Title: Censorship gone awry-I am offended
Post by: G 97 on July 20, 2004, 08:06:25 PM
How is it that two of the biggest WERA board rejects can continue their blabbering idiocy on this board while other far less "offensive" post are constantly edited and or deleted.   ::)

Ironic that the WERA board seldom if ever will delete or post edit any threads or post, while the CCS board is constantly censured.  Yet two doofesses that managed to get banned from the WERA board for being supreme tools are allowed to continue their complete and utter BS here.   Talk about offensive.  :-/

I am against censorship or editing/deleting posts, on either board.
Let sunny and corner fight it out....don't open the thread...it's that easy.
I find it amusing personally.

anyway...just my opin'

It seems to me that posts here don't get censored until thy get downright hurtful or damaging to the sport.  Free speech is allowed until people refuse to show enough good jugdement to put a sock in it.  First ammendment laws don't necessarily apply here.  CCS owns this forum, making it private.

A good example of this policy in action was the cornerworker VS trackday org. thread.  All parties involved got bent and turned the situation into a shoving match.  Who was right or wrong?  WHO CARES!  The way things were headed, the debate could have created a serious rift between corner workers, racers, and the orgs that put on the show.  Damaging?  Uh, yeah!  So the topic got locked.  I would call that good parenting.  A bit more of that might make this world a better place!

Ninneys can yammer all they want, but if it becomes mean spirited, offensive, or damaging to the sport, it doesn't belong here.  That is my OPINION.  Flame if you must, but I won't choose to argue the point further.  Besides, My OPINION doesn't dictate the rules of this board one bit.  I just support the way things are handled.

And of course anyone who doesn't like it here has the full freedom to leave...

So who determines what is offensive.  Who determines when enough is enough?  Who determines when a post is "deleted" VS. "modified" VS. "locked".  What guidelines come into effect?   Maybe if we had some written guidelines and examples of what it deemed OFFENSIVE these sort of situations could be avoided.  Several got offended from the CW thread; I found it as a good opportunity to share people's perspectives in order to improve the quality of the product.  In the end I think open discussion always improves things.   I did not see any mean spirited or derogatory comments in the entire thread.  So by not discussing sensitive subjects, problems solve themselfs?

At this point, Dawn is in the driver's seat.

On the whole, I would have to agree...  Censorship starts within.  Don't like it?  Turn it off, look elsewhere, ignore it...

I agree. Look at me, I personally censor everything K3 says.

I also think that Dawn does a good job of controling the board. If we had rules all written out, someone would read them 3 times and find a way to get around them, and then complain that they weren't cheating since they didn't break the rules. That would turn into another cheater thread and we all know we don't need any more of those  ;)

Sorry, I am one of the guilty parties who caused that thread to be "terminated" although I did stop posting after Dawn told me to.   :-[  I knew I promised that I won't reply to Dan's thread and only post value added information, but when Dan starts BSing about his time, and how he's racing without being serious nor giving 100%, I just had to say something...........   ::) ;D  Anyway, won't happen again I promise.

Dawn did a great job and probably should have hit the "terminate" button sooner instead of tolerate it longer in my opinion.   ;)

My point exactly.  Thank You.   If this is the case then why do we need a third party who "interprets" what is considered offensive Vs. non-offensive.  Rather ironic.   Believe me; nothing I have read on this board even comes close to offending me.  Honestly, I think society has become so self centered, sensitive and PC that everything offends everyone these days.    Just curious thanks.

Point being that I'm one of two moderators of the NEAR List and owner/co-moderator of the NERL List. If I said LRRS owned either one of them, I'd get a flurry of private emails from those above me because my actions would be construed as official policy. Now by being "unofficial", I have a lot more leeway!  ;D
What's funny was that the NERL List was started by a bunch of people who got kicked off of the NEAR List. Both lists are now run by the same two people! I keep NERL going as a place to dump the off-topic things that cause hissy-fits over at NEAR (Paris Hilton links, dirty jokes, full blown flame wars, etc.)
Hell, Dan and Sunny are more than welcome to sign up and continue their purse fight over there! (We aim to entertain)

... Yes, this is the unoffical forum of CCS, but like having to wear a tie at certain restaurants, this forum has general feel to it and I was asked to keep it that way.

There's enough garbage out there, let's keep this board clean and fun.

I hate censorship as well, that said...

The problem with "if you don't like it, don't read it" is that if the nonsense gets real out of hand, no one will want to read anything. This is a pleasant, active board, read by more than just the folks who post here most often. Some of them only have access at work.

Dawn tries not to censor anything, but if she gets enough emails that something is offensive, then she will use her super forum powers to zap the offending word or thread. I know she's often let stuff slip that those clever members out there have written specifically to get around the auto-censor.(myself included) I find the occasional use of administrative perogative a better solution to just banning folks outright.

There is no FAQ for this board, and if everyone uses some common sense, there won;t be a need for one.

The news you watch uses censorship, the movies have ratings and the FCC has guidelines. I would think that the participants here would have enough maturity and respect for the others who participate to do a little self censorship. You can get a point accross many time without the use of racial slurs or sexual blatancy. Most times to better effect.

My $.02

Believe me Johnny. I know.:D:D I'm a mod on a very large (18,000+ members) motorcycle forum (www.cycleforums.com) and its amazing how people will act online. But are totally different in person. I guess some people live for the drama they create online. Every forum has some troublemakers and the mods here do a good job keeping it to a minimum. I've seen boards that basically are free for alls (yahoo club sportbikechat in particular) and how fast fights start and nothing gets done because the mod/admin ISNT THERE.
I used to own the Yahoo CLub YamahaFZR, ex-mod on sbn and in the process of starting a club with 3 friends for the WI/IL stateline riders (still needs to be worked out).

Seriously tho...

What makes this BBS stand out are the members.  Dawn does a good job keeping this place work- and kid-safe... and up until recently, comparatively "nonsense-free".  This is the "Unofficial CCS BBS", not the "Dan and Sunny Comedy Hour".

It's not a BBS. It's a straight email list, no bells and whistles with 47 members who all belong to NEAR. It's pretty dead, but I keep it on life support because it was a great backup when NEAR@Clarity went belly-up.
I also administer a yahoo club that is a decendant of Dean Adam's old Superbikes Planet. It lists about 500 members, but there are maybe 15-20 active members. I use it to keep in touch with my AFM contacts.
There is also the USCRA List and its smartass offshoot, Skulls. This is a unique situation where the rebel offshoot has much more traffic than the parent list.
So far, no stampede of troublemakers signing up at NERL.  :)

The thing with Jack is that you don't have to buy to look. The problem comes when you look, and then of course, you have to buy. ;D

I don't have a problem with announcements, just with having ads in the general section. Jack doesn't really advertise IMHO

BTW I'll be ordering a disc for Roger.  :D

Jack,

I guess they let you respond to questions answering who was taking photos at blah blah blah, but that's about it.  I could have sworn that I saw Photo Chick putting stuff in the General section of the WERA board to let people know that they would be taking photos - but I guess that's changed.

I did see that she now has a paid sponsor banner that comes up on the WERA site somnetimes.  Maybe that's why she is given more latitude in posting info.

Good luck!

Rick
