For those of you who have tried it, what's been your experience? My buddy used a 170 at MAM since they were out of 160s. He couldn't tell much of a difference. ???
I believe most if not all 170 are not made for 4.5" rear wheels (definitely not the Michelin 170). You may want to check with the tire supplier to be on the sure side. Squeezing a larger tire on a smaller wheel will alter the desired tire profile and hence the handling will suffer (slower transition from side to side and full lean side grip, etc.......). Some won't notice much of a difference due to several reasons............ Not having the bike/chassis/suspension set up correctly to begin with, nor riding fast enough (off pace) are among the most common ones.
Anyway, most SV racers stick with 120/70 front and 160/60 rear tires.
Actually Tom Mason was the one who said a few have used it. Was just wanting to get a little feedback from those riders who have. I'll most likely stick with the 160 unless they sell out again sometime. ;)
Kris:
Paul runs a 170 on a stock rim and loves it... but why he likes it, I don't know. You'll have to ask him.
I will PM our phone number in case you want to call him tonight. But don't let him talk your ear off, he has some packing to do. ;)

I can't imagine Paul talking my ear off. Well, I guess you just have to get him going, huh?

True, he is a man of few words (usually), but get him talking about motors, tires, handling, ect.....
He's a whole 'nother man.

i can tell you about the dunlops., i was running a 170 to start with then switched to the 160 ., WOW what a difference... the bike turns in so much nicer and holds lines to much nicer...
i loved the 170 , but when i switched i really could tell a difference .. and they stick just as well., i was concerned about having less contact patch, but not so... i actually dropped my lap times by more than 1 second....
just my 2 pennies.,,.
i always want bigger ., but quess it does not help..
Since most don't think I am creditable due to some reasons, I'll post this link for you to read and judge for yourself. ;)

I'll stick with the 160 unless they run out. Just curious if I had to go that way sometime... 8)
Yikes. . 170 is too wide IMO. :)
If anything, you may want to try a 150/155. The SV usually doesn't use all of the 160 the way it is.

Himmmmm....
Paul has some 170's that are worn ALL the way to the edge. It could have something to due with the fact that he is 230 lbs though.
