Title: How do you...
Post by: cornercamping on May 25, 2004, 05:23:34 PM
empty a 3/4 full propane tank  ???

I have one of those big 100 lb. tanks that I use to keep the garage warm while I fix (break) things all winter.  It's 3/4 full, but how do you empty it  ???  I"m moving soon, and I don't want to really make the trip with a full tank, nor will I use it again till winter.  I took it to the place where I get it filled at (hardware store) and they don't have a clue.  ???

It's not a stupid question.  How do you safely empty a propane tank  ???  How is that stupid  ??? Stupid would be just opening the valve and letting it drain.  I've never had to do it before, and I'm sure someone in here that uses a propane heater in their garage during the winter has had to do it sooner or later.  ;)

What's the big deal? Secure it well, and it will be fine. The DOT makes sure that tank designs will allow for easy safe transport.  :D No need to drain.

I heat with propane in the winter. You can empty it by sending it to me with those tires. ;D

I know a little about the propane so here are your options.

First, are you going to move yourself or is a moving company going to move you?  (I seriously doubt any moving company will move that tank, full or empty)

If you take the tank to a propane specific company, check the yellow pages, they can empty the tank for you.  Do not try this on your own, this stuff boils at minus 44 degrees and is very flammable!

If you want to move the tank yourself you can, provided that the tank is secured in a vertical position with the valve closed and a safety cap threaded over the valve.  You can't place the tank in an enclosed trailer or your car's back seat.  The tank must be in an open trailer of back of a pickup.

By the way, propane won't go bad and as long as the tank is in good condition will be safe for quite a long time.

Send me a PM is you want more information.

What's the big deal ???

If you were able to get it back to the hardware store, then I'm sure you can safely transport it to your new home.  You'll need to do it yourself anyway since moving companies aren't allowed to transport firearms and certain flammable agents.

Why go through the hassle of getting the tank purged and pay for it refilled again?  Surely not just because you don't want to make the trip with a near full tank.

Those containers are quite safe for travel.  I take a 20 lbs tank (the big one used with most gas grills) and heater to the track and when campiong and the weather is cold.

BTW, are you sure yours is 100 lbs? :o ???  How the hell do you get it back and forth for refill?

ROFLMAO

There's gotta be something cool you could do with 100 lbs of propane to get rid of it, I'm thinking a Mirage-like volcano show in the back yard...

Damn, I missed the party this morning  ;D

Dawn:  No tires are still sitting on the bike.  I will be sending them out though. Gotta get the tires changed out.  I should've waited to open my mouth until after I had them off the bike.  I figured back then I would've done atleast 10 tire changes by now.  I'll make sure he definetly gets them!

hawki: Thanks

H-man:  Yes, it's a 100 lb.  Big 4 ft. tall tank.   I can lift it myself.  I maybe scrawny (as Dawn called it, in my Vanson thread) but I got some muscles.

Zac: That's exactly what I was trying to avoid  ;D

A 100# tank holds 100# of propane which is approximately 24 gallons of liquid.  One gallon of propane weighs 4.24 lbs.  The tank itself weighs approximately 70# empty.  Some older tanks weighed over 100#'s.
Look on the collar of the tank and you will find a bunch of writing.  Find the "TW" and the digits after it indicate how mch the tank weighs by itself.  If you want to know how full it is just put it on a scale and subtract the TW (Tare Weight).  Buy one of those cheap hand trucks and strap the tank to it.  This will make moving it very simple.
Since the cost of oil has gone up, I'm sure that the price of propane has also.  Why pay twice for stuff that is good?

A .308 hollow point from 200 yards will empty it nicely

Sell the tank and fuel in it to the prospective buyers.  You are a RETARD.  Stop with the idio questions already.  I can't believe people respond to your crap with serious answers/comments. FAG.
