You probably can't go wrong with Ohlins, Scotts, or Hyperpro. There is also Matris, Arrow, Sprint, and others which should be ok.

I personally use Ohlins on the race bike and the street bike. There have been arguments about the rotary dampers vs rod style dampers, but people on both sides of the camps like what they use and I haven't heard of problems with either.

Just watch some of the older Hyperpros if you go used. They had a seal issue a couple of years ago that would allow the fluid to leak out. They acknowledged the problem and I think they took care of everyone who complained. Don't know of any issues with the newer Hyperpros or any other manufacturers I listed.

I have heard the same thing about the Hyperpro leaking...it happened to a buddy of mine.

I use the Scotts on my bikes....I love it...and like the easy changing function.  After all, Scotts is made by Ohlins...so any Ohlins would be good. ;D

Hello, I've got the Scotts and couldn't be happier. In addition to the full range of adj. the interchangablity (plops right onto my '98 VFR8Fi) and back in less than 5 minutes. As for the durability of it, well I put the RR down in T4 (I think) at Summit last weekend and it survived perfectly. For the price, background (Ohlins), convenience and performance, I LOVE the Scotts', but of course this is just my opinion.

I use an Arrow, it works excellent, survived two crashes.  It is fairly expensive but works great.

I am, in addition to most of my instructors, using the Hyperpro dampeners, and shocks and springs for that matter.

No leaks.  I heard the same thing myself, so we've had a watchful eye out for it.

The shock is great.

QuoteHello, I've got the Scotts and couldn't be happier.

I'll put a third vote in for the Scotts.
LOVE IT! Works flawlessly, rebuildable, (did I mention looks awesome!) and it survives wicked crashes! I've had mine for about 4 years and I don't have one complaint. From installation to use it's the best!

I have used GPR, Street & Comp, and Ohlins.  The ohlins was the most expensive, but the only one that I liked.  I have ridden a couple of bikes with the new Hyperpro as well.  They seemed pretty nice too.

only problem with Hyperpro is that they are nearly impossible to rebuild!  At least that is the case with the ones that mount in the stock location on GSXR1000's!  Go with Ohlins!

GPR all the way.  It's what we use on all of our 600rr racebikes,  and have had nothing but good things to say about them.

Scott's...

I have transferred one from my 01' GSXR 750 to my 03' RR to my 03' R6...Bracket change only...It has survived at least 6 crashes with NO probs.  Can't say that about the "rod" style ones I used to use...They would bend on time or another...

How about this novel concept...

For most of 2003, I had no steering damper.

I work with http://4and6.com with their GMD Comptrack system and http://www.hyperprousa.com to get my bike to handle really, really well.  I'm older and I've been doing this for a while, so I like my bike to be really easy to ride.  Honestly, I really don't want to expend any effort.

I added the damper in the middle of last year as a precaution.  And I don't run it very tight at all anyway since it handles well.

Are the expensive dampers really any better than just a cheap daytona damper? I have always run a cheap one since they are adjustable as well, wondered myself what difference a $400 damper would make.

Now that's a good question....

Some dampers have variable dampening, which is nice.

The top mount dampers are more expensive because of the bracketry that is required.

For years, though, we used the really inexpensive NHK dampers that actually came stock on Kawasaki triples.  They didn't have the long travel like some, but they were reliable.

The rotary dampers are nice.  I've used the Works Enduro Rider dampers on a couple bikes.  They mount below the triple clamp and a pretty much in a place where they will never get destroyed.
