Title: ducatirider944 - Brad Neff HPT fall
Post by: Jeff on June 19, 2006, 10:15:38 AM
In Thursday practice, Brad Neff, 121 MW AM took a fall and ended up into the wall.  He broke pretty much every bone on the right side of his body and some on the left, including shoulder, arm, all ribs on rt, 2 on left, pelvis, tib/fib, and he has a head injury.  Both his lungs collapsed, etc.

Bottom line, he didn't come out very well...

I'm not sure where he's at right now, I believe that they took him to Topeka, but then  flew him to KC.

If you've got room in a prayer, please think of him...

I am not sure about insurance.  He is self-employed, so I have no idea what's going to happen with him...

Someone that knows Brad please contact Dean at TrackAddix.  Call toll free 866-92-Track.  We are organizing a Wegman Fund raiser during our upcoming TrackAddix GP race weekend at MAM to benefit Brad Neff and Jason Thorson.  I know Jason and have contacts for him, but I don't know Brad.  I would appreciate it if someone close to him would give me a call.

Hi everybody.  I thought that I would give you an update on Brad.  Where to begin...

Brad went off the track in Turn five (the second of the two rights) and hit the concrete wall on the outside of the turn.  The details of the crash probably aren't important here.  Brad is at KU Medical in Kansas City.  He sustained a broken tib/fib on his right leg, broke all the ribs on his right side, right scapula, left arm, two left ribs, and multiple fractures to his pelvis.  He sustained some slight head damage and two collapsed lungs.

On to the good news.  Brad is on a ventilator for his lungs and his breathing is getting better.  He has no paralysis and Neurology hopes that his head will be fine.  The doctors have already put a steel rod in his leg and it looks very straight.  He is scheduled to go into surgery tomorrow to have his pelvis screwed back together and a plate put in his arm.  It will be a long road, but I am hoping that he will make a full recovery.

Jeff, thanks for the post on the board and the Wegman challenge.  Thanks to everybody else for their help this weekend, thoughts, and prayers.  Dean, I will give you a call tomorrow.

Now, who do I call to arrange adjoining rooms for Brad and Jason?

Brad is still in the surgical ICU at KU Med. They attempted to take the ventilator out and it didn't go well, so they put it back in. They have determined that he has more serious head injuries than they had initially thought and may have had a few small strokes at some point, which explains the agitation when they try to decrease his sedation. For now, he is still in a drug-induced coma and they are doing a tracheostomy today or tomorrow to get the ventilator out of his mouth (to prevent damage to his vocal cords). They have extended the prognosis for rehab and don't expect him to be back to his "normal self" for at least 6 months to a year (if ever). He will probably be in Kansas City for another couple weeks before we can think about getting him moved back to Iowa, but he is still unresponsive and the doctor has told us that he should have as little stimulation as possible, so we can't touch him or talk to him, which is really hard.

I spent some time with Jason and Amber at the hospital, which was great. Thanks to the Lithium boys for getting me out of the hospital for a few hours!! Thanks to everyone for their prayers and well-wishes - it looks like Brad will need them for a few more months as he works his way through recovery.

Steph, I am Vic Hyman's fiance, Vic and Brad were very close friends in High School and lived together in college and if you need ANYTHING and I mean ANYTHING please let me know, my number is 319-558-9469.  I was also wondering if there was a way that you could please pass off some well wishes from Vic and Kathy Hyman to his parents as well as yourself.  Is there a way that I could also get contact info for his parents?  Thanks and good luck out in KU.

Thanks again for all your support and prayers - they are helping!  I am in Iowa right now, planning to go back to Kansas City on Saturday for the long weekend. I talked to Brad's mom today and it sounds like he is doing much better now that he's had the tracheostomy and has the tubes out of his mouth. She said he was awake all day today with no ventilator and did really well. He is responding to some questions by nodding his head, but not following directions 100% of the time. He also got one of his chest tubes out today. He is having some problems with the nutrition they're giving him and the feeding tube, so hopefully they'll work those out soon so he can get the nourishment he needs to heal.

It sounds like his body is healing up well, so now we just have to wait to see how the head injuries have affected him. We got some information on brain injury that said the person may wake up and use a lot of obscene language - I can tell you right now, there will definitely be some obscene language when he starts talking......and that's before he even starts rehab.....but that won't have anything to do with a head injury   :banghead:

Thanks Gordie.  We have printed off the paperwork on your website.  We are still trying to get a grip on his insurance coverage, etc. and plan to contact you when the time comes.  I do have one question though.  On one of the posts, you commented to check on secondary insurance from the track or racing organization (I can't remember which).  Can you elaborate on that so that we know who to talk to, etc.  Thanks again.

Contact CCS home office. They will have their insurance info. It's not a lot but it will help.

For the track, contact HPT offices and they can tell you if they have anything available.

Dear folks,
It has been with heavy decision on my part as of my last accident to not be involved in racing anymore. I'm not sure where this will put me in the racing community or where it will leave doors open or closed for me, but after multiple injuries, 2 years, I lay here in a bed near HPT deciding what to do with my life. I am glad for everyone's support I have received in the past 4 weeks. I would like to be supportive back. Everyone needs to make their own decision about riding; and, this is mine.

Brad,
You don't know me and I don't know you, but I have been praying for you.  My brother was a ducati 944 rider.  I have been drawn to you and your story because of this connection.  I see that you have made a very hard decision about this sport.  One thing I want to tell you is that no one in this racing family will judge you for that, at least, no one that is really a PART of this racing family.  The real racers stood behind me and my family when we lost my brother to this sport.  They held us, cried with us, got angry with us and waited for me to love this sport again.  I admit, it took me some time.  So, what i am trying to say to you is that no matter what you decide you want to do with your life, this racing family will be right there, supporting you and rooting for you to cross that finish line, no matter where the checkered flag is flying.
God Blessed you when you survived that crash, you may not feel it right now, with the pain you are in, but there is a reason you are here and he will show you what it is.  Hang in there, I am pulling for you and by the posts by Stephanie, she sure is pulling for you as well as everyone on this post.
Many good wishes and prayers to you and your family,
Laura

Brad,  I am glad that you are pulling through this as you have had all of this worried (even my Mom!).  Racing really isn't meant to be for everyone but this is just one of those hard truths in life.  You have lived to tell about it and that is really all that matters in the end!  Even though you may not want to pilot a racebike any longer, please do not think that makes you banned from still coming out.  I have been taking most of this season off trying to get bills all caught up and stuff back in order but I will be back next year!  At most CCS Blackhawk events I have grown to be known as "The Fire Guy" as I always have an impressive bon fire out by Turn 6.  Please feel free to stop in whenever you can and I am sure that I can dig up something cold to drink for you!  I am just glad that you are going to make it!  Great news indeed :)

Thank you all so much for your support and your interest in keeping up-to-date with my recovery. I am back in Cedar Rapids and am able to use my laptop, so I wanted to make a post to let you know I am doing well. The doctors have told me I won't be able to start walking for another 3-4 weeks, but the good news is that I am able to use both my arms, I am rid of all tubes (almost) and I don't have to wear any braces anymore. I can get in and out of a wheelchair on my own and (the best news)  - they're letting me go home sometime next week!!! Poor Steffy will be taking care of my sorry ass until I can start walking. I'll have to put up with her sh!t, but at least she's a hottie.  I am planning to try to get to Wegman weekend on Saturday night for the auction. Hopefully, I'll be walking on my own by then - it still won't be hard to pick me out, though. I'll be the gimpy one with the Guiness in my hand. I also still plan on going to quite a few race weekends so Hitchthingy has a place to stay - he needs a pit bitch anyway  :ass:

How's about 2 laps around the hot pit wall, we can throw in some chicanes if you like on the "back straight".

Oh, and we'd have to come up with some rules...no performance enhancing add-ons, like, say... a ZX-11 motor?  :err:

It always takes a woman to figure out a guy's sneeky ideas.  I was thinking the engine from my gsx-r 750, it is still in running order.  Just for some side info that fits this thread.  I am rid of all my tubes, back to eating a normal diet, and they are sending me home on Thursday afternoon.  I can't wait to be in my own house with my own bed, bathroom, wet bar , and home theater :pop:.

Glad to read that you will soon be back at your own place.

I suggest getting a Netflix membership if you don't already have one! :)
