Okay, guys with hyperactive hormones can tune out now ::)
I didn't quite know how to title this. I'm wondering whether any other racers who are planning to be at Gingerman 10/9-10 will have their daughters/neices who are around the age of 11 at the track.
I'd love to bring my daughter with me. But she's at that age where she's beginning to establish her own routine and personality. Unfortunately, motorcycles don't have anything to do with it :( sigh....
I don't have to take her to Gingerman. I just would like to have her there with me. But a whole w/e at the track without any of her friends, little to do except read and Game Boy, and no one else to hang with just wouldn't be fair to her.
Your input is invited. I'd especially like to hear from anyone in a similar situation.

H-man- this may be a tough sell, but try to make her a part of your crew. Explain to her that you really need her help and that you must rely on her to be there for you. Give her some responsibilties like having water and stand ready when you pull in to your pit, cleanup of the bike, making sandwiches, being a wlaking checklist for you etc. She is at a age where she could easily fulfill these roles and maybe even get her involved in helping out your buddies the same way for $10 bucks each. I see many kids helping parents or friends at our races, and i think it really helps teach the kids something, makes your relationship tighter and keeps them "off the streets"- not to mention may help seed the future of the sport! Renee Buxton is 12, I think, and the nicest, most well behaved young person I've ever met. Unfortunately, I don't think the Buxtons will be there that weekend.
Being childless myself, I usually have to consciously remind myself not to get annoyed around bratty kids, but I've always liked Renee. Paul and Dawn have done a good job raising her.

Doc Stein's boy is a pretty decent kid, too. (I can never remember his name. Alex, maybe?) The kid actually just walked over and was helping me put my bike back together at Wegman as I suffered through a 20 megaton, margarita ball hangover!
I grew up at the track myself. Rumor has it that I was concieved in September of 1962 at the Milwaukee Region SCCA Fall Sprints. There were always kids around, and I made a bunch of friends that I only saw on race weekends. One summer, I got chickin pocks, mumps, and measels back to back. I missed going to the track (or even going outside to play) that whole summer. I remember bawling my eyes out. Races were going on, but I wasn't there. (Not much has changed, eh?)
Just bring her to the track, H. My bet is she'll survive OK, find someone to hang with, and end up really liking it.

I suppose it's just that being a "part-time parent" I'm a bit sensitive to how our time together is spent. Not that everything is meant to be perfect, but I don't always have the next day to smooth over things that don't turn out right. :-/

I have been with MARRC for gosh, almost 4 years now?? has it been that long? hehe
Anyhoo I got married 2 years ago and my wife has three daughters. Their ages are 14, 11 and 9. I started bringing the oldest to the track with me 2 years ago and she loves it. She usually works the MARRC info booth and/or is out selling IMF drawing tickets at Summit.
Just this past season she has become, well, interested in a few "boys" at the track. I usually try and protect her from the older guys but it seems there's an upswelling (for lack of a better term) of 14-16 year old racers this year. Just my luck eh?
I think the race track is a great place for her to be. She's around people who are , for the most part, great role models for her(notice I said for the most part..hehe). She also likes talking to the handful of girl racers that come to Summit Point. It gives her something to look forward to each summer.
The track is a great place for girls. Just make sure they stay where you can see them..hehe
