Title: Race Coolant /legal?
Post by: cane on February 02, 2006, 10:39:10 AM
Is Liquid Performance Race Coolant, and Engine Ice CCS legal?

In CCS, the only coolant that is ILLEGAL is Ethylene Glycol based coolant.

Others (propylene glycol, water, etc) are fine.

We use Silkolene Pro-cool or Engine ice.

Sometime last year I heard that if you use tap water mixed with Pepsi @ a 50/50 ratio you can get better cooling properties..... Just filled the new bike up with the brew on Tuesday ;)

You really have to wonder about Scotty.  ;D  No wonder Pat doesn't allow him to touch the bikes!

semi offtopic ... does ccs require that the coolant drain be safety wired ?
Title: Re: Race Coolant /legal?

It is somewhat ambiguous, but the concensus is that they are to be safety wired.

5.2.16 All engine, transmission, and final drive unit drain plugs and filler caps must be
visibly safety wired. Oil filter bolts must be secured with safety wire and spin-on oil
filters must be secured with a metal clamp and safety wire or other acceptable means.
Fuel and radiator caps are exempt.

yeah, its very ambiguous... and I'm sure it is a valid concern, I was just hoping to get away with one race with out it. I guess I'll have to fire up the drill press when I get home.

I made it through a year without having it wired.  Then I got dinged at tech one day so I had to drill & wire it in the pits.  I keep it wired now a days...

CCS hasn't required it for years.  Was a requirement.

Fuel and radiator caps are exempt.

I'm not sure how that isn't clear.

????

The question was about the coolant drain plug.

If the bike is upside down, the rad cap could be a drain!  :P ::)

Drain.  I do that.

Yeah, I've used RV anti freeze.  Seems to have worked fine.  Didn't freeze over winter.  Worked fine in racing.

Dave,

I just did three dealer  seminars with the Liquid Performance Operations Manager and learned a lot about the product.  It will literally fun 15-20 degrees cooler than Engine Ice.  A lot of road and off road racers were present and vouched for that as well.  They go around with the heat gun and check bikes as they come off the track and they average about 20 degrees cooler than E.I.

I don't run Engine Ice.

Too cool, and the bike won't run right.

And the temperature of the radiator and coolant may not necessarily be representative of the removal of heat from the source.

My opinion.

I didn't know that, I guess I learn something new everyday.

The heat gun they use measures the temp of the engine itself, but that can very as well.
