Title: Jessie Janisch @ Road America
Post by: motomadness on June 04, 2004, 09:33:27 AM
From his sponsor info, it looks like Kevin Hanson's Saftey First GSXR-1000 will be the bike Jessie will ride for the weekend.  It was reported on ussuperbike.com's live timing web broadcast that, in morning practice, Jessie did a 2:23.xx in the Superstock class, on his 10th of 11 laps.  That time puts him 15th on the grid (based on practice times), in front of a few top AMA regulars.  Not bad for his first AMA race weekend.  If there wasn't a red flag that came out early in the season, maybe Jessie could have lower his time even more given more time on the bike.

Good Luck Jessie.

Yeah, it's Kevin's bike.

I knew what was going to happen last week...Jesse didn't...LOL!

Jim Rashid from 4&6 is overseeing the suspension and trying to work with Jesse and the chassis.  I'll be heading over to Jesse's place tonight or tomorrow to see if I can do anything.

I will be interesting.  Best that he just has a good experience.  He's a very, very good rider, and he can run with the best of them...but he rides within the limits of what he feels the bike can do...so, he usually doesn't ball it up.  Anyway, it will be good.

I'll be there in the morning working with GP Tech.  Hopefully working with GP Tech.  Qualifying is looking really tough is practice is any indication of the race pace.

Quotebut he rides within the limits of what he feels the bike can do...so, he usually doesn't ball it up.

Hasn't he had like 4 really HARD crashes this year so far???

Don't get me wrong, Jessie's a phenom, and freak of nature but I thought he'd seen some BAD stuff this year.

Isn't that part of the game sometimes?  Try to do a pro event...try to race for high $$ contingency.  When you have to push past a comfort zone on a bike to try to find out what's past the envelope...well, sometimes you get away with it...sometimes you don't.

He got taken out at RA right in front of me going into three...not his fault.  He fell over at 12 in front of me.  Cold tires?  The weather was not condusive to really fast times or high levels of grip...so, the margin of safety can be reduced quite quickly.

Maybe tomorrow, but I think he's going to do a dirt track race Saturday evening....

Jessie ran Superstock, not Superbike.  He placed 15th out of 25 and was not lapped.

Way to go!

And don't forget Ben Carlson in 21st in Supersport.  Amateur, Expert, AMA all in one month!

In practice, he rode behind Ben Spies.  We saw Spies tap his tail at Carlson to say "follow me".  How cool is that!  He said American Suzuki was being super helpful.

Janisch, Hall and Ortega were great to see out there tearing it up.

It was such a great Road America this year!  We had a blast watching our friends and chasing legends.  Stumpy had his brush with fame...short version:  Stumpy and EBoz did a double-wheelie on the XRfiddy as Stumpy transported him back to the pits after he crashed at 14 during qualifying!  I caught Alex Gobert's LP hat at the podium for FX while standing next to Yvon Duhamel and TShort now has the inside scoop on the 600rr FX forks.  We lived it up and ate wayyyy to much!!!! :-X

Our new motto:  Just act like you own the place.

Too much Fun! The best things about the weekend.

Superstock Race, Hall looking over and shaking his head at us going into eight. (insert big red cowboy hat)

Siebkins, Sunday night Dave Sadowski hammered buying everyone drinks then trying to remember who he bought them for.

Ortega riding with a broken wrist and putting on a great show.

Miguel dragging his father out of the bar.

Later on that evening a picture with Miguel, myself and the big red cowboy hats. Josh hayes too.

Standing in pit lane for the start of both superbike races. Then being in the right spot as the umbrella girls came of the grid.

Just seeing everyone that was racing or not, enjoying the good weather and the great racing.

Sleeping in the van parked next to Siebkins only to be woken up at 4:30 am by my friend who had to be at work by 7:00 am in Chicago.

Stumpy, next year on the track!  I need more of the Champagne girl stickers. One is in a very prominent space at the bar and the other is in the hands of the HMC Ducati team.

Ah, but do you know that they have been running illegal HRC swingarms on those RR's?  Some serious questions being asked, but the AMA is floundering...if you had someone from American Honda on your board...

And they are pumping 150HP out of those RR's too.

The AMA was trying to tell John Ulrich that his swingarm was illegal because they made the caliper captive to the swingarm...

Honda's are replacements that are longer than the production unit...completely outside the rules...

150 HP out of a 600?!? Damn!

For the Honda swingarms, let me guess what the penalty is going to be: $3000 fine and a small slap on the wrist? Honda is probably saying that they are "pre-production units" that they didn't realize were longer, ala Suzuki wheel!?

Then you have a non-factory guy like Chouinard get dq'ed, fined and suspended for polishing valves with brillo pads  ::)

Jeez Dave, I didn't say he through his swingarm at me!  That might have hurt!  ;D

Frankly, I was just happy to be in the presence of Yvon.

Yup, I did read it.  I just wonder why it wasn't caught in tech the first 6 races unless they just added it now.

Let me just tell you what is hilarious about Hondas at our level.  When Stumpy bought his RR he got alot of "why would you get an RR and not an R6?" and "RRs are crap".  This year, several different people  have inquired to our team as to where Stumpy had his motor "built".  Heh.  The Honda wouldn't just be fast on it's own, now would it.   ;)

Rant over!

 :D

Heather

PS - Now that I think of it, I wish he would have thrown the swingarm.  We need the spares!!!

QuoteYup, I did read it.  I just wonder why it wasn't caught in tech the first 6 races unless they just added it now.

It was recently added.

It was found in tech, but then it was "lost" by the officials...

More examples of the corrupt system that makes up AMA Pro Racing.

Still, at this level, and in FUSA, who's winning expert races on RR's?

Parts cost?  Buy something for an RR then compare it to the same part on the R6.

There are still early generation R6's running around up front.

These are my opinions based on my own experiences.  Comparing much of anything to AMA...well, that's not reality.  Frames, wheels, brakes, motor internals...lots of goofy stuff going on there...would that same bike that Miguel rode in Supersport last year work for a regular club guy...probably not...set up, set up, set up.

Yeah, but the 03 R6, 03 Honda RR, and the Kaw RR & 636 all came out in the same model year...so.... ;D

Don't think that will bring down any other manufacturer's parts prices...

We were talking with one of the team owners Sun morning and he commented on Suzuki NA already courting Mr Carlson. We were watching him clean up on the B&S track a year or two ago and it looked then he might be a natural that is into training hard. Super cool kid too.

Say, on that Honda/Yamaha debate, is the cont. comparable at all? I had some Suzuki AMA SS guys next to me in the paddock in April, they had wanted to switch to R6s, but said that..."the money was gone." Did Yam ever say why they cut the $$ and has any other manufacurer done it as well? Hope this isn't a trend.

Yamaha is only paying 1st this year...Honda 1st-5th and Suzuki 1st-10th.  I don't remember Kawasaki off the top of my head.

If everyone rides an R6, what do you hear about all the time?  Until we get free bikes, we'll buy Hondas.  If it ain't broke, why fix it.

And, yes, SD, you are right-set up!  Stumpy's bike is set up simply and nice, thanks to your advice when we was a young racer buck (last year!) to concentrate on suspension.  We still get a chuckle out of the "built motor" bit, though.

Our new motto:  Just act like you own the place.

That's right.  All you do is just sort of elbow your way through the curtain of mechanics and crew members, so you can get a good closeup view of those tricky bits.  Then, when you can't quite figure out what the heck you're lookin at (what the heck *were* those little tubes next to the fork leg???) all you gotta do, is just grab the nearest dude wearin one of them funny lookin shirts, and ask him, "Yo! Dude - talk to me bout them tubes."  And he'll fill you in.  Works for me. ;D

Yeah tshort, it was kind of weird- I walked right into the Yosh area, found Reg O' Rourke I think his shirt said, and asked him what they were running for gearing. He waved me up and went over gearing, suspension set-up, and alternate set-ups for rain??!! I couldn't believe it. Right in our backyard. Beautiful. Of course the Hp #s were vague. :o

Easy way to drum up quick sales.  Offer killer contingency one year so everyone rushes out and buys an R6.  Then drop the contingency the next year.

I have an '03 R6 and love it.  I haven't put any seat time in yet on a new '04 Suzuki or an '03+ Honda (anybody care to let me take one for a lap or 3? ;))  My teammate has a Kawi... but he broke it before I could get the chance to really ride it hard.  He had some major setup issues with it though, that caused him to buy a new R6.

Stumpy

compressed gas, as in gas over oil suspension - just like the rear shock.  And they were Ohlins.  Very trick looking setup.  Shoulda asked him how much they cost (you know, are they those "$60,000 forks" we've heard about from time to time on this board? ;) :D)
