Title: Just got Xrays....My track/racing is done :(
Post by: Speedballer347 on April 19, 2007, 04:29:14 PM
Got some bad news yesterday.

For the past couple years my right hand has been going numb by the end of a sprint-race or trackday session.  Harder I ride, the faster it goes numb.  It feels like my hand/fingers are detached from my brain, like my hand has MS, like I know what I want it to do, but it won't do it.
Feels exactly like when you sleep on it and it goes numb, but it does it when I am riding. Just lose control over what I want my hand to do.
I also have unbelievably sharp pain if I flex my wrist up-or-down with any force.

It has gotten so bad, that it is actually happening now when I try to write with pen/pencil....I can't hardly even write legibly.
Went and got X-rays yesterday, so I could get it squared up.  Said my wrist is bone-on-bone and swole up around the wrist, Dr said it was the wrist of an 80yr old man....said he had never seen anything like it on someone in their 30's.
I think my racing/track career is coming to an abrubt halt  :banghead:

I am soooo bumbed out!  :wah: :wah: :wah:
I was really hoping to race this year, but it sounds like my riding days are numbered.

If anyone has any medical type advice for me....any direction I might take....please let me know.... As of yesterday, I am desperate and depressed.

Aren't there injections you can get to mimic the fluids that are normally in place so the bones slide better?

I think i remember reading about randy johnson getting those type injections in his knee.

Go to a sports specialist.

Speedballer ...sorry to hear that I was looking foward to having you at our events this summer.
My best advice is to go see Dr.Prieb in Belleville Ill.
Thats the Dr. that put my hand back together when I crashed my H-D in 1994.
He is the best hand surgeon in the area.

Like Dave said, go to a sports ortho. There are all kinds of ways to fix problems like that now.  The wrong ortho will tell you to quit, the right one will figure out how to get you back out there.

+1 Hawk & Dave on the sport specs! Wouldnt be too sure its not fixable- gotta do some legwork but my bet is anything is repairable with anywhere from minimum to excellent results- seems you have a valid insurance repair,or you are disabled-on a permanent basis- it seems worth the effort ,not just to be able to ride well enough, but to work and enjoy life too - Chin up - as you look around your opinion is likely to change! - DAYM - with a signature "speedballer" I'm bettin on ya :thumb:! BEST `o` Luck!!!john in nj~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I'm going to school to be a psychologist but had enough medical experience of my own to tell you that it could be a number of things. But keep in mind that I'm in no way a doctor, just offering a few things to throw at your dr. they tend to look for the simplest explanation and leave it at that.
What ever the problem is, it's a nerve issue. When the muscles flex or pressure is in the right spot, the nerves are stressed or pinched and that causes the numbness. Bone on bone wont do that unless a nerve or nerves are getting pinched between the bones. Which could be the case. If that is so then they could be rerouted. They could move them to the side or grind a grove into the bone that the nerves could sit on.
If it's bone to bone then they could put in a chunk of plastic to separate the bones which would hold the nerves up and out of the way.
It could also be a very severe case of carpotunel syndrome. A case that bad would wake you up in the middle of the night.
Like the others, I would suggest someone that specializes in sports medicine and therapy, but a "GOOD" chiropractor may be able help. I have knee problems from a bad break when I was 6 years old. A doctor told me I needed surgery but I didn't want it. I looked around and heard of a chiropractor that treated more than just backs. He nearly yanked my leg out of socket and ruptured my testicles in the process, but it's been great for 4 years and still going strong. Just make sure you take your x-rays with you and make sure he's good.
But there's a few things. I hope like hell it all works out for you.

   a. get a 2nd opinion.

   b. sounds like simple carpal tunnel-start wearing a wrist brace off the track.

   c. change your riding style by putting more weight on the pegs.

  d. don't give up hope!    :thumb:

Highly rated and recommended just this week by several Dr's at Johns Hopkins when I made some inquiries about my own hand injury from CMP.  ie - "don't come here, go there"

Man, the bad news just never ends for you.....

Chris, I don't know if I have bad luck, or I just complain a lot more than most  ::)

I can still ride, but I am in a lot of pain while on the bike and my hand numbs out.  The more aggressive I ride the worse it hurts and the faster I get disconnected from my throttle/braking.
It has been getting progressively worse for several years (mid 2003), so if it continues to get worse than it is, I am done.  I can handle the pain, but the loss of hand control is getting impossible to work around.  Taking all of the fun out of it.

BUT......
Thanks for all the advice fellas! I feel a lot better about other options.  It was a Chiropractor(sp) that took the Xrays and told me nothing could be done.
I just made an appointment for tommorrow with my regular Dr, to get a referal to a specialist.
Apreciate the advice and support you guys give.
Erik

What EXACTLY is he saying is the problem?

I have cronic problems that flare up.  Some times, I have to slow down or even pull off because of them.  I thought that I needed a forearm faciotomy.  Consulted a specialist, and we went another route in a direction that I didn't expect.  Currently, things are better.  I've changed things several times over several years to make things work.

Keep in touch with me.

Racing career over?!!! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor??  No!, and it's not over now!  Okay, maybe John Blutarski, Bluto to his friends, does it a little better than me, but I still hope all goes well with your referral to the specialist.  And along the misery loves company line, I gotta go back for an MRI, orthopedic surgeon is concerned the hip might be dying from lack of blood flow following the wad at Daytona where the ol legs got sucked out of their sockets, so we'll both be headin for second opinions, waiting rooms, co-payments, endless radiation, and hopefully...some good news.  Art.

Damn!  Keep up hope man.  Seems like nowadays you have to force the doctor to treat you instead of him doing it on his own.

Keep going until you find someone who will help.

Update:

Went to my normal Dr, he said the Chiropracter's X-rays shows nothing except I had arthritus in my wrist and fingers, was immpossible to diagnose the numbing hand from the X-rays, said the Chiropracter was full-of-it.....just wanted to make money selling me visits and supplements.

Got an MRI, my wrist is bashed up from years ago, but other than arthritus pain ... is unrelated to numbness issues.
He thinks it is probably a forearm tendon(itis) causing the issue in the wrist/hand.  I am going in for some sort of a nerve-test in a couple of weeks too.
He said he is almost positive this will be fixable.
I feel better.

Thanks for all the support and advice!  8) :thumb:

Always look for a doctor that is in or at least into sports, too many people take the word of a doctor as ultimate when if fact he thinks you are simply insane to race and be looking for a way to make you stop, or worse, like in this case has a hidden agenda.

Saw my ortho again last week and he told me to bring back some pics  of my next time out. I found him from a friend who raced bicycles at the Olympic trial level, he always does what is best for me getting back to what I do, not what is cheapest or easiest.

Things have a way of working out.  I would find a few different Doctors and see what they have to say.  I had a bad accident 6/15/06 and first talks that they gave to my family was I might not be able to walk or even what my functions would be once I came out of a coma.  My left shoulder took the biggest beating on my body.  After I was back to functioning I only had about half of my movement in that shoulder.  I had a number of doctors that wouldn't even touch it to try and make it better.  After being referred over and over to different doctors I found one that could fix a lot of it.  It was a horrendous surgery and long time of rehab (which I am still doing!)  I am now getting close to about 85-90% of use from my shoulder with assistance.  My future of having a useable shoulder again is very good.  I plan on getting back into racing but it will be supermoto, no major concrete walls to find  :banghead:  I just don't think my body could take another lick like I did last time :thumb:

Matt, who is Dr Ting?

Ortho Dr. Arthur Ting has fixed up Nicky, Rossi, Hoppers and countless other racers plus Barry Bonds.
http://www.roadracingworld.com/news/article/?article=27713
He has a center in Fremont ,CA and a office in Palo Alto, CA
Or there is Dr Terry Trammell in Indy. He fixes up all the Indy Car driver.
Both are VERY well respected in the Ortho field.

Hope that help
