Title: The day I beat Nicky Hayden -almost-
Post by: Jeff on December 22, 2003, 05:49:27 AM
The sun was out, although it was a bit cool.  The track was somewhere in Virginia.  I know this because I argued with track personnel and after calling them several unmentionable names, they said in a mocking way "it must be because we're from Virginia".

The bikes were small.  This was absolutely to my advantage.  Couldn't have been bigger than 125cc GP's.

After the launch which involved foot paddling down the track, the bikes began to pick up pace.  Top speed couldn't have been more than 70, and it seemed to take a week to get there.  Although I got the layout down after several laps, I could not now tell you how the track went.

Following the first few laps, I could see everyone in front of me and began picking them off one by one as we went through the turns.  My secret?  No brakes.  There was no need to.  Just solid momentum.  It was then that I saw the 69 tail, of the bike, and N-I(with a STAR)-C-K-Y on the back.

Coming into the next corner, he touched the brakes, and I did not.  Up the inside of him, I was around and in the lead.  I looked back to see him tuck his head down as hard as he could, and pin the bumble-bee, stretching the throttle cables.  The look on his face was priceless.

On the white flag lap, track personnel were getting ready to line up folks for the next race and they were standing all over the track.  They got in my way and I had to completely stop.  Furious and screaming at them, I finally got the bike rolling again, but Nicky had gone past.  I wrung that throttle til it bled, but there was no making up for the momentum lost.

Crossing the line second, I had experienced ultimate defeat and disappointment.  At that moment, a good dream had gone bad...

... and then I woke up ....

But it does beat those 1/2 awake 1/2 asleep dreams where I lowside or highside and jump about 2' out of bed scaring the crap out of my wife  ;D

I've actually been woken up by Stump's highside dreams.

Last night I had anxiety dreams that I brought my weiner dog to Road America and he was running loose through the pits.  Good lord.

Heather

PS - Jeff, if it makes you feel better, two nights ago Nicky came to visit us wearing his cute white Repsol polo shirt.  It was very exciting.

Last night I was apparently trying to qualify for AMA Superbike at Road America (that's what I get for watching reruns before I go to bed).  The rerun I watched was from 2000 or 2001 when Rapp hit his brake lever on Kocinski's bike and did a stoppie-from-hell.  Thankfully I only lowsided in my dream.  For some reason, I was on my buddy's motard too.  Not the perfect bike for that track...
