Just so everyone knows, I was almost killed this weekend.
We hiked back to what is called the ice caves. You can see them here... http://www.machalkstudios.com/ebenicecaves.html
This is a family thing and we do it every year. Getting there was normal and fine, but Stumpy decided we were going to climb up this steep side which is a cliff to get out. I followed Greg up and somehow lost my footing and ended up dangling from a tree root hanging on only with my left hand. Stumpy starts laughing histaricaly--his nervous reaction.
I tell him to get ahold of himself and help me. So he tells me I can't let go or I'll drop about 25 feet down, if I didn't smack a tree first. For some reason, all I thought about was in movies how people dangle for a long time and I wondered how long I'd hang. I really didn't want to climb up that way anymore.
I got my right glove off and got a grip in the snow with it until I managed to get my right hand on the tree root and pull myself up. Then Stumpy grabbed me so I wasn't killed. Stumpy thought it was great training for panic situations. Sometimes I get annoyed with his constant training.
The kicker was when I turned around and looked down from the top, a guy wearing a TV6 coat (our local channel) was videotaping me! Just ready for me to be killed, I guess!!! Apparently Stumpy's mom saw him laying behind the tree for leverage with his legs in the air trying to grab me and thought he was being goofy and took his picture, too.
Stumpy commended me on my ability to listen to instruction while panicked. I'm extremely afraid of heights--I don't like ladders. This just reconfirms my fear. I'll go back next year, though. Next weekend...Neegee Hill Extreme Sledding!
Ok, I feel better now.
Heather ;D
I somehow see in the recent future stumpy tied to a bed. The cold sharp edge of a knife being pressed upon him and the words "laugh boy! laugh!!!" being said.
This just confirms that Stumpy is a sick, sick puppy.
Stumpy should know that sick puppies are not allowed to have any cookies. ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D

Or maybe it will explain the strange laughter coming from Heather the next time that Stumpy crashes on a corner in front of her...
My best friend and I were climbing a few years ago when a rock broke off in his hand and he fell about 20 feet. I just head "sh!!!!!!!!!!!!!t" then saw him go from above me to below me. Luckily he landed on a grassy bank but basically landed on his hands and knees. Didn't break anything; just bloodied his nose. I have to admit I was just laughing. It was such a bizarre, surreal sight...

Oh......
THAT made my day.
Thanks!
Dawn ;D
He just couldn't get over the fact that I didn't find dangling there fun at all. Then afterward on the way back, he stated the obvious. I'm not an adrenaline junkie.
Actually, it wouldn't be a knife. A mouse. Or his most feared enemy--as he likes to describe it (and he's very serious)...the most dangerous animal ounce for ounce...a shrew.

Problem is he saved my life so I can't quite pay him back without saving him from the shrew at the same time. ;D
That's a riot! Glad you're OK, Heather!
Oh...
Good story...
Just to remind you that life is potentially more dangerous than racing...

I guess you concured your fear ?
Or was it the view of Stumpy's Stump? TO get you climbing a cliff ?
:)
Glad your OK

No, I'm still scared! I'm alright going from low to high, but high to low just isn't good. I've read that being afraid of heights means you don't trust yourself. Well, I should listen to myself and keep on not trusting so I don't get in these stupid situations!
You are right, SuperDave. Usually when people make remarks about racing being dangerous I say, "He could get hit by a dump truck tomorrow." You never know. My death on a cliff sure would put a damper on his race season! ;)

That depends.... How well are you insured? ;D

Careful Heather! I think there may be a conspiracy (sp?) with K-3 and Stumpy! Don't forget the photo!!! Give your lawyer a copy of the pic just in case!! ;D
My peacock feathers are fluffed and I expect hot homemade cookies when I get home! Say my name, say my name ;D So what if I was laughing, it was totally out of nervousness. I was once in a out of control car heading for the ditch laughing my head off. Weird, I catch myself racing in the rain with a huge grin on my face giggling as I save the highsides, I do admit I'm a sick puppy.

Oooooh...looks like a freakin' picture of a shrew had the desired affect!!! Heh.
Whatever the heck your peathingy feathers are, try not to get them on the floor or no cookies for you!
Hear that, sweetie? It was my whip cracking.
:-*
Heather, i'm afraid of heights as well, I don't even like going up the bleachers in turn 5 at Road America.
It's not that you don't trust yourself, though.
In my case, I passed out and feel down a small set of bleachers when I was 10. I wasn't hurt, and had actually forgot about the incident until about 5 years ago. Now i know why I'm afraid of height, but that doesn't change the fact.
Hey Stumpy, I'm a sick puppy, too. I once was showing my sister how fast I could take a sweeping off ramp in my Rx7. However I didn't compensate for the additional weight of her as a passenger. We went looping around at about 60 MPH and jumped up over the median and wound up stopped on the On ramp. I just sat there laughing hysterically. Good thing neither of us was hurt. My sister sat there and looked at me like I was nuts. Cool thing was we just got back on the freeway and headed on our way. ;D
I think we've all laughed at some point during or after a bad situation. It's just the way our type of people deal with stress. Fight or flight? Well, through much training and abuse, we've learned not to freeze, so what else can we do with all that excess input? Maybe we teach ourselves to view such a situation as ironic rather than terrifying.
Naturally, there's a spot in my novel that deals with this subject....

hmmmm, cartwheeling down BFR front stretch at about 130 mph.
I'm finding a shrew and bringing it to BHFs in May!! lol..that's funny. Glad your ok Heather.
