All I have to say is Daewoo...
Maybe, but it may put the "Big 3" into trouble with the entry level vehicles like the Neon, Focus, and Sunfire. If I was buying a entry level 4 cyl. for daily driving, I'd seriously consider a $10k car with a 10/100K warranty, even if it was a dirt cheap Kia Rio type import. If you think about it, for $100.00 a month, you really can't beat it. Plus, they're guarantee'n they're quality with the 10/100, something that the Big 3 have YET to do.... :-/
....from the man who gave us Subaru's first attempt at the US market (which failed), the Bricklin sports car with no ashtray ("You shouldn't smoke while driving.") and the Yugo. ;D
I can't help but wonder if the market these cars are aimed at might stir a backlash because of China's human rights record. (Not that I give a rat's ass, but you read these things in the paper)
Is Daewoo still around? I know Hyundi pulled Kia's butt out of hot water and put them on the 10/10,000 program, as well as squelching labor problems and putting the suppliers on notice about quality.
I'm sure the Big 3 are shaking in their boots. :P
Ah, warranties...
Those are for manufacturer's defects, not wear.
Good luck to those people that buy on warranty merits. When it's worn out, or the company folds like Daewoo, it's not covered.
If there was a huge market for four cylinder $hit boxes, they would be outselling pic ups and SUV's...but they don't.
So........
Daewoo is gone. The dealership I'm working at used to sell them. You can't really get parts, there is no warranty on those parts, and there is no warranty regardless.
The one's that are around for oil changes are just falling apart. Belts, cam sensors, etc.

I couldn't have put it any better Dave. I could add a few other issues , but I wont. Bottom line is you get what you pay for! Mark!
Yeah...
Here's my issue.
At what point did some people of the soccer mom era lose sight that differences in price might have meaning?
If you pay less than 10k for a new car...great...
But what does that buy you? For current Daewoo owners, no dealers, no warranty, no parts, no resale.
Really cheap cars are for socialist economies like Europe and Asia where the nanny state taxes everyone to death.
And that's why those little foreign cars were so good during the early gas crunch years; they already had to make tiny engines and all for their economies.
Car of the Year in China was the Ford Mondeo. So, what's up with that?

For those who dont know what the Ford Mondeo is, its the non-North American version of the Ford Contour. ;D
I'd like to have that Austrialian inline six turbo sedan here that Ford makes over there (name escapes me at the moment)... That thing is freaking awesome...
Aren't Daewoo cars sold as Chevys for 2005?

Ford Falcon XR6T is the one you are thinking of. I owned a XF Falcon in 88. Vicious little 6 cyl. ;D

Kind of a bizzare blend...
Chevy sells Chevy branded Suzuki's...Some of them used to be Geo's, then became Chevy's.
Some Suzuki's use Daewoo parts, etc.
Daewoo US is gone. I think Chevy bought Daewoo Korea?

Also chevy rebadged a toyota Corolla a few years ago with the bowtie emblem.

Geo Prism, Chevy Prism.
Ford had the Festiva and the Aspire. Kia's? One was, the other might have been something else.

That's what I heard.

Yes they are. That was part of GM's package when they bought those 4 or 5 DaeWoo plants in Korea; all the stock. Take a close look at a lot of the Chevy and GM stuff today, and look at a DaeWoo catalog from 97-02, it's rebadged DaeWoo crap. I think the Malibu wagon is one of many.

And theres even a high end platform sharing pair. Volkswagon Toureg and Porsche Cayenne. ;D
Almost forgot. Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Matrix share platforms. ;D

Nope, the new Malibu and Malibu Maxx are based on the Saab 9-3 and Opel Vectra platform.
Ford Five-Hundred, the Ford Freestyle, and the Volvo something or another.
Lincoln LS, Ford Thunderbird, the Ford Mustang, and one of the Jaguars.
Ford Escape and the Mazda something or another.
Ford Exploder and a Mazda.
Dodge Sprinter was a Freightliner made by MB. Still underpowered, really.
Then there's the Pontiac AsZPack...uh, Aztek....
Who designed that? I hope they were sent to Antarctica or something. I didn't see any crossovers there...LOL!

The Jag you were looking at is the S-type
The Mazda version of the Escape is the Tribute
The Mazda version of the Exploder is the Navajo (which hasnt been made in a while)
I seen a MB Sprinter a few years ago when I worked at Geneva Vans. The Fed Ex guy had it. This was before Dodge got one.
Asstek, well who ever designed it I hope is on the unemployment line now. ;D
The Mercedes Sprinter was marketed under a co-op agreement with Mercedes and Freightliner. MBUSA thought that Freightliner would be a good way to market the commercial vehicle. Boy, did they think wrong. Not enough distribution. So, then it became a Dodge.
Now, I'd like to have a MB Unimog 8) That thing is pretty cool :D
and I agree, whomever designed the Aztek should be shot.
The Chevrolet Caprice of a couple years ago fits into that same WTF design category. It was butt ugly. :P
They reverted it to serving as taxi cabs and police cruisers.

Yeah, but at least a commercial user can take the Sprinter and probably get emergency service on the road. Dodge dealer...well, they are retail, so the service aspect is different.
Unimog...LOL! Yeah, there's this guy in Omaha that apparently looks like my twin and he's a Unimog freak. I guess the US Government bought tons of them for Indian Reservations. They really weren't used efficently, went into disrepair...and this guy bought them for, basically, peanuts. I think they are like $114k and he was buying them for $5k to $14k depending upon the attachments...loaders, backhoes...LOL!
AUTO INDUSTRY REPORT: Honda recalls Accords
February 2, 2005
Honda Motor Co. recalled 486,659 Accord sedans and other cars to fix an ignition flaw that can allow the vehicles to roll after they are parked and the key is removed.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tuesday that the recall covers some 1999-2002 Accords, as well as 1999-2000 Accord coupes, all 1997 through 2001 Prelude coupes and some 1999-2000 Acura TLs.
No accidents or injuries were reported in connection with the recall.
About 15 months ago, Honda recalled more than 650,000 cars, minivans and SUVs to fix the same problem. NHTSA received complaints in October that additional vehicles could have the problem and asked the automaker to investigate, according to the recall letter.
There were 169 complaints, 28 incidents and three injuries in the prior recall.
It happens. Every manufacture has bean counters. There are Monday's and Friday's at every plant.
More Fridays than anything ;D
