Title: New brake pad brake in?
Post by: GeeMan614 on March 16, 2005, 06:40:21 PM
New brake pads come with a brake in period. How long on a race track for new pads to "wear" in?

Depends on the brake pad some are pretty much install and go, others require a cleaning of the disc to remove chemicals left behind by other brands of brake pads, others needs to be heat cycled first.

Check the instructions that come with the pads they should tell you what to do as they want you to have maximum braking with their pads and never to switch.

Most pads seem to have close to the same level of braking I see today while the major differneces are.
1. life of the brake pad
2. feel
3. inital bite
4. break in procedure

WOW I never thought of that. I usually will just go up and down the paddock slamming the brakes on doing stoppies until they are bedded in.

LOL, well, yeah...

They all work to the point of overcoming the traction of the tire on one's particular chassis.

But how hard you have to pull on the lever, etc., is the variable.

Break in can be an issue.  Some pads don't need brake in.  So, if one needs to put in new pads, there is no additional process.  That can be a life saver...or a safety concern.

I was once told...........

Do 10 runs of 60 mph down to about 5-10 mph (say with 80-90% of total braking power) and let the brake pads cool off.  That's it!

Thanks guys, I did a track day at VIR, and just rode the first couple of laps a little careful, pads seem fine after that.
