I do believe you guys are right on the money, regarding Miguel Pena at Moroso on Memorial Day. After we check out his experience a little further. I think the next time you see him, he'll have white plates (same number)!
HD
It sure was neat to watch him through the turn.. or 2.. that we on track were able to see him ;D. Very smooth rider and fast. Very nice guy too considering he has "THE AXE" on the back of his leathers.
HD. Any news on Darrin Mulvaneys foot condition. He seemed in good spirits but was not sure if he broke anything. :'(
Melkman, you are right Pena is a really fast rider and a very nice guy. We have not seen him in a few years. Frankly I did not know he was entered (post) until after he was in several races. I probably would have let him start back as an amateur if I had known. And watched his results to determine whether to move him to expert. We have now seen his results and he will be moving.
I spoke to Darren Mulvaney last night. He has some broken bones in his foot and is going to an orthopedic doctor today. He blew the start and was trying a little to hard to make up for it too soon! He will be fine. We had a few other injuries but all will be fine.
HD
Henry, how is Gino? I saw Tony there later in the day and he said he just had his bell rung.
He is fine. I spoke to him last night.
HD
I talked to Gino yesterday. He's doing well, just got a nasty concussion. He didn't remember much after the first lap. He has video on his bike and saw that he was taken out in the chicane by a rider that overshot it and hit him when he turned in. He wasn't sure who it was, but did say the guy tried to apologize near his pits to the people around there I guess. He said he will probably miss the next round cuz of work but then be back for the following one.
Glad to hear the riders noted above are banged up but will be ok considering..I know Darrin was looking forward to many championships this year and will have a hard time now to retake points leads.
The chicanes may contribute to some lower speed crashes, but personally I believe it is better than constant very high speeds all around the track that could contribute to a more horrific crash. It also appears to makes for better racing giving lower hp bikes at least a fighting chance with braking manouvers.. :)
I like the chicanes too...not sure why everybody complains about 'em. It helps to make all three of our Florida tracks different. Homestead, high speed corner entries from the straights...Moroso, point and shoot with heavy braking areas, and Jennings, free flowing pure corner speed track with very little braking. Makes for a good mix if you ask me. :)
That is a good observation MD, but Moroso really chews up my front tire (no way could the reason be that I weigh an eight of a ton ;D)
cherry picking is lame. give someone else a chance!

eighth of a ton.. holy moly :-X
I'm only a 10th of a ton. ;D
First of all, I'm glad everyone is alright from this past weekend. Get better quick guys.
Now for Greg......

Did you ever see the orginal moroso? It was great without the bus stops. I had the privilege of growing up at Moroso watching the races and only remember one incident on the "fast" part of the track. There were only a hand full of riders that could hold it open going threw the esse's. It was awesome!! Anyways, I don't think speed doesn't contributes to accidents, we do (rider error). I know two #79's that have raced there, one won't do it anymore because of the bus stops and the other is promoter of it. HD, do you think speed is a factor of crashes, or is it rider error? I'm not saying you're wrong greg or I'm right. I just think it would more safer without them.
You might be right. I went and watched there way back in the late 80's a couple times when we lived in West Palm. I remember Rick winning basically every race all day long...lol. Unfortunately, I never got to ride the track before the chicanes, so I can't give a valid opinion on the differences. I just like every track cuz I'm so new still. :D I bet that track would be a lot of fun trying to stay WFO through the esses where the chicane is now! Do the car guys still use the lod layout (aside from the newest chicane due to the extended drag wall)?
Rick is one of the #79 riders...
Trivia question..... Who was the other #79 that used to win there?
Was Henry #79?

Brian- Good points. no, i did not have the opportunity to see races there pre-chicanes. Im sure it was awesome to watch from a spectator point of view. It appears most riders feel that it was better before as well. I have only raced 5 times and only been to 1 (Daytona 02) live race. It appears this is going to be the trend however with Road Atlanta doing the same this year to slow the speeds. Is rider saftey the issue with these chicanes? That is what i understand from others. Does it make it safer? im hardly qualified to say.
H.D. of course and he owned the place. I raced at the old Moroso for nearly ten years. I liked the old track but don't dislike the new track. we do have to slow them down cause if we didnt the speeds down the front straight would be outrageous ( probably run 1:15s in shoot out). Love t3&4 so-so on 5&6 front straight chicane could be a little more flowing.
Just my 2 cents.by the way shootouts in 1980's the most exciting ever at Moroso
this thread is now officially "MOROSO.. OLD VS. NEW".. ;D
good point James. Like MD pointed out, we have fast flowing at Jennings. The new moroso adds a technical aspect i now look forward to practicing. Slowing way down with multiple downshifts..i can see BShaws view however about preserving history and how the riders who have been around would view it. I never realized Henry D. was such a BAD ASS!!
BS. any news on the wisps of smoke??
The way I hear it, Henry was the man. Anybody brave enough to race a TZ750 is cool in my book. ;D I still gotta get On Any Sunday 2 so I can see him fall off in the chicane at Daytona...DOH!
You coulda seen it in the opening for ABC's Wide world of sports I beleive. Mighty Duck you might be too young for that LOL
You mean the one with the guy tumbling off the ski jump? I loved that show! I just don't remember the motorcycle part...hmm. I bet I have an old video tape of something from that, just wouldn't know where to look. MAN, Henry's old!!! ;D ;D ;D
Those were the days, 2 TZ750's dukeing it out and several Eddie Lawson Kz 1000's (the factory kitted superbike models) H D R. Shaw, D Chauncey, J Ashmeade, E Kickliter, boy was it fun to watch!!
Hey Greg great riding Mon. I was w/ you for a while in MWSS till minor F---up! crashing sucks! looking for new forks Senior Pena on my arse in T 11 pushed too hard .....ooops!
oooops sorry Henry

James,
Thanks, Pena is fast. the fastest that ive raced with in a AM class this year for sure. Did you ever ride with him "way back?" How friggin old are you man? im 35 and thought i was kinda old getting into this but is is sooo much easier on the bod than motoxing was. David White has front end he was considering selling. Did you talk with him..
39 is the age and it is easier on the bod if you dont take a tumble (felt fine Mon. nite Tues morn. but was hit hard about noon.) Man am I sore. I can still do the same things I did when I was 18 just not as often. Yes David gave me his # but did not sound too sure at time or maybe I was groggy LOL.
Yes I was thinking of selling the front end and will as soon as I get the 03 R6. Sure as excrement I would need it if I sold it before I get my new bike. Will know in a few days if I have a sponsorship deal on one.
Dave

Dave, i promise to flush from now on. :-X

the thread has officially gone to hell. ;D
Miguel Pena has been notified, that he is now an expert. He agreed and was a gentleman about it. I expect he will be a fine expert class rider in our series.

How good was he? some of the guys i have met in CCS remembered him as blazingly fast. Then there was mention of a national championship of Mexico or something. Was/is he that good??
All I know at this point is that he raced with us a few years ago and earned enough points to move to expert. But he did not return to the series until now. Regardless of anything else, he is now an expert. Ask him at the next race. He speaks pretty good english ;D.

there are a bunch of penta's out there.you cant say he is cherrypicking.I see alot of yellow plate riders out there this year that still remain as yellow plate riders. what gives?

Yellow plates that ran all last year and that are winning races this year? dont see any problem with staying am. if you having a good time BUT not winning everyting..thats why there is an am class right?
My friend pointed out and i agree, having Miguel out there was not a problem. Pena is a nice guy and hey, he hasnt raced in quite some time. Nobody that i know of was angry or whining that he should have been Ex that 1st day back. Hell, i got a kick outa having a lead only to have him come by through turn 2 twice in 2 races..Was a little anctious about having a fast guy ride with us. My friend Dave got me all syked out cause he knew him as "the AXE" from a few years back.
he is a nice guy,I have had no problems with him on the track. He has not been racing for two years now.I just dont see the big deal about him coming back as a yellow plate rider. :-/
It really is not a "big deal". If he had asked to race amateur I would have ok'd it. And told him we would see how he did. This sort of thing happens often and we either leave them amateur or if their good enough, move them to expert where they belong.

Thank you Duane (nine lives) # 59, I know you didnt have any problems with him as a amature. you raced against him with 150 more cc's. Glad you could show up and start some excrement!
Dave
