Title: Blackhawk FYI for those who take I-90
Post by: OmniGLH on August 27, 2004, 07:48:17 AM
Just an FYI...

Rockton Rd. is CLOSED at the I-90 on-ramp.  You may want to plan an alternate route.

Dan and I figured this out last night when we went to drop off our trailer out there.  We were able to get OFF at Rockton... but we couldn't get back ON - the bridge was out.  So we wound up driving an extra ~20 miles out of our way in pitch blackness trying to make our way to a road we knew.  Good thing we found this out last night, and not Saturday morning.

Best bet is probably to get off at Riverside, and take that west to 251 - then take 251 north to Rockton Rd.

So can you get out there ok but not get back? Did I read that right?

You can get out there- just not from Rockton Rd.

Basically, you go through the tollbooth, cruise up the Rockton Rd. off-ramp... and are greeted with barricades and "ROAD CLOSED" signs.  You HAVE to turn RIGHT - you can't even squeeze around the barricades.  Plus, from what I could tell, it looked like the bridge was out (the bridge that crosses over 90.)  So even if you did go around the barricades, you wouldn't get very far.

We wound up driving all over the countryside trying to find our way back west.  Somehow we wound up at 251, and took that north to get back to Rockton Rd.  There were signs all over that said "Rockton Rd. I-90 ramps closed."

So I think the easiest way to get there is to get off at Riverside (last Rockford exit) and take that west to 251.  Then take 251 north to Rockton Rd.

Coming home, you'll have to do the same thing, as according to the signs I saw, you can't get back ON to I-90 from Rockton Rd. either.  Just don't get lost coming back down 251 on your way home like we did... you go through some pretty shady parts of Rockford.  I think it wound up taking is ~2 hrs to get home last night (it's usually a 45 minute drive!)

From points south, continue going N on 90...

Exit IL 75 (South Beloit).
Go West to IL 2 (the "T" in the road), then North (right) to Shirland Ave (the first left ).
West to Townline Rd, then South (left). Follow Fischer Rd (it turns West) to Praire Ave then South (left) to BHF

Cool thanks a lot for the info man, this will save some headache especially hauling the trailer trying to take detours is a real pain.
