Title: number plate questions
Post by: blankwall on January 07, 2011, 02:23:15 PM
Ok so I just got a little confused looking at different pictres and reading the rulebook.

1) 5.3.4 Number plates, or number display areas, will be a minimum of 10 by 12
with radiused corners.

How strict is the radius corners part? I going to be spray painting mine on and am having trouble taping radius corners.

2)(1.) If the tail section profile does not allow the machine to comply with
Section 5.3.5.B, a single number display on the top of the tail section
may be installed and orientated to be read from the rear of the machine..
It is the rider's responsibility to have the number display correct before
coming to Tech Inspection.

What i have seen is that riders have two numbers on the sides of their bodywork and one on top of the tail. What this says is I can have it n top of the tail and none on the sides. Am I interpreting that correct? My sv has a small tail and it may just be easier to put it on top.

Thanks for your help just done wanna paint and have to re paint.

If you don't have enough room on the tail for the #'s to be displayed on both sides,
you may have just the one # on top of the tail and you MUST display your #'s on the sides of your bodywork high enough to be visible, preferrably near the knee.(upper most portion to the rear of the side panel.)

To answer your question, they are NOT very strict.  Probably half the bikes on the grids do not meet the numbers and or number plate rules.  Well maybe not half, but a lot of them sure don't.   I've seen all kinds of crazy stuff out there.  They did cut the little tips off my "ones" a few years back though!

Just remember, the cornerworkers and bridge need to be able to read your numbers. Really sucks when you are looking for a bike and have to try to read really small numbers when they are going by at speed. Gets worse when they are in a pack.

Noidly, I think they dumpped the side fairing numbers rule last year for those using single digit tail numbers (its still a good idea to do it even if its not in the rules)

You can outline it in whatever color you like.

Ok so i painted the bike and ordered the numbers. Now my question is it says read fro the rear. Does that mean like this

102

or like this
1
0
2

You can read either of those from the rear but dont want to get it wrong

Alright so I did 6" numbers on the back just like you said an have 8" numbers for the front plate. What do you think of the number plates and numbers? I could get 4" numbers and put them on the sides. What do you think

I run 5" on my tail, both sides, and have never had an issue, essentially the same bodywork back there.

I just re-read the rules, and it looks like the numbers only have to be on the front and the tail of the bike.  No side plate requirements.

Of course, it's entirely possible that I missed it!!!

If I remember correctly, when the rule change came out that allowed the single tail number 2(3?) years ago it also required numbers on the side of the fairing near the engine.

That side fairing requirement has since been dropped.

One on the front and one on the tail and you're good to go now.

Title: Where to get the yellow background
Post by: gskudlarick@gmail.com on July 19, 2011, 01:37:11 AM
Hi,
I'm doing my first race.  Where can you buy the yellow background for the numbers.  I live in chicago and they have an ordinance against spray paint.   :whine:

Hmm. do they sell them at the track.  What about numbers.  Do they sell them at the track.. Haa.

Pretty sure you can buy numbers at the track. If you find spray paint, make sure its close to school bus yellow. No neon or flourescent. I may still have a can of school bus yellow, but I'll have to dig through some boxes (we moved about 2 yrs ago and some stuff is still packed). I'll post back up here if I do (I cornerwork at bhf so I'll be there)
Title: how to re-tech
Post by: gskudlarick@gmail.com on July 20, 2011, 11:33:22 AM
If you don't have the numbers or something correct can you re-tech.  (first race).. e.g. can you go to local home depot/walmart or MC shop and try and get stuff.  How long do they give you to re-tech? (not like they have a HD next to BHF)

You will have to go thru Tech before your 1st on track session for the school. The Tech requirements are similar to CCS race requirements - but not quite as stringent. After you complete the school you will be able to get your race license and be assigned your race number. You will then have to re-tech yourbike to CCS race standards and your bike must be in ready to race condition (meeting all safety requirements and with your race number clearly displayed). If your bike doesn't pass CCS tech requirements you will be told to fix the things that didn't pass and come back to Tech and try again.  You will not be allowed on the track for practice sessions or races until your bike passes.

One thing to remember about your race numbers - what looks good to you with your bike sitting still from 5 or 10' away doesn't count. It needs to be clearly legible from 100' away with your bike moving at over 100mph. That's the true test of what's needed. Unfortunately, what looks really cool most times won't cut it.  It's more a case of the simpler the better.

I cant remember if you mentioned it or not but unfortunately, a lot of bikes produced in the last 3-5 years and most of the current MW bikes create a real challenge to display the number on the nose of your bike because of the cutout for air ducts.

The best part about all of this is that just about everyone in the paddock has had to deal with these same issues and is willing to help you find a solution that will work.

I should be working in Tech during the practice sessions at BHF this weekend. If you have any questions look me up and I'll be glad to help out any way I can.

thx for all the help..  I ordered some vinyl yellow backings and they just came in.  Hopefully they work.   Should be interesting.    Man.. didn't think it would take all week to get ready for this.  Some guy who said.
-- up till 4 a.m. prepping bike
  -- drive to track
--- race
-- drive back
- get home 4: am
-- to to work tired like a dawg. ..

was probably right.

Advantage to living 15 min from BHF.  But back when I ran cars, it made for looong weeks. 3 weeks away from home sometimes for races on the east coast if the schedule has a bunch of them right after eachother.
