Title: Race director's son in motorcycle accident
Post by: amydiaz on July 29, 2003, 02:27:58 PM
For those of you who know Adam Fehrman, he was in a motorcycle accident yesterday while heading home from work.  He is the son to Bill Fehrman, Race Director for the MW/GL Region.  He is in ICU with a lacerated liver.  He does have full range of motion of arms, legs, and neck.  Please keep him in mind and wish him a speedy recovery.

Nothing new has changed since yesterday.  They are hoping to move him out of ICU tomorrow or Friday that is if everything goes well these next couple of days.

I will try to get an address where cards can be sent to.

Thanks everyone for the support and encouraging words.  I will keep you posted as to how everything is going.

Good News.  They are going to be moving Adam to his own room some time later on this evening.  His doctor is not sure how long he will have to remain in the hospital though, but at least this is a good sign.

Cards may be sent to:

St. Elizabeth Hospital
C/O Adam Fehrman - Room:  406-1
1506 S. Oneida Street
Appleton WI  54915

Thank you all again.

How is Adam really?  I mean is he asking about his bike and all...

Was he riding his GSXR600?

Tell us more...

Dave - Yes, he was on the GSXR600.  It is pretty trashed.  He just started asking about the bike yesterday.  He does not talk very much as they are keeping him on some pretty good drugs and has a tube down his throat.  I know he had hoped to go to BHF for the Wegman weekend, but unsure now how things are going if he is going to be able to make it.

True motorcycle guy, ask about the bike first. Adams a youngster and he's pretty strong, I'm sure he'll make a full recovery with our prayers.

Get better dude, you owe me a race.... :)

Good, he's talking about he bike...LOL!

Yeah, I'm sure we all hope he can make it.  Maybe we can build a big gurnee for him using his GSXR600 motor!  Part of the pit bike races?

Tell him I told him that's what we should do...(he'll probably punt my bottom later.... ;D)

Hope all is well.  I'll try to get a note out to him too.

Dave, I told him last night that you had asked if he was asking about his bike and he just laughed.  The bad thing is that they decided at the bike shop that it was totaled.  Of course now the new thing is, "At least I get to get a new bike, but not till 2030 when all the medical bills are paid up."  No medical insurance, but at least the bike is covered was his thinking.

QuoteNo medical insurance, but at least the bike is covered was his thinking.

Oh wow. That sucks. :( There might be some medical coverage associated with the auto policy.
Title: Re: Race director's son in motorcycle accident
Post by: amydiaz on August 01, 2003, 07:34:44 AM
We have already checked into that.  There is no coverage on himself only the bike.  There might be $1000 that will cover him but that was used up with the ride to the hospital via ambulance.

Was the accident his fault?  Does he have any medical insurance through his job that might cover him?  I never carried medical on my bike, but always made sure that motorcycle injuries were not excluded on my health insurance through work.  Sounds like Adam may be declaring bankruptcy in about a year...  Hey, at least he's still with us!
Title: Re: Race director's son in motorcycle accident
Post by: amydiaz on August 01, 2003, 11:40:35 AM
Yes it was his fault as the car stopped suddenly to turn so therefore in Wisconsin if you rear-end someone it is your fault.  Secondly, he just got hired on to a new company so his insurance does not kick in for 30 days...sucks.

Who needs to claim bankruptcy when ya have parents like ours.  Ha. Ha.  Guess mom and dad will be working for a few more years and adam will be working till he is 100.

Amy,

Did he have insurance with his previous job?  Is so, he may be entitled to still exercise his COBRA rights.  My recollection is that if he did not decline COBRA, he may elect or opt in for up to 90 days after leaving the job.  Payment from date of terminiation is required.  Perhaps someone on board who is knowlegeable of HIPPA and COBRA could comment?

Please say hi to Bill for me.  He is too young to retire  :P anyway, not like me  ;)

Ok, the bike is totalled...

...IT'S TIME FOR ADAM TO START RACING!!!

You have no money, you have no insurance, you live at home...

Start your career today!

Sounds like my life...

Jack, I need a Super Dave poster boy picture please...

Tell, Adam, that he should buy his bike out of the salvage pool.  I'm sure that the motor would fit into a really cool LA-Z- BOY...that's what I always wanted to do...wait, I still do ;D

I'll double-check when I get to work tomorrow, but I'm pretty certain that if it has been less than 30 days since he left his old job, he can pay COBRA and be covered.

Hey all.  I thought I would give you an update on Adam's condition.  Everything seems to be healing well.  It is going to be a slow but sure recovery.  The doctor thinks that maybe on Monday they will let him out of bed and start walking a little bit.  He is still having a lot of trouble breathing and started running a fever on Friday so has not been feeling really well but is excited about being able to get up and move around.  So he thinks.  Wait till he gets up and feels all the other parts of his body that hurt.

Other than that he is doing okay.  Dave, mom said no racing EVER for Adam.

Thanks again everyone for the prayers and get well wishes.

Hmmm.  I wonder if it varies, company-to-company - but I know at Motorola they gave me 60 days to enact my COBRA policy.

I sent something to Adam at this address today.  I hope it makes it there.
Amy?  How are the rest of you Fehrmans holding up?  I'd bet Bill isn't quite his usual composed self when it's HIS OWN SON involved.  Tell Dad, sis & bro that I have you all in my thoughts.

K3 it is not dad the one that you have to worry about, it is mom.  She has been up there from 8 in the morning till she has to go to work and then back the next morning.  I think she lived up there this weekend.  Michelle, Dad, and I will be at Topeka this weekend.

Adam is doing better.  They have him up and walking finally.  Worried about the lungs as there is fluid.  Going to do a CT scan this morning and if there is more fluid they are going to do a thoracotomy.  Hopefully it won't come to that but we will wait and see.

Thank you for sending him a card K3.  And that you all for your prayers.  It really helps him out.  I have been printing him the updates and he at least crakcks a smile now and again.

He is having a rough time right now dealing with all of this and he is afraid that he is not going to get better, which we all know he will, but he has been a little down lately, but hopefully with him moving around now he will get better sooner.

See you all in Topeka.

Ah, the impatience of youth.  How long has he been injured now, ten days?  Tell him that he'll get better, but only if he's not cranky!
In fourty years, I've never (knock wood) been hurt as badly as Adam is now.  But he has youth on his side, so he'll be all right.  Buy your mom a drink, and see if the doctors can give you a sleeping pill to disolve into it!
Please let me know if that package arrives.

Update ******** they are going to take Adam to surgery tomorrow morning to drain the blood out of his abdomen before he gets an infection and things get worse.  Please pray for him so that surgery goes well.

Also, he has switched rooms so the new address to send things to would be:

St. Elizabeth Hospital
C/O Adam Fehrman - Room:  420-2
1506 S. Oneida Street
Appleton WI  54915

If you have sent him something to the previous address it will just get brought to his new room.

Thanks again everyone.

Amy

Hey everyone.  Adam has a rough couple days and for those of you who were not at Topeka he is back up in ICU and on a respirator, but they are hoping to take the respirator out tomorrow or Wednesday.

Mom talked with the financial people at the hospital and they have been receving tons of e-mail a day from the doctors and staff as to Adam's condition and what they can do to help him with the medical bills.  Therefore, they have decided that he will not be responsible for the medical bills.  What is not picked up from Medicaid (thank you for mentioning that to us Craig) they doctors will be writing off.  Therefore, Adam will not have to worry about paying for the bill.  Now with that concern out of the way he needs to get back into the mindset that he will recover.

Thanks again to everyone who has sent cards and gifts.  It has kept his room looking like a home rather than a hospital room.  Now we just need to give him the encouragement that he is going to make it through this with flying colors and hopefully he will be home in no time.

Our family thanks each and everyone of you for the care and concern.  It has given us encouragement and I am sure it has helped Adam tremendously.  Thank you all once again.

Amy
