Title: Anybody see the movie, Borat?
Post by: tshort on November 20, 2006, 12:00:53 PM
What did ya think?  I still can't make up my mind.  We don't see many movies at the theatre anymore - tivo a lot of stuff these days, and that's enough.  But this one has been getting press in several places that normally don't cover things like movies, so we decided to see it.

On one hand, he is making people from Eastern Europe (I think that includes the "Stans", like Khazakstan) look kinda backasswards.  On the other hand, he is making Americans look kinda stupid.  On the other hand, he makes the viewer feel kinda stupid for not knowing how to react to the crap he's pulling on screen.  (Like at the rodeo - do I feel sorry for the redneck rodeo guy who doesn't like gays or Muslims, but is being taken advantage of by Borat?  Damn.).

Or was it just me?

I thought it was inappropriate, opportunistic, bigotted, misogynist and in extreme bad taste. that said, I laughed my ass off.

To me, it was just so over the top that no one in their right mind would have gone along with any of his stuff. My biggest beef with the film was that the villagers from the country they used for the Kazakh village received only $6 each. He could donate some of the profits to the villiage to help them.

My take on it: He made it for entertainment, and it was entertaining.

Re lmao, there was one point at which I did think we would need EMS support to revive us, we were laughing so hard - the wrestling scene that spilled into the hotel conference room?  I honestly can't remember the last time I laughed that hard.  It hurt.

I REALLY want to go see it.  Maybe I'll go this weekend.  I really dig this kind of comedy and can appreciate the talent to it.  I also crack up at the people duped who are now so pissed and filing all sorts of law suits (like the 2 college students who were talking about reinstituting slavery, etc).

Sacha reminds me a LOT of Andy Kaufman (who was also widely misunderstood)

I saw it and cried for the first 10 minutes straight at least.  I can't remember the last movie I saw that made me laugh so hard I cried  :lmao:

Sascha has been doing something on HBO called the Da Ali G show for sometime now. It took a while to get warmed up to it and realize what was going on. Definitely Andy Kaufman brilliance.

...and the lawsuit from the woman, oops, sorry the Southern Belle, who thought he was filming a doc. on Southern Hospitality!!?? We'll go this weekend and   :wah:   our eyes out too.

I saw it and about fell out of my chair 6.3 million times-funny as hell!  Yeah I feel bad he duped some people, but the guy was so unbelievable so I don't really feel sorry for them too much.

Did he do a movie a few years ago about a couple of middle easterners trying to be gangstas?  I think they drove a fast & furious style AMC Pacer.

Da Ali G show is one of my favs.  Interviewing the DEA guys about which was his preferred drug I laughed so hard I cried.

The other bit that was hilarious was when he impersonated a gay fashion designer and "interviewed" the other wannabe gay designers at a NY fashion show.  They were so into themselves that they had no idea they were being mocked.

That's the story with MOST ALL of the people he ends up reeling in...

The responses of the people he "interviews" on the Ali G Show are great.  The wine tasting episode was hilarious.  I haven't seen the movie, but I want to.

+1 what everyone else has said... I don't remember the last time I laughed so hard at a movie.  I enjoyed how stupid the people where that actually went along with it... and how they are now filing law suits against him.  What did they think?  Didn't they nottice the big camera in their face recording the whole thing?  Especially the frat boys.
