Title: Psycho in the pits at MAM
Post by: sdiver68 on July 05, 2004, 09:27:24 AM
So there we were, working on our bikes around 6:30 on Friday at MAM when a guy from the pit over comes and asks us to turn our generator off since they "like quiet time" after being on the track all day.  WTF  ::)...well we moved a truck in between the generator and their pit and it reduced the noise by about 1/2.  By large generator standards it was already pretty quiet, it's new with a fully in-tact and working muffler.

A few minutes later some old guy from their pits all of 5'5 120lbs wet comes yelling at us about how rude it was to keep our generator running.  Called us a few names and threatened to sabotage the generator.  We told him we would gladly shut ours down if he would get everyone else to shut their's down  ::) ;D, and pointed towards Larry
Pegram's pit.  He walks over there, sizes up the huge semi-trailer he has, then turns right back around and starts stuff up with us again when we laughed at him.

So after 45 minutes of him walking back and forth to cuss at us I walk over and make a point of noting the race number on the bike, his son.  Well now the mom is going crazy thinking they just made an on-track aggressor with their son, and goes and reports us to security.  Security comes over, asks us about it, we explain the situation, and the guy says "you have to be kidding me this is generator city at night", and walks over to them and warns them if they start any more trouble, out the gates they go.

The sad thing here is the racer son was actually pretty cool, but he needs to control his dad.  I'm not naming names on purpose, but several board posters know who I'm talking about.  The real sad thing is one of the best things about going to the track is how nice everyone is, but this incident pretty much killed that vibe for the night.

That suks man.  Christ, EVERYONE knows that MAM is a friggin generator town.  This can't be their first time at a race track.......dude needs to get a grip on the reality of racing!!

People are what makes race weekends worthwhile. Characters and laughing at ourselves for the stupid stuff we all do.
Occasionally there are going to be people that are uptight and hostile, or macho and threatining, but it is rare. This Dad was probably uptight about his boy on track and didn't know how to vent the energy so everthing got on his nerves. Sorry your night got to be a downer, but it's best to forgive the guy and forget about it. By the next time, he may have a better grasp how to deal with his tension and be the one laughing at himself about that night.

MAM is like insult to injury in this area, no power available thru-out the pits, and a very questionable PA system. So not only do you have to have the generators running if you require power, but then you can't hardly hear the calls during the day as it is (even without the generators).

I have always wondered why it is so difficult for the tracks to have adaquate PA systems and even a moderate supply of power distribution points (which they make money off of anyways). These 2 things are the relatively inexpensive investments by the tracks that can make or break an otherwise awesome race weekend. This is yet another example of this. ??? :-/

Too bad I missed it steve...but it's all good; next time!

It was a good time! We had a blast and made it through 16 races unscathed.  I think we really threw the dice there.

About the generator incident...alcohol was a factor, I'm sure of it.  His son is a nice guy.  I'm sorry it happened between you guys. SDiver, did we meet?  Or did you meet Stumpy?

Now that damn jet car, that will keep you up at night! How cool was that!!!!

Overall, it was a fun weekend despite the hard work!

LOL...  I'd have handed him a set of ear-plugs and said "here, these are on me...  now STFU.."

I'll sometimes sleep with my genset running through the night.  I had two complaint in 3 years.  The line of "I can't sleep because of your generator" is usually met with a "no, you can't sleep because it's 20 degrees out and you're in a TENT.  wanna come inside?"

Hey, at least it was entertaining to watch. Actually,
let's put it this way:

1 - 1 running Generator... $550.00
2 - A bottle of rum .... $14.95
3 - The look on Stumpy's face as we sat there watching the whole episode unfold..."priceless"

 ;)

I think MAM should also invest in a ferry to get us from the paddock to pit out.  Methinks they have a *slight* drainage problem...

Screw the ferry that was me on the sea doo pulling the bike out to pit out! ;)

Anyone else miss a race to the piss poor PA system?  Thank god I only lost one spot in the points...it'll take an act of god to get it back though.

We were pitted right next to the registration building and I swear they skipped some calls completely.  We could hear most of them clearly but somehow missed some for practice sessions.   :-/

Also, I thought the gravel road was supposed to be getting paved this year?   ???

I felt like I was in the middle of a soap opra the whole weekend... I felt like the mediator... Edgar had to pick up my jaw as I saw the whole thing. Then seen him going to Pegrams pit. To me a good ole' generator put me right to sleep. Then after a couple of my buddies got in a tangle on the track, I felt like the dad when both came up and told on each other ;D Good times. Good times. Super Dave, you need to quit that Formula stuff and hang out more. ;)

I personally like MAM. Great track layout. Good surface and grip. Yes, there are some paddock issues, but they are pretty minor compared to the superior track layout, safety and surface quality it provides over...say...HPT.

You're not being fair.  You can't blame the track for the long drive or the hot weather when you were there.  Yeah, I am sure that you have other reasons, but I'm sure that influenced you.  Plus, I remember when you said that you hated Gingerman.  Now, we both think it is a great track. :P

I went to MAM for the first time this weekend.  No electricity sucks.  Poor PA system was a pain.  Track owners that think it is as nice as Road A was kind of silly.    But, I thought the actual track was a blast.  I look forward to going back again.

Hey Stumpy, now that you bring up Super Dave into this... When I first read the thread title, I thought it was going to be about Super Dave and Lil' Thorny doing the "JIHAD - scream and dance" thing while waiting to go out on the track for the MWGP Race! Or maybe when Super Dave was mooning us while off the bike as the one board was coming out! That was some funny shiitz I tell you!!

 ;D ;D ;D ;D

What is this fascination that Dave has about his own arse?  He mooned Jensen as we were watching him from inside T5-6 yesterday.   ;D

Did they fix the surface, or did it cure to a usable condition?  When I was there, it was so soft that they had a steam-roller lay the corners back down between races.  And it ATE tires... like 1 set per 2-3 sprint races...

Maybe I could try it again now...  I did like the layout, and the facilities were decent.

I still don't understand why we don't have a March/April date there versus friggin July...

I'd heard that the track was bumpier this year but I didn't notice it.  A new track record was set this weekend so I'm assuming I'm not the only one who thought it was all right.  The surface of the paddock however...

Track surface seemed fantastic to me, I set a new personal best.    ;D

I think they are relocating the lake to the paddock area.  :P

Thanks B, but the only thing "hard" about me was the other racers trying to figure out how to get around the rolling obstacle with the 10 plate.  To put it simply, I sucked  :-[
