Title: Why does VP fuel smell like it does?
Post by: EX#996 on May 27, 2003, 07:03:20 PM
I like the smell of fuel, but there is something in the VP fuel that makes me sick to my stomach.  What's different about it?

Dawn, you know you're not supposed to be sniffing fuel. You wear it behind your ears so your man can sniff it.  ;) :D ;D
Honestly? You're probably chemical sensitive, so just don't go putting your nose in the fuel. Bad things can happen.

I run Nitromethane in my 600. Got to love the smell of that! Right, Dawn?

Nitromethane will not mix with gasoline in its regular state.  I have a nitromethane product that you can use, if you want.  Under the current rules, it is not legal, but neither is pump gas.

As for VP fuel...There are lots of leaded, oxygenated fuels out there.  But some of the chemicals are different between them, and sometimes a fragrance may be added for a signature "scent".

As for sniffing fuel, one shouldn't do it much.  Honestly, you really don't know what's in it.

OK let me clarify something here....  I don't intentially stick my nose in a gas can and take a good wiff.....  (well OK maybe one time  ;))

But, when you a filling your car or your bike, you cannot help but smell the fumes.  At RA last year Arclight Suzuki uses that fuel (or was it Nutec?) and at MAM on Friday when everyone was set up the the team challenge, the fumes were so overwhelming to me that I couldn't watch the races.

They are overwhelming, yes, and not really good for you.

Similar in manufacturer?  I'm sure someone will flame me, but VP MR9 is Nutec Special 4 or 5 just rebadged and has a higher cost.  Let me rephrase that...an outrageous cost.

Is it worth it?  Well, I do know of a shop that dyno-ed it against Power Mist T102 and the HP curve was the same until the end...the place you spend only a little time in the Rev range.  T102 is a simple leaded non-oxygenated fuel.  Your results may vary.  If you're using a dynojet dyno, they will really vary.  If what your dyno operator sells is different than what you're bringing, it might vary a lot.

Oops, going on a little rant...

both the vp and nutec smell bad (if they're the same, i know why).  i was gridded behind a kid on an sv who was using nutec at a track day, it was making me ill (we grid closer, since it's not racing and you leave single file).

all i know is the cheap crap i buy a few exits before the track burns pretty good.

Me too. I stop at gas station, fill up the truck, pit bike and race bike from the same pump. ;D
