Is there any special way to calculate overall points? Because I added together all my points listed in the class points and it doesnt match my overall points number.

you have to come up with an average of your performance indexes from all the classes you EVER ran, that is a multiplier. Take your points that count toward the overall (not F40 classes, etc) and multiply the PI by those points.. THAT is your actual adjusted overall score.

That only applies to new points correct?  If it applied to all points a rider could go backwards?

you can go backward Lee.. if you were to run a class you never ran, and say DNF'd, that would be a very low performance index for THAT class. No big deal right? wrong.. that PI gets factored in with the other performance indexes of any other class you ever ran to give you the overall PI. It would not effect the other INDIVIDUAL classes, but you could actually LOOSE overall points ..

ohh dang that explains my situation. Crashed out of the lead of a race I hadnt ran yet this season and now my overall points suck. Kinda wish it was only applied to new points. Cant believe you can actually go backwards in points. bummer

I figured it could do that.  I think the net result is counterproductive.  Performance Index will in part dictate race entry.

the introduction of the PI system has to be applauded, but not sure it is helping as you say, the net result. I'm pretty sure they just wanted to keep average riders (those that finish mid pack) from entering a shit-load of races and getting a #1 plate. Well, if your go fast AND enter lots of races, you can secure a #1 plate. It has been a LONG TIME since I saw a good rider, win a #1 plate doing only 4 or 5 classes (and not enter a ton of races at the dp round at years end). Jim Pihoken did it about 5-6 years ago? it may have been further back than that .. but that has not happened since. I do remember an AM racer MY am year (2003) never win a race, always finishing mid pack, but he did 10+ races a weekend and won the am championship..

Furthermore, the PI keeps an average rider from just hitting every round and taking a class championship with mid pack finishes. A top rider, could do fewer rounds, and still win a class championship.

Anyway, if you can win lots of races, you still have a good shot at a #1 plate. It may keep someone in the hunt for a #1 plate from entering a class they otherwise may not enter for fear of a poor finish (that single crappy PI would factor in to your OTHER perf. index average for overall points and could LOWER your total!) .. So, there are 2 sides, as would it be right to just enter a bunch of races for a class you didn't run all year just in an attempt to score more points?

One suggestion would be to only count say, 4 or 5 classes toward a #1 plate. But then, we have a situation we have in FL region.. a decent light weight rider, on very good equipment (maybe TOO good for some classes??) in a tie for the overall, with a rider that is competing in the always tough middle weight classes, and on a 600 in heavy wt classes.. Life will never be fair. So we just race :)

Thanks Greg, good answer; I'm concerned about the PI average drop from one crappy result.  I wasn't chasing points and still aren't but I'd like to be top 3.  Your criticism of a class is why I run more middleweight.  My results are much the same but that bad result is more likely with 30 nut jobs on the grid.  I assume this points system has taken years to evolve to where it is today.

Not sure about "years"  to evolve Lee.. we woke up one day and there it was :) Just kidding, actually it was implemented a few years ago as you see it today, it hasn't changed. What i can say is, as I am sure you surmised by now, is this..  the more races in a specific class you run, the less one bad finish hurts the performance index for that class. The more classes you run (say 7), the less one bad finish (say one weekend you do an extra 8th class) will affect the overall PI. But yea, i hear ya, it's a bunch of crazies out there in MW .. LOL !

No, class championships are figured by adding up points based on your individual finishes in that class, performance index doesn't factor into it at all.

yes, that is right. actual points make up individual classes, but a pi is derived for that class based on the finishes in that class. I misspoke about a pi for the individual races within a specific class.

On the first lap of HWSB at Homestead I was going to take you in turn 8 and then 10.................then we had to line up on the grid. :lmao:
