How thick should ice be before its kind of safe to skate on. (I race motorcycles so it doesn't have to be totally safe.) OK. What about safe safe in case my kids want to skate also?

It was 3-4" It was perfect. No Zamboni required. It's been in the low teens for a couple of weeks and hasn't snowed. As smooth as glass. Puck handleing was a little iffy. It was raining just a tad. Skated for about an hour before the cops ran me off. B.S. I say! Isn't there a donut shop needing attention? >:(
