I know it will effect ours. What are your thoughts.

At the current rate, I may start using Vp's U4 in my truck cuz its cheaper... :P
Gas prices are still nickle and dime, over all we are only talking a small fraction of what it takes to make one weekend.. even for me, a shoe string racer.

If I understand your post correctly, your saying that the gas it takes to get to the track is only a small portion of the race weekend budget. Well that may be true, but for us - and for the Stumpy crew especially - none of the tracks are exactly close. At $2.50 a gallon (if it gets to that point) it would be approximately $125.00 for us just to get to BHF and back. Plus the price of race gas is going to go up too.
Everything is rising due to the increased fuel costs. Racing is fun, but we may be doing less of it this year.

So I take it that next time you offer to let me sleep in the motorpalace, I should be carrying ten gallons of unleaded when I walk through the door? ::)
Gas, grass or ass..... ;D

Based off of your post, you are saying it would take 50 gallons of gas to make it to Black Hawk.
If the going rate for gas is 2.50, it would cost you 125.00 to make the trip.
If the going rate of gas is 1.75, You would spend 87.5 to make the trip.
The added cost of a .75 hike in gas prices is 37.50
I just don't think the additional cost in that much when you look at what it takes to run two races and buy one set of tires.
Just my Number crunching Opinion
13X
True....
...but for the goods you purchase, shipping is part of the purchase price. The gas to get to Blackhawk is just one component. I'm sure that the tire vendors, parts distributors, and fuel distributors will be raising their prices simply because their costs are going up too. I'm already seeing it at the grocery store and the vending machines at work ::).
After filling up my car and the motorhome, writing out the check and seeing the big divit it left in my account, it kinda hit me what a snowball effect higher gas prices will be. Currently the cost for a barrel of oil is $40.00; when gas prices were > $1.75 it was $30.00 a barrel, some indicators show that the cost for a barrel of oil could be $50.00 by Memorial day.
We'll still go to BHF, but tracks that are farther away maybe not. We can have just as much fun packing up the dirt bikes, hitting the trails in WI.
Guys... When your wife asks for more money for the grocery budget, take her word for it. It's just more expensive.

Here in our area ( Norther VA, DC, MD, WV) gas hikes are the norm. I just go to the cheepest place. Down the street in DC its 2.25, home in MD its 2.05. But each place station is diff. We go to the off brands in WV and in MD and pay 1.98 to 2.05. Economies of scale is diff for each person.
Nope, won't affect me one bit. They keep a raisin', I keep a payin'.
I did start running VP U4 though since premium was +$2.25/gal...
Oh, BTW, if you DO run pump gas, check with your state. Most states have a form for tax refunds on all fuel purchases which are for off-road uses.

But Jeff, we ROAD race. ;D ;D ;D

It helps me a lot that my parents own an oil business. ;D
It hasnt affected my travel plans, but I am looking into getting a commuter car to drive to work. Putting $75 into the truck every week is getting old.
Won't affect me either. Of course since I have to work on many race weekends, I don't really have much choice.
I commute by bike (70 miles round trip), have done so regularly since about 1982. Saves about $3.50 per day even though the price of diesel is much lower than premium gas. I ride about 180 to 200 days per year. Insurance is less than $200 per year (1997 BMW R1100RT). Maybe people will put more thought into their next vehicle purchase.
People should not have expected the price of gas to stay low forever. It was $1.25 for regular when I started driving in 1979. Corrected for inflation, gas prices (regular) would have to reach something like $2.80 to be the same as prices in 1981.

They're not reaping any benefits from the prices being so high, believe me. Imagine them ordering 5 transport loads at a time and how much more that costs them. Kinda scary sometimes...
It's at least nice to get my stuff at cost though. ;D

Howcome you don't race camels?
Rising gas prices?
Bah. I have a diesel. $1.78/gal at the T/A in Marengo ;D... premium at the Mobil down the street from me? $2.35.
QuoteHowcome you don't race camels?
Camel's in the shop. Gotta run the SV instead.

I was going to the Cali races with a Toyhauler being towed by an Expedition. The Expo was getting 5-6 MPG. We would stop and fill up every 130-150 miles. Each fill up was at least $30.00. That was at the prices from last year. A trip to Streets of Willow was somewhere around 700-800 miles roundtrip. You do the math....my head hurts and I'm getting depressed.
This year, I have a brand new Superduty Diesel! ;D
Now our diesel fuel prices are hovering around the $2.00/gal. mark. Fortunately, I get about 10-12 MPG with the Superduty, but that only HELPS offset the cost of the trip.
I need a fuel sponsor, but not for my bike. :-/ :( >:(
Ok, yeah, the gas and fuel prices are making things rough.
But follow everything through...
My wife went grocery shopping last week and milk was like $3.30 a gallon. That's incredible!
The trailers that I sell have went up again in cost. Each thing that gets shipped anywhere, milk, Twinkies, CocoPuffs, cheese, meat, people...well, just about everything, gets there by freight by plane or truck...using diesel fuel or something similar...JP4, jet fuel, etc... Those prices are way up too in a market that usually has very consistent pricing.
So, your trip might not cost that much more, so to speak, but everything else still costs more too. Does that help the economy for anyone? If you've got to make a choice between buying gas to go racing or to buy food for the kids, well, you need to buy food.
It's only time before we'll see entry fees go up next for 2005 because the cost of getting CCS staff and cost of goods have gone up.
With the price of diesel lower than it was this winter, I'm pretty happy
WHHAAAAAT? Diesel cheaper than it was this winter? Where are you? Our Diesel is 1.80 a gallon- it was a buck fifty most of the winter. I actually figured out fuel expense for doin Topeka-$200 before signing up for a single race!!! A conservative estimate I heard put the extra fuel costs to Americans across the country at $42 Billion if prices stay where they are for the next 6 months. When it costs $12 to top off a street bike you know we're in trouble.
i don't know where you are, but in the northeast, diesel jumps through the roof in the winter since its just home heating oil, which gets pricey in the winter.
my last fill up i paid 1.65 for diesel
We're in Wisconsin. Back in the 70's and early 80's we had a cabin in Washburn County. The parents would load all five of us kids in a MB 240 DL. Great car. Five boys and an Irish setter, two parents. We all had to get bigger and that was the time of the early GM efforts for diesels. We piled into the Olds wagon, dirt bike on the bumper, pulling a fishing boat. Those motors left us stranded in northern WI so many times. Man, the old man kept gettin factory rebuilds under warranty. Then, the recession of the 80s hit, about '81, and that diesel was the bomb as gas prices and everything else hit the roof.
I'll never forget those endless days on the county trails, me and my DS125, and my cousin with his IT 175 that we were always rebuilding. Brothers that had they're CRs, KXs, and XLs. Come back to the lake and go for a skinny dip. It's been too long since I was on those trails. :'( I think it's time to go back.
None of it would've happened w/o those diesels hauling the bikes and family. A few years back we bought the SuperDuty. My family thought I was nuts and asked questions like, " Are you starting a moving company? It's not like there's a .25 cent difference in fuel prices. " Oh well, I think I saw an ATK 605 for sale on the roadside some where. Is there a motard class that'd fit in? :)
Quotemy last fill up i paid 1.65 for diesel
My last fill up I paid $2.19 for diesel!!!
My SD gets 18-19 unlaiden, combo driving. My tank is 29 gallons but holds 32. I can see anywhere from 500 to 550 miles between fill ups, which is good because I have enough time to save for them.
Premiun unleaded just went DOWN to $2.13 at the local Gas City. Diesel is still $2.19. My only benefit is that light-class diesels get an additional $.08/gal. discount in AZ. That gets me all of $2.50 back in my pocket after spending $75.00...whooopeeee!, I can buy a donut.
Bottom line...I spent somewhere near 40k and justified, among other things, the lower fuel cost to my wife. Now THAT'S definitely out the window.
My '95 Dodge Cummins gets 25mpg unloaded and 15mpg hauling the 15k# tag trailer. I do 700 miles unloaded between fillups and 400 miles when towing.
It was great going down south where I was seeing diesel for 1.35 (somewhere in Georgia on the truck stops) but its gets pretty cheap in Virginia too.
Hey Web, lemme guess, you got the 6 speed?
$2.19 - diesel! Holy crap batman!
We're at $2.11-2.15 - reg unleaded and $1.82 - diesel.
My vans are 15mpg combo driving - gas
19-21mpg combo - diesel.
Diesel's cheaper and I can pump $70 worth of it quick enough to ignore the pain...
Here's average prices on fuel and gas across the country...Actually seem to look similar to what I see.
With the huge spikes between states that are next to each other, you can see which governments like to screw everyone....
http://198.6.95.31/sbsavg.asp
QuoteHey Web, lemme guess, you got the 6 speed?
nope, a custom built 4 speed auto and a lot of engine goodies to make it more powerful and more economical at the same time (laser honed injectors, fueling plates, bigger turbo, etc)
i just paid 2.45/gallon for 89 octane.. my car is supposed to run on super but at 2.56 a gallon i guess ill have to compromise for now...
this is bullshit..
and yes, it will change my travel plans. i already commute 500-600 miles a week, so anything i can save is a big help.
I also will be travelling less. I've put on an average of over 650 miles/week since I bought my car last November! :o
Paying $240/Month for Gasoline sucks! >:(
Hoping to get the $ together to get a bike in a couple months. Decreased Gas and parking costs will offset the increased maintenance and insurance, keeping total costs about the same. Being on 2 wheels would make paying for gas a lot more tolerable. 8)
Having a street bike sure helps with the daily commute. I do 350 miles a week to work and back. My subie isn't exactly a gas guzzler at 25mpg but it only takes super. My street bike easily gets over 40mpg and in city parking is free (vs $20 in a lot).

Oh yeah. I'll take the 50mpg of the street bike over the 18mpg of my truck ANY day. I'd be riding to work a lot more if it would JUST QUIT RAINING!!!!

Rainsuit. I just keep mine in a saddlebag, I don't even bother checking if it is going to rain. The laptop goes in the trunk.
QuoteThe laptop goes in the trunk.
That is my main issue. The Blackbird doesn't have a trunk... and the Softail only has a little soft bag on the back - not big enough for my laptop.
It's ok, I'll survive... I like driving my truck ;D
What!? No trunk?
Next you are going to tell me that not all bikes have heated grips, an electrically adjustable windshield, a gear indicator, a fuel gauge, and a clock.
