ok, i was changing a head gasket on an old 1982 Kaw 550. since i had to take the cams off, I marked them so I could put them back in the exact same position they were in before taking them off. Well, here is the problem...when I put everythign back together, i neglected to put the chain tenssioner back on...and i bumped the starter. the chain slipped a bit on the crank and now the whole thing is out of whack!
any ideas on how I can figure out where to position the crank in relation to the cams?
Well, there is probably a mark on the crank that you're supposed to line up with a timing mark on the ignition. Then the cams get placed a certain way...usually based on some marks on the cam.
I'd say you're probably going to have to remove the cams and start from the beginning. I don't know if the valves would hit the pistons when every thing got out of time.
