Title: POSSIBLE FORUM DOWNTIME THIS WEEKEND
Post by: Jeff on April 07, 2006, 05:42:17 AM
I'll be poking around this weekend and may need to take the forum offline for short periods.  If it is down, don't be alarmed, it'll be back in a few...

Upgrades, my man?

If all goes well, it will be moved and upgraded this weekend.  However, we likely will not be on the new server for USE until sometime next week...  (again, if all goes well)

The big issue is how long it will take to have the registrar & DNS's changed/updated.

What I don't want to do is have extended downtime (days) and I don't want to lose any content.  So what I will likely do is pack up everything, move it to the new server, upgrade it and then do the DNS changes/work.

I still have some questions on the process that I'm working out.

It would be MUCH easier if this forum was on a release of code that was database driven, but this shit is ancient and is all text based.  You ever see 115,000 individual text files?  96mb of TEXT.  It ain't pretty...

Additionally, there will be a URL change, but I will provide redirects.

Maybe we can start a thread over at the WERA BBS complaining about not being able to get into the "CCS BBS" and speculating about what's going on?  ::)  ;)

why not write a script that breaks each of the text files down to atomic units that could be CSV or DB aware?

Quotewhy not write a script that breaks each of the text files down to atomic units that could be CSV or DB aware?

because there is no plan or purpose in keeping the forum running in its current software (which is ancient, feature lacking and VERY insecure)

It's a simple conversion actually.  I've just never seen code this old.  When I got into YaBB forums, they were already using MySQL instead of simple perl scripts.

The conversion package is already written, tested and functions completely.  There's no sense in reinventing that wheel.

well, if the convert package already exists and works, why the complaining about how much easier it would be if it were DB driven?

Jeff,

I have no idea how big your operation is but if the DNS issue is what you are worried about for downtime... I switched my DNS servers to ZoneEdit years ago (completely independent of registrar) and have been quite happy. No DNS downtime in 3 or 4 years, upto 5 domains at no charge (again don't know how big your operation is) and practically instant DNS updates (usually 1 minute tops).

Just a thought, may not apply.

Gotta ask - How profitable is a chat room?

I'm all about bikes and have wasted more money then I'll make but why a chat room? Exposure? Not CCS but your own name and biz. Like advertising? What's are the rough costs of setting one up?

I know people have a passion for different things but why spend time and money on a server? It's either got to cost very little or sponsors paying to get on make it profitable.  ;) Could you make a living having one? Thanks.

Probably cause trying to figure out where each one of a possible 115000 files goes to is a lot more of a pita than a database that might have some relationships... and meaningful table names...

Adam, it's easier to work with if it's all in a database, but regardless, I did find a decent path forward.  Tested it yesterday and today and it works.

Hawk - The issue is getting the DNS changed from the existing server to our new server.  It's a registrar change and a dns update.  However, there will not be any significant downtime as there will be a domain change with this as well but don't worry, info will come out and there will be redirects, etc.

Mike - It depends on what you're chatting.  Chat on anything porn related and you can make money.  other than that, it's hit & miss.  It takes a lot of time and effort.

Can you make money?  Yes.
Can you make a living from it?  Probably.
Do I make a living from it?  Nope

UPGRADE STATUS

There will be no downtime this weekend.  Once I get the domain change completed for where the forum will be, I will take this forum offline for about 6 hours while I backup, transfer, convert and upgrade it to the new code.  At that time we will be live at the new site.  I will then place a redirect from www.racemotorcycles.com to the new site.

I'm hoping to do this sometime this week.

You will all be notified...

Thanks for info Jeff.

Off to start my own porn chat room!  ;D

Hey Jeff, can we have some new 'post levels' with the new forum?  Maybe more levels, or fun names?  For instance, the first level could be 'backmarker' or 'Squid'.  If Super Dave is an administrator, we could call that level 'Grand Poobah'.

I just don't have enough entertainment in my life...
