Title: Silencing a generator
Post by: MadXX on January 13, 2004, 07:06:49 AM
Has anyone had luck putting a different exhaust on a generator to quiet it down?  I dont want to have to drop over a grand for a quiet generator but I also dont want to have to listen to an obnoxiously loud generator all day either.

Any suggestions?

Instead of replacing the exhaust... why dont you make a 3 panel deflector to put around it. Simple and cheap to make. Just a suggestion.

Probably the best answer.

Cooling fins and the actual cooling shroud do contribute to the overall sound.  A different exhaust will potentially build up more heat.

Directing the sound another direction with a pipe might help a bit.

Hey Mark, can you make some of these for your pit bikes?   ;D  :o  :P

My teammate did an excellent job of silencing my generator.  He begged me to loan it to him, so against my better judgement I did.  He hauled it home on it's side and let all the oil drain out.  Of course he says he told me this.  The next time I went to use the generator, it was permanently silenced. >:( >:( >:(

The deflector is a good idea, never thought of that.   Whatever I do I'll try not to point it at my neighbors...

We've got a guy out here with a stock gixxer slip-on grafted onto his generator.  It is somewhat quieter.  Wish I had a pic.

I looked into this myself, and after a little observation and testing, it turned out that the muffler on my generator was actually quiet, but the motor / generator was very noisy. I even temp. mounted a stock ducati pipe on it, with no effect.
I think the real solution aside from buying a Honda generator is to fabricate a 3 sided box as was previously mentioned. Just be sure you don't kill the air flow or you'll fry the thing.

Another way it to hook a long tube to the exhaust and route it so it ends up under the Kegals racing trailer. With as noisy as those Buells are, they'll never hear it. :D :D :D

Yep, ours has a box around it, and it's not that loud.  It's a box with wheels, a bed, fridge, shower, TV, microwave....   :D ;)

are you putting a top on this box or just 3 sides?

Look in a grainger catalog or contact a small engine parts supplier to find a muffler for the engine.  Typically those engines are made by Honda or Tecumseh and a better muffler will make a huge difference.  Just make sure you get the right muffler for your engine manufacturer and size.

As long as they use race fuel in it Rob... "I love the smell of race gas in the morning"  :o ;D

the three sided box works we tried to put a top and you could barly hear it but it got to hot and did not want to keep running.put carpet pad in the face of the box (the inside )and you will notice a big diferance
