Title: BUYER BEWARE>>>PAYPAL SCAM<<<
Post by: racer960 on August 22, 2004, 05:39:16 PM
Details:

on july 27 of this year a person contacted me about a 600RR headlight/ brake light i had listed on several sites including this one.  he/she used the name KEHO SEREY HUL and email address fob1530@hotmail.com  he/ she used the real KEHO's paypal account to purchase the headlight/ brake light for 275 bucks!!!  I lost both ways since my paypal account was deducted the funds in question and returned to the real KEHO.  I'm posting this because i know a lot of you own 600RR's and he/ she could strike again.  paypal said it's my fault for shipping to a un confirmed address but i was just trying to be a nice guy and help a fellow RR rider out.

I know you are highly sensitized to this right now and I should not respond to your post, but...

1. You shipped to an unconfirmed address, that is, you shipped to an address that was not associated with that account, and
2. Since you're out the funds, I assume you didn't purchase the seller's insurance that is available to protect you if you decide you really want to ship to an unconfirmed address, so...

Now it's Paypal's fault because they won't "work with you" by which I assume you mean they won't pay for your mistake?

Very sorry you got ripped off, but it wasn't by Paypal who ripped you and you're putting blame in the wrong place.  Any way you can track down the thief?

Paypal s u c k s period. to make a long story very short I shiped out tickets to a dude who later tried to scam me after the event took place. He said i dident ship the tickets to him. He signed for it and all but becasue he bought two tickets from me not one, he contacted paypal and tried to get half the money back casue he said he dident get the "second ticket" which was bull c r a p. becasue both tickets where shipped together in the same package. He said was trying to say he only got one ticket in the package. So i contacted paypal they said i should have shipped it to him using two packages. I then said well why did it take this dude two weeks after the event and three weeks after he recieved the tickets to make a paypal claim?? That shut them up really fast.. but they still held the money back from me for another two weeks to "investigate" needless to say f paypal in there scamming a s s . I try to stay away from paypal as much as possible.

Yes, they held your money back...  And there's a huge lawsuit against them right now for this very thing...

Bottom line, you have to assume SOME level of responsibility in doing business ANYWHERE.

Even if you're buying from someone you KNOW, and using cash!  Assume responsibility that the parts may break or be in a different condition, or come from a stolen source (unbeknownst to seller), etc!

Don't walk blindly and be naïve about the exchange of money.  And yes, nice guys do get screwed over.  Does this mean you should be a jerk?  No, it just means that regardless of the amount of precaution you take, you can still get scammed.  It happens.  However, many times, simple precautions can alleviate scams...

sorry about your loss

btu when using paypal ., always remove the funds right away., transfer it out., and add funds as you need them to send money .., this way they can not hold your money or give it back., if there is no money in the account they can not refund the other person....

2 pennies

Wrong...  They can/will deduct it from your account/credit cards on file.

not from what i read., and got from them... btu if so i guess i will be making a new account to list with them ., to keep that empty ., and the CC can be desputed ... alot easier than dealing with Paypal..

where did you see/hear this ??  making an unauthorised withdrawal from an account is unlawfull... i thought i read there contract well ., but i could have missed something.!?!?!

I believe that Jeff is right.  They can pull from your bank account or credit card.  (I believe this was an ammendment that came out about a year and a half ago)  You know, where they send you a letter with new rules and you basically agree to those rules if you continue to use the account.

Go back through and read all the agreements you digitally approve when you sign up.

If they removed it, that's new.  And I would be GREATLY surprised if they did since it would open them up for HUGE losses.

Having an empty bank account would work, but will cause different headaches when your bank starts charging you NSF fees for the withdrawl attempts by PayPal which you authorized when you signed up...

thanks for all the feedback.  i was a bit sensitive when i posted this thread.  it wasn't intended to bash paypal.  i just wanted to get the word out about a potential thief using an alias to buy 600rr parts

i take full responsibility.  i shipped to an unconfirmed address.  like i said, i was looking to help someone out.  lessoned learned.

no away around the deduction of funds.  like jeff said you will pay the money back.  they'll put your account in negative balance then draw from bank or card to restore the money loss.

i've done over 100 transactions through paypal, including unconfirmed addresses.  i've learned my lesson and will be smarter next time.  see ya

oh yeah, jeff, i'm sending the money through paypal for the brakes...lol

And I'll ship to whatever address you want  :P

lol...

A lot of the time there are indications that someone is either scamming or stupid.  It's discerning the two that is the issue.

Case in point, recently I had a guy who wanted a bunch of parts.  I quoted him $565 for everything.  He replied that he only wanted $265 worth of the parts, but paid me $565.  Hmmm...  I didn't know if he was trying to scam me or what (I refund him and then he refuses charge thus burning me twice, etc).  I emailed him a couple of times and the communication just wasn't working.

A quick phone call revealed that he's NEVER used a computer before (talking to him, I genuinely believed this), and we sorted things out.

I also had one guy who wanted $2500 worth of stuff from me shipped to Canada from a NEW PayPal account with an unconfirmed address.  His email was from hotmail.  He was VERY reluctant about any information, etc.  So I told him that he'd either have to pay me via check/money order (which would have to clear first) or I'd hold his paypal money 60 days before shipping because the deal seemed shakey.  He didn't return my email...   8)

I often ship to unconfirmed addresses, but as a general rule, I want to see the person be a Verified paypal member with many transactions, and having a good ebay reputation helps.

A majority of the people out there are honest.  The thieves are the exception to the norm.
