Title: What racers do for a living?

I'm just curious as to what all you motorcycle racers out there do for a living.  
I'm in technology sales with a small company (about 25 people)

Design Engineer for a cutom manufacturing company.  We are a tier 1 supplier to Harley Davidson so I get to design all sorts of Genuine Harley-Davidson Parts and Accessories.  The cool part is that my company purchased a V-Rod and a Ultra Classic for me to do "Market Research".  I love my job (most of the time)!  When I am not designing H-D parts, I work with medical products, military applications, fire fighting products, commercial products, agricultural companies, etc.

Graphics Dept. Mgr. for a software/internet company.  I do all of their visual communications... both web and print... I do some moonlighting with that as well.  Me and two friends also own a track day business on the side.  I need more time to ride dirt bikes!  :D

I work part time selling open and enclosed trailers in addition to installing hitches and brake controllers...

Visionsports, Inc is my hole for loosing my money...  That's Visionsports Riding Schools there.  Also, my racing program and my Power Mist Racing Fuel distribution.  With the racing fuel sales, I work confidentially with racers in anything from hill climb Harley's to Porsche road race cars, from low compression old tractors doing pulling to Busch NASCAR's.

I implement the bad systems that businesses buy, fix the bad business practices that are done "because that's how we've always done it", and endeavor to make sure my clients get the most horsepower for their consulting nickel :)

I'm basically accounts payable for an insurance company. I audit and approve disbursement requests and am the administrator for our travel reimbursement system.  I've only had one accounting class in my life.   ;D

My degree is slanted toward management & marketing.  I'm on the job hunt as we speak...

Teach undergrad and grad level accounting & finance sometimes at night...

Also own my own business to fill in the other open time...

I am racing for the fun of the sport, but also so I can find a personal outlet for learning more about the internal combustion engines and chassis systems

Maybe one day I'll be Professor Wyatt.  Make that Professor Monsta.  ;D

It seems like there's at least a small handful of self-employed people here.  Seems that's probably the best way to go racing, eh?

Myself... I'm an overworked/underpaid serf with Motorola, doing cell system upgrades for SprintPCS, Verizon and Alltel systems.  I hate every minute of it and am currently in some heavy discussion with a buddy of mine (who owns a car performance shop) and my dad about finding a building to split so I can get off on my own selling small electronic parts (TRE kits for Suzukis, O2 sensor and skip-shift eliminators for GMs, etc) and dyno tuning services.

Hello all, I myself manage a industrial maintenance department. On the side i do custom powder coating so if anyone is looking for some quality paint and most of the time same day turn around send me a e-mail or talk to me at the track. I do give racer discounts. And for those of you that crash and brake your parts i can make anything you can posilbly think of and repair anything you can posibly brake. We have a complete fab shop with cnc, laser, press brakes and a very large powder coat booth. If i can lend a hand to any welfare racers like myself feel free to contact me. THRDRCR@aol.com

I play with electricity, 120 volts - 34,000 volts.  I am a overhead electrician (Lineman) for Com Ed.  As long as I come home alive every night, the risk of racing doesn't seem so bad to my wife!  ;D

     Tool & Die Maker of 15 years with the same company (we build Dies, stamp lots of different products, and do some assembly).
     My personal experiences are in building stamping dies, trouble shooting & problem solving of dies currently in production, welding (tig & mig), conventional EDM, wire EDM, industrial cutting laser, and manual & automated CMM's - all of which I've done programming, set-up, and operation of.

     I also regularly transfer funds to CCS for allowing me to be on the track with talented individuals who are clearly in a different dimension of speed than myself!

I don't post here much, but lurk daily and this thread caught my attention.  I was a paramedic for almost 11 years (still certified) and 2 years ago I got my nursing license and have been working in a Vegas ER since. I think the only reason I stay doing it is because of self scheduling, which allows me to do track days and race.  God knows the money's not worth it.

 :PI,m just a sheetmetal mechanic and welder mostly TIG.  I make a lot of weird things for the Army, Navy, and for cars, but it's usually from 1967 or older!

maintenance machinist for a commercial printer for the last 2 years. worked for a machine/maintence shop for the first 8 years of my "adult" life doing machining,cnc, fabrication,design and engineering, CAD. printing equipment ,installation,relocation and repair 24/7 for numerous customers in my area and around the midwest and eastern U.S. looking to get back into cnc and design/engineering. possibly my own shop. gotta get out of this d#*n industry, but it pays good.

Instrument electrician at the power plant in Springfield, IL.  I basically hook up everything so all the plant operator has to do is look at a screen and click a mouse button to control the plant.

hey! i used to live in New Berlin IL.! ( real small town of about 450 people, and boy did it suck...now i live up here in milwaukee(well, waukesha :-/) and it's so much better 8) ;D)   i used to drive by that power plant quite a bit... it's just about the tallest thing in Springfield, lol. ;D ;)

Unfortunatley, I'm in the motorcycle industry (technician). I'm feelin' you Dano, I was a Service mgr. before and I had lot's of money but I couldn't get off to race. Now since I don't  have a full time job, I have lot's of time but no money to race.

Owning motorcycles is as close to having kids as I'd like.  It takes up all your time & money, makes you happy and makes you sad.  Best of all you can throw them in the garage if they piss you off, or on Ebay if you're *really* mad.

Kids are way fun.  When you don't have them, you don't understand.  Having family member's kids over...it isn't the same.  I like to think of it as being Dr Frankenstein... :o

     It's kinda like that phrase "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence". I have thought about having a family in the past, but then I see all the guys that WERE in my current situation, that now have families that wish they didn't, and it convinces me not to travel down that path. More power to all of you that have families, for we truely live in a messed up time in history to raise kids!

You need to hang around some positive people sometime.  Every generation thinks that the world is going to hell in a handbasket, but life is what you make of it.

     Ooops, sorry about the pessimistic veiw here, not really for this board. Just have a bit of negativity in the life right now and not alot of positive. I will try and cheer it up a notch! :)

     I usually hide out somewhere in the back of the pits, so it would actually somewhat suprise me if you did see me (other than on the track). My heads not really in the game right now due to various situations outside of racing, so I haven't been that social at the track so far this year. I just go and do the classes I chose to run this year as a little stress relief and to try and create a little harmony between me and my bike (and also to stay in the points for the season). I haven't really been applying myself at all so far this year (consistently finishing last), but I think I will have things sorted out by mid-season or so and I should be back to my old self and get back up in the top 10 again.
