can manuver a wheel chair much easier.  If anyone is interested in helping out in this let me know. I'll let everyone know when I'll be going down there to do that.
I'll post a few more pics I have from today. I'll get some pics of the bike tomorrow to put up too.

New update: I just got off the phone with Mara. She said its maybe possible for him to get transfered closer to home by this weekend to Barrington area near Schaumburg, IL.
He will take visitors if anyone want to see him but please call first before going to make sure he is not in surgery or sleeping. He will be going in again for surgery or check up on his bowel area again tomorrow sometime.
His direct room # is (913) 588-5102. They are taking phone calls if you would like to call him.
Please no calls after 8:30pm or before 9am as he needs rest and visitation time is over then anyways.

He should be getting an ambulance ride back home when he goes back.
I have had many offers of help for building ramps for his steps at his house. I'm thinking possibly next week sometime to have this done. I'll let you all know when as I get more time to free up from my crazy busy schedule.

Mara also said full recovery time is around 6 months and that the pain is really kicking in today and he is very sore and out of it. He doesn't get much sleep at night as they still check up on him all night long.

If anyone wants to contact me send me an email at: speedtechracing@yahoo.com or call my cell phone at (920) 216-0780.

Brian, take your time and heal well. Wish I could help in some way to ease your pain but all I can do is say a prayer that you're still with us and the injuries are'nt any worse than they are.

I'll be in touch and when you're feeling a little better and want to get out of the house we'll come down and dinner is on us.

Mike......I know you were scared when this happened. I wish I could have been there for you but know that our thoughts and prayers go out to you and the rest of the family as well.

I can't imagine the toll on the human body... I don't know Brian, only by reputation, but from what I hear he's a heck of a guy! Wishing a speedy recovery.

I hope it's okay that I post this - the forks from his bike. It shows the force of how hard he hit.

Latest news:
I have just set up a donation to get Brian home thread. Read about it on the Racing Discussion page.

Brian is currently in PT. He is trying to sit up & get on his feet with a walker. He has one more check up on his bowel later today where he will get put under for one last time for awhile hopefully. He is in a lot of pain still and they have changed his medication to help that a little bit. He feels very weak & tired as his body is trying to heal from the shock.

More updates to follow later this afternoon.

Also: I will have a bunch of little 69 stickers made up for anyone at Blackhawk next weekend if they want them for their bikes. Were running them on our team bikes.

More updates: Very recent development...

He is currently having complications in surgery. He had another surgery tonight on his rectum area. During surgery he started losing blood quickly. They had to give him 2 transfusions during it.
The doctors believed to have the bleeding under control and put him in the recovery room.
As they went out to tell Mara (his wife) of the complications and that he should be ok another nurse came out to say he is back in surgery as he is bleeding again.
It is believed from what I know as a internal bleeding problem. They gave him another transfusion while trying to stop the bleeding. It's believed that a blood vessel broke on the inside of the rectum area?
I was told to say prayers.

I'll keep you informed.

For anyone that would wish to do say a prayer...

Lord, I pray for my friend because your Word says I should pray for his healing. I believe you hear this earnest prayer from my heart and that it is powerful because of your promise. I have faith in you to heal my friend, but I also trust in the plan you have for his life. Lord, I don't always understand your ways, and why my friend has to suffer, but I trust you. I ask that you look with mercy and grace toward my friend. Nourish his spirit and soul in this time of suffering and comfort him with your presence. Let my friend know you are there with him through this difficulty. And may you be glorified in his life and also in mine.

Well:
Good news! He made it through. I found out at around 1am. What was supposed to be a 30min operation turned into an all night deal with many complications.
He is currently in stable condition and in his IC room.
I believe he had 4 transfusions of blood last night.

He has got to be drained physically.
I would ask for the moment that nobody calls at this time as he needs rest and so does his family.

More updates today as I get them.

Thanks again for all your prayers.

Lastest news!
The bike Brian was riding had a fully equipt Data Acquisition System on it. It was believed to be broke from the crash. We were just able to retrieve the data from it.
After studying the data we realized that there is a bump in the track which made the front forks compress approx 43mm in .19 of a second. After he hit the bump the forks extended which caused a loss of traction from less weight over the front tire. The tire then started locking up which caused it to tuck sideways and he went down.
According to the data he slid 238 ft after the front brake lever contacted the ground. When the bike hit the wall it was going 116.8 mph. We lost data after that because from the impact to the wiring harness it tore out the power & ground wires in a tiny harness.
We were able to reconnect the wires and retrive the data from the logger.

Here is a picture you can click on to see the data we have. I saved the screen to show the speed he was going when he hit the wall. Brian was 5-10 ft behind the bike the whole way to the wall.
As you can see he hit it very very fast. From the time the bike hit the ground to impact it only took 1.5 seconds.
I am still reviewing the data tonight to see what else I can find.

The data shows a normal lap on the bottom set of data on each row. The lap he crashed was the top set of #'s.

Went to see Brian last night, he's actually in pretty good spirits considering his painfull condition and the long road of recovery ahead.  There are still some unknowns when it comes to a full recovery but he is in good physical condition and has age on his side.

He and his family really appreciate everyone's prayers and well wishes.  Keep pulling for him as he needs all the support he can get.

I would like to thank everyone for all their support this weekend at Blackhawk Farms with their donations to help Brian & his family. We raised over $500 on Saturday through donations.

If anyone else would like to donate to Brian Hall I will send you a sticker for $5 mailed to your house. Send me a PM with your address information. Send the $5 or more donation to the Red Flag Fund. I believe you can also send via paypal. I will get the info on this tomorrow & post it up.

I talked to Mike today and he says Brian is doing good. He might possibly be let out of the hospital later this coming week. He is able to use crutches possibly so the building ramp project might not have to happen. He will use crutches to get into & out of the house but would use a wheelchair in the house.
He's finally able to eat solid foods again. He also has a couple more procedures to do with his lower region yet.

The leg/ankle surgery cast will be removed checked & replaced with a hard cast after inspection. He will have 10 more weeks with that on.

I'll give more updates tomorrow.

Thanks again for all your support,
Jason

Just talked to Brian tonight. His spirits are very well for sure. He wishes he was out racing at Blackhawk Farms this past weekend.   ::)
It is possible that he might be going home at the end of the week as long as he can handle getting his checkups done without getting put under.

He wanted to say thanks to everyone who donated to help him & his family.
He is looking forward to getting home as he has been in the hospital for 15 days and has only been home for 3 days in the past month since we were gone racing.

He is having a hard time laying on his back at all. He was able to lay on his back the first week in the hospital but now as the pain killers are taken away he can only lay on his side. His sides are very sore from laying on them and he can't wait to be up and mobile again. It will be awhile before he can do that.

He walks for a short bit 3 times a day with his crutches and is currently learning how to go up & down steps on them. Going down is pretty challenging for him. He says he is going to be a strong trooper and wants to ride again if his body will let him. Its going to be a long road to recovery for him but knowing Brian he will stay tough through it all.
I might be going down to see him on Wednesday or Thursday to visit him. I'll take some updated photos and give more news when I get there.

Thanks for the updates Jason.  And thanks for all your work in getting support for Brian.  Thanks out to EVERYONE who swung by to donate to Brian's needs at BHF, and those who have done it online.  It's very refreshing to see the community come together for each other.

just want to say thanks for all the support and prayers for me to get better i really need it
i am home now and am getting better everyday but it will be a slow and long process, i am  sure that i wont be back to racing any more this year due to the time it will take to heal internal injuries, i am in alot of pain and discomfort in my butt area, i cant sit or lay on my back so my hips are very sore from laying on side to side
wanted to thank Jason for all the help and support, also Don Rankin for alot of help medically with products
wanted tothank Gron4 boys for the great looking poster they made for me which i love
want to thank the red flag fund ahead of time because im sure they will be helping
i all ready miss racing and being at the track,i have been watching all the ama racing on tv and wow do i miss not being there
i was in the hospital for just under 3 weeks with surgury every monday wednesday and friday so being home is great
if i feel better and am able to handle a 1 hour car ride then maybe i will come to blackhawk for a day if not then maybe a week later try to go to road america, all depends how it works for me in a car
thanks everyone its means alot

Glad to see you're up and around (sort of) Brian.  As much as hospitals do to help you, they sure do suck to stay at.  Being home will be a lot better.

I hope your pain goes away quickly man.

It will be a bummer not seeing that green machine racing at the front until you're back.
