Title: **The** Xmas tree stand (-:
Post by: dwilson on December 21, 2004, 06:05:29 AM
Every Christmas Eve my family puts up a tree and has a little party while decorating the tree. The problem is always the same, tree wants to fall over so my brother and me have to tie it up with fishing string (-:
This year I wanted to make my Mom a tree stand for one of her presents. I like to make things that last so I made it from solid 1/4" hot rolled steel plate and 5" structural grade steel tubing. The smaller legs are 1/4" X 2" and are braced by 3/8" steel bar (mostly for use as carrying handles). Everything is arch welded all the way around. The tree is secured into the stand with eight 3/8" bolts with 2" handles welded onto them for easy use.
On the bottom I welded my Mom's initials along with 3 horizontal stripes, these were to re-heat the metal from the bottom and counter-act the warping from weling on the tube.
It weighs 28lbs and is 24" wide

This is my first version which failed when I found that some major pieces were cast iron (which doesn't weld to steel).  If anybody has a use for it, come get it out of my garage.
