Title: Amateur/Expert Debate Opinions Wanted
Post by: MightyDuc Racing on September 25, 2003, 05:06:00 PM
I am considering turning Expert at the final round at Homestead after the ROC in December so I can see what I've got for the top riders and also for a shot at some cash in GT Lights.  However, I have the opportunity to finish in the top five in points (which earns a certificate at the banquet) in three separate classes if I race as an Amateur there.  I am locked for the top five in Lightweight GP, but would probably get passed by several riders in Supertwins and GT Lights if I turn Expert early since it is a double points race.  What do you think I should do...turn Expert or stay Amateur one more round?

What's a certificate worth?

What's it worth to race with faster riders and learn something for next season?

I say go for the white plates.

Waiting until next season will have its' advantages. Not only will you possibly get some more trophies for the collection this season, but you will also be on a much more level playing field waiting till next season. What I mean by this is that at the end of the season everybody is up to speed, at the start of the season speeds are lower and competition isn't quite as fierce. This gives you a little bit of time to blend into the expert competition before the racing gets too crazy.

Cherish the temporary amateur status while you have it, you'll be expert soon enough (next season isn't that far off!). You'll probably find the switch will be more intimidating than anything at first. If your speed had been an issue as an amateur you possibly would have been moved up mid-season anyways, so since that wasn't the case just finish it out and enjoy it! :)

I agree with Mike.  Finish out the season as an amature and add your good finishes to your resume.

Plus, could you, or would you please change your avatar?  Those bananas....  are annoying.

Thanks!

Paul, Mike, and Dawn have valid points. But in my opinion, I would have to agree more with Mike and Dawn... wait till next season to turn expert. Get all the glory you can as an amateur... Get your certificates and add them to your resume and portfolio for next year. Enjoy the rest of this season and go expert next year.

I'm a little confused here. Doesn't CCS determine when you move up/down? ???

QuoteI'm a little confused here. Doesn't CCS determine when you move up/down? ???

The first year you race you are an amateur.  There have been a few times that amateurs have been bumped upto experts status mid year.  This is due to a decision from the Race director/referee in that region (no need to go into the reason why now).  A person can also request to be moved to Expert.

At the end of the year, if you earn 500 points in certain classes, you will automatically be bumped up unless you request CCS keep you an amateur, but you better have a valid reason.

The thing is...I am already on pace with the top experts, and the two main competitors of mine will probably be making the jump early as well.  I don't want to ride around Homestead bored, even if it's way out in front.  I think I'll wait and see how it goes at the ROC before I decide.

One of the reasons I'd say go Expert is that  I too run Super Twins Am. I get to see you on the grid, then run off with the leaders, {at least stay close}  Of coarse my old Super Hawk don't keep up and my poor Collar Bone still has my shoulder weak, {my excuses} But I've been to most events and also in the points, so my opinion is biased toward saying go Expert where I could move up, or stay where I am in the points!  {kind of a joke}

While I think you certainly ride at the Expert level, getting those certificate's as an Amateur would have a positive effect on your long term goals.
Nice speaking with you at Moroso.

Keep it simple, flip a coin after after Daytona.

This guy is a legend in his own mind, turn expet as soon as possible, no need to. He already thinks he can run with the pros in AMA. I say take your red tires to team Suzuki and see if they will give you a ride next to Yates and Matt for the 04 season. He really doesnt need to run expert in ccs Fla, he can go straight to the AMA, hes fast enough, really. :P

Do certificates make you faster?

I was just looking at the schedule for the event in question and I see that you already run in the same race with the experts. I would assume that if your as fast as you say you are that you already race with the experts during these races anyways, so what's the difference in doing it with a yellow plate or a white one? At least doing it with the yellow plate will be rewarding on top of it. The way I'm thinking is that those certificates of accomplishment show your achievement of an entire seasons efforts, not just 1 event. It sounds like you earned those rewards, why toss them at the last event?

I actually have to start from like 10 seconds + back in the second wave, so I don't get to run with the top guys.  Decisions, decisions.

Figures....the year I can't make it to ROC....we have Mr. Ego going.  Damn damn damn!!!

Wait until next year.  Cause at the end of the year every expert will be running fast.  And while you might be fast in your region....are you fast compared to all of them?

Either way....springtime nickname for you....  Meat.  :-)

Notice the "...lol. ;D" at the end of my statement?  Mine and James' badgering goes WAY back to early in the season.  I am not a cocky rider.  However, if that's the way you feel...bring it. ;)  By the way...my region has the top TWO finishing lightweight riders from last year's ROC, John Linder and Alex Ferreira, and yes I am only a second or so off of their pace at the most. :P

1.  Please note the smiley face at the end of my post.

2.  Trash talking - a time honored ritual.

3.  Every fast amateur expects to wax the "Fast Guys" when they go expert.  Again...time honored tradition.

4.  Stay amateur...take a shot at a national trophy as an amateur.  There is no shame in it....a national win is a national win...no matter what class.  You generally only get one shot at it without being called a sandbagger....you should take it.

5.  And yeah...you are enthusiastic.  But to quote Run DMC..."You Talk Too Much".  :-)  (Note again...smiley face.)

6.  Feel free to give me shit at Daytona in the spring.  Please...use a large two handled shovel.  You'll fit right in with my friends.

I'll look forward to it. ;D  I will be turning expert AFTER the ROC this year.  I don't expect to whip the experts by any means, but I do expect to be able to run with them and have a crap load of fun.  There should be anywhere between 5 and 7 of us battling at the front of all of the lightweight races down here next year.  Can't wait!  See ya in March! ;)

It's "deer" dumbarse.  And I'd be worried that you might fall and break a hip if we push too hard on the track you old cue-tip.  At least you chumps are giving me a reason to practice and ride that much harder next year...lol.  Bring it to Jennings, where your hp advantage won't exist and we'll have at it.  Heck...I'll even enter the UL GP to give you your shot at me.  By the way, I ran my "cheater" bike against the 600's in GTU and did just fine.  Oh yeah...podium in Supertwins too, battling with expert and former Battle of the Twins champ Doug Gross on his 996.  I figure he's only got about 35 horsepower or so on me.  I got ur cheater right here baby.

Damn....spelling lessons from Bambi.  That's what I get for typing on 4 hours of sleep in 3 days.  (Like I said...new rugrat ya know.)

Uh....don't you be worrying about these old bones.  Hip?  Breaking it?  Not likely.  If getting run over by a GSXR600 in a race didn't do it ...the  q-tip sure ain't gonna cut it.  :-)  (Not hat I didn't have some impressive bruises and bodily violations because of it.)

FYI....I wouldn't call somebody a cheater for having a good engine.  You build what the class allows if you can afford it.  What good is winning is you are cheating?  It's a hollow victory in my book.

And drive to Moroso?  Not this year!  (Diaper duty calls ya know.)  Now VIR next spring...suuuure.  It's not my home track.  Or maybe Roebling.  I haven't been there since about 2 years.  Hmmmmmm....

1.  Great.  If I haven't heard a particular line I'll steal it.  Who's gonna believe a car salesman over anybody?

2.  You admit being a car salesman?  Did I mention that I think Tormenting Car salesmen should be an Olympic sport?  Last time I bought a vehicle I showed up with my backpack, food, drinks, cellphone, notebook, car research, book, magazines, and laptop.  The only thing I was missing to make it really grueling on the guy was a catheter.  :-)

3.  As a salesman....ya ever been thrown out of yer  own office by a customer?  Been there done that.  hehehehe

QuoteI'm working on Sean to get my bike legal in WERA lightweight.  Right now I'd only be able to run against 1000cc 4's for the most part.  If I make it to RR, ur on for the Mexican.  I just hope you can handle being whipped by a first year expert that's also a car salesman.  By the way, I throw out the people that try to screw with me during a sale...and my managers love me for it. ;D

Hmmm....sounds like I'm gonna be eating well at Roebling.  Which race?  Remember...I'm on an SV.  I don't know what you are riding other than a ducati.  Is it Heavyweight Sportsman legal?  Or do I have to embaress you in supertwins?  Hehehe

So you are gonna bet me?  Then you are gonna bet Monkeyboy?  Daaamn.  Your food bills are gonna be higher then your tire bills.  :-)

I run GT Lights, LW GP, and Supertwins.  I also run GTU sometimes.  I have never been to RR, but I prolly have the hp edge, so I'm hoping that'll make us even, MudPuppy.  Embarrassed in Supertwins?  I'll believe it when I see it. ;)  The bet is between us, or do you need others to help you trash talk so you can feel cool?  Like I said...bring it, but no crying if (when) I smoke ya. ;D

Niiice.  Just the classes I run in.  And before ya brag...ya might want to look at the results of the guys you plan on beating.....otherwise you might just end of beating yourself.  (And that's just not right with women and children around.)

Oh yeah...you so sure you got hp on me?  I ride an sv....sure....but it ain't your gran-pappy's sv.  :-)

Just fyi....Roebling isn't really a hp track.  It's mostly open corners and all sorts of cornering speed.  It's deceptively fast and eats motorcycles.  Been there and sacrificed 4 bikes in 5 years.  DOH!

And why would we go to Moroso?  What...16 hours+ of driving...for all the races on 1 Sunday?  Ugh.  I prefer the normal CCS schedule of races both days on the weekend.

Anyhoo...Bambi Burgers anyone?  :-)

Hey mightyduck, no, I should say mightykook, you have no idea how fast MudDawg is. He has even beaten Darren D. a few times this year. If you dont know Darren, he is the fastest LW racer in the SE, Midatlantic on a SS legal SV. I would have to say you are in way over your head once again as you wouldnt even be able to out run me at roebling doing 1-20s. There is also a fast kid, James Chance from Savannah, that can turn 1-18s on a SS SV. You are out of your league, just stay in Fla and save your ego for the Fla boys. BTW you just dont decide to turn expert, you have to have enough points at the end of the season, which you have, then CCS will make you expert for the next year or CCS choses to move you up during the season because you are fast enough, which they never do unless you get protested a bunch. You have been on the ground more this year than you have finished so why do you think you should turn expert early, because you managed to win a race or two when your bike didnt blow up, then came in mid pack at the rest?? :P

I've only raced a few times this year.  :-)  Next year though....The wife knows I need my racing fix badly!!!

Anybody know how Darren is doing?  I know he got hurt at Roebling not too long ago.  I like racing Darren...he's good, a clean rider, and makes ya work to beat him.

As for Roebling...the last time I was there I was doing 1:18's pretty easily.  I'm faster now than I was then....seemingly about 2 seconds a lap faster at the tracks I did visit this year.   Who knows...maybe 1:17's?  But that's certainly hauling around RRR.  Anything below 1:19 is not slow in my book....no matter what bike.

As for Bambi......he's learning the fine art of Trash Talking.  Next is the even more important art of Eating Crow.  (Otherwise known as paying up when you lose the bet!!!)  Heheheh

Hey Monkey-Boy....how's the wrist now?

Damn!!!!  I think the moral of the story is "shut your mouth when grown folks are talkin'" lol :o

Dawg, Darrin is doing much better but he made comments about only doing FUSA thunderbike next year so I am not sure if we will see him.
You hit the nail on the head in his description, I was right on him the whole weekend @ VIR but he takes the exact same line as me around the whole damn track, making a pass pretty hard.

But seriously Mr Duck., the expert feild is not a laughing matter. I learned big time when I went expert not that long ago. Keep in mind, I was a fast amateur but found myself mid-pack at best my first year expert. Top five LW experts, like Muddawg, Badmonkey, myself and others will probably be 2 to 3 seconds faster on any track regardless of HP.
Find out what you are running (lap time's). Then find out what the top five expert's are running in your area. If you are within 2 seconds of them, you will make that up by being out there with them. If you are not, I would reccommend you stay amateur and gain some more experience.

BTW - I have been meaning to ask but how is a 944 Ducati legal for LW racing?? I thought the limit was 805 or something. I may be wrong but just thought I would ask.

We all say the same thing as Darrin after a nasty wreck. (Er....well...maybe.  I was on the track the next day with a drain shunt in my abdomen. DOH!)

Fast amateurs are usually midpack or a bit better in the experts.  Some are near the front of the pack.  Darrin was very lucky this year.  He's damn fast...but also the normal top 5 were mostly missing from last year's races.  (Me, Donnie Unger - broken back, Sebastian DePinto - Jail for molesting a sheep, Romeo Carelli - taking time off, Bill Dietz, Brian Kcraget, etc)  That would have put Darrin as probably a top 5 contender.

I do have to say he's definately a good guy.  He had pulled a perfect weekend of all wins at Summit.  We went to VIR and he had won everything until LTSB (I think that was it.)  I clawed my way through the pack (doing 36's lap after lap on the sv) and basic pulled a stalker move on him on the last lap.  Despite foiling a perfect weekend he was a perfect sportsman and congratulated me later.  We ain't winning millions here...just friends.  :)

Us Florida boys can ride a bit better than ya'll seem to think.  And yes, I'm generally running the same laptimes or within about a second of the top experts in our region (can you say last year's national champs, John Linder and Alex Ferreira?).  If I lose, I pay up, but if I win you are gonna have to eat a lot of poopie. ;D  I sure hope the budget lets me get up there next year.

By the way, if you've ever been to Moroso, I did a 1:44.3 last month, with Scuba Steve and Michael Mills in tow.  I imagine that's comparable with a 1:17 at Roebling possibly?

I have already been told I can turn Expert early if I choose, and I already finish ahead of mid-pack in the Expert class coming from the second wave. (4th overall when there were 20+ experts out there)  You're right though...I must be slow cuz I've only raced in Florida.  You all keep thinking that and hopefully I'll be eatin' like a King next year.  ;D  I'm not trying to toot my own horn by any means, cuz I really have a TON to learn still, but I gotta stand up for us FL boys! ;)

All you had to do to find out about the red tire session was read my race report.  I'm not giving up on that company just yet, and am looking forward to trying them again at a track day soon.  As far as tooting my own horn...we can't all sell some heart gizmo and come on the BBS and brag about how much money we make all the time, so I gotta advertise myself and my abilities as best as I can to help get sponsors.  I have never posted anything that was exaggerated or untrue about my riding or in my race reports, so blow me turd boy. ;)

Bah....regional championships are all about consistancy.  I've taken the past two season and spent most of my time on personal stuff (marriage & new baby)  Next season I'm planning on working on my consistancy to see if I can improve my starts and laptimes.

I'm one of those annoying ride-by-feel guys.  Most tracks I have maybe 1 or 2 reference points on the whole track.  To improve I have to change that.  So I figure I should concentrate on practice and skills...not championships.  You know...gotta get that race-aggressiveness going again.  :)

Yea,        What she said.

Go expert if you must young Jeti, but you will not get the points so easy with the White's.  And you only have one chance to go back.
 :P
QuoteThe first year you race you are an amateur.

I Would go alone with this one.

If (example) You are getting lapped in Supertwins Now, Which is offten a combined race, It is just going to hurt your ego to go expert now.  All holds are off at the end of the season.  Start off a new season (freash)as expert would probubly be wise.

I wouldn't do it.  This was an important thread that was good to read.  But who ever replied to the four year old post pulled it back up.

In ways, it's a sweet reminder of a person.
