What PSI should I use for painting?
What ever paint you are spraying will recommend a psi (for hvlp and std) on the data sheet.
General, around 40psi w/ a non hvlp gun works for me.

Also depends on how thin you got the paint, what needle you have in the gun, make of gun..
Ya gotta play around with settings on a piece of cardboard to get teh right pattern.
I blew a can out once because I plugged it in at 90 psi. The can said do not go over 60 psi :-/
Luckily it was a cheap one and not my Devil-bliss. ;)
likewise, I was surpised that my HVLP runs between 7-9 psi. Now, one would figure any little compressor could keep up with that little of PSI... noooooo at 9 psi, that gun moves 12+CFM...
Simple way of understanding this, blow air through your lips tightly closed (small opening). Then open your mouth wide open... You run out of air real quick!
