Title: More SV questions
Post by: sdiver68 on November 26, 2003, 10:20:23 AM
1)  What advantage is there to the bodywork, other than the fact that it looks cool?  Aren't there catch pans available?

2)  Any advantage to starting with an 'S' model, versus the base, 03 or newer?

On tracks with long straights such as Road America and MAM....  Paul noticed a difference between the full body work and just the upper that he was running in the beginning of the year.

The full body work allowed the air to flow around him better.  With just the small upper he was running before, his body acted like a big parachute.

On the smaller tighter tracks, it didn't make any difference.

I think the S model has clip-ons vs a proper handlebar,  rearsets that are further back and different gearing over the standard model.

Since those will all be changed anyway (for racing), you might be better off to get the naked model and start from there.

Glad to hear that you are still thinking of racing next year! :)

So you're planning to run an SV next year Steve?

Is that what YPS is doing too?

Thanks, i was thinking that but wanted to make sure, and with the SV posse on this board, how could I not ask?

Yeah, we'll see.  I'm thinking limited schedule get back into the groove next year.  By March i'll probably be pre-entered for the entire season 6 events per weekend 2 bikes lol :O

1 of several ideas I'm kicking around, but since I have time off now I thought what a good time to go ahead and prep a bike.

I'm having a brainfreeze on YPS?

Sorry, probably should have been a separate post.  YPS=Yellow Plated Sandbagger=Kevin Clark   ;)

I thought I'd read that he was thinking about an SV for next year too.  I just might be on that same bandwagon...

yeah, the rearsets on the s model have more ground clearance than the nekkid, but still not nearly enough. you'll end up buying aftermarket rearsets regardless of which one you buy.

oh, if you go the bellypan way for bodywork and need some cheap bodywork, let me know. i have a set of scuffed street bodywork if yours is nice and shiny and you don't want to hurt it. :)

The 03 Sv650 has more top end but lacks in bottom to middle compared to the older ones.  Not too sure if anything is going to change for the 04's?

Some changes are in store for the 04s. From what we know right now, lower subframe/exhaust, and looks like the S model might get teh naked model rearsets (even lower).

Dunno anything more yet, as suzuki hasn't released the info!  :o

According to Cycle World the 2003 standard model has 1.5mm less offset in the triple clamps and a 4mm longer swingarm than the S model. I don't know which one would be better for roadracing though. I would think the longer swingram and increased trail would be better because it should give better feel on the front and better hook up. Anybody know for sure? Any suspension pros out there?

Doesnt that decrease trail? Are you sure the S has the shorter swingarm?

No. less offset increases trail. Trail is the distance from the center of the wheel at the point it touches the ground to a point on the ground where the center of the pivot point would intersect the ground if it was carried  down in a straight line with the fork angle. Less offset moves the wheel back thus increasing the distance to the previous point. Trail is what causes a motorcycles front wheel to self center when you are moving.Increasing the trail will make the bike more stable and also put more weight on the front tire as you will be moving the tire closer to the engine. As far as this info on the SV I am only quoting what I read in Cycle World. Suzuki doesn't give those specs on their website but it does give wheelbase numbers and I think the S has a longer wheelbase by around 15 mm. So who knows
