OK, I'll start the thread.
WTF? Scooter racing? NO. ULWSM was formed as a way for people to get into racing REAL cheap with Ninja 250s and the like. I know the guy who proposed the class to Kevin Elliot, and that was one of his main points, IIRC.
So, what's the point of this scooter racing? Didn't they have a 4 lap race? I hope they paid $70 for that entry.
What a bunch of garbage. I can understand maybe scooter races at the Briggs and Stratton kart track at RA, but not scooters taking up our practice and race time. Ridiculous.
Yes! Ridiculous!
Why? It's niche crowd, it doesn't bring more specators, and paying licensed road racers loose valuable track time...that erodes the safety of club racing requiring racers to attempt to take more time off work, loosing money that they might use to pay for expensive entries, or just remain in the sport for a bit longer than otherwise.
Nate, did you get enough track time in your practice sessions? I got seven laps of practice on each day.
Never heard of it...doesn't go on down here.
QuoteNate, did you get enough track time in your practice sessions? I got seven laps of practice on each day.
So Nate got about 3 ;D ;D ;D
Oh man... Sorry Nate, that was wrong. I just couldn't resist... It just doomed me to crash though...
FWIW, that was my point when I wrote into RRW that the practice provided was a joke. 2 - 12 minute sessions isn't practice, it's an extended warm-up.
Practice is held on a "pay-for-play" basis on Fridays...
Back to the topic at hand, the scooters are funny to watch, but the lap times being like 5x that of any normal bike do tend to drag the races out. Plus, there's little action to it. 1 fast guy will run away and the rest will fall behind... I'd think a 2-3 lap race would suffice, or hold them at the end of the day...
I most certainly did not. I can understand with the late start on Saturday, but Sunday, 1 more session would have REALLY helped. The weather this weekend was NOT good, and I wanted more practice time. So, I was NONE too happy to see scooters out there on the practice time that MY entry fees paid for. WHY do scooters even need a practice? You could learn the course in a race. It's like going around BHF on a bicycle. It's not like they're hitting 120 and need to have an EXACT racing line. It would be one thing if it was JUST the race, although that still would bother me. But taking our practice time is another ballgame.
Jef4y -- :D It was wrong, but I still saw some humor in it. Made me chuckle. But, yes, yes you are now doomed to crash. Not a good move :P Just don't get hurt. Geez why are you fast ol' experts picking on the newbie racer? ;)
see, the b1tch of it is that even without the scooters, we'd still be stuck with 2 practices and then push to finish early...
too many classes, etc...
I enjoy racing, it would be nice if there were a second organization in the MW region that would ease the load on CCS...
Scooters, schmooters. They'll be back again this summer, won't they? I've got something to show the guy who backed into my bike while waiting to go out onto the hot pit. >:( I do a good enough job rashing my bodywork on my own - don't need any extra help!
To add some wood to this fire... >:(
We pitted next to some scooter guys - and they were absolute slobs. They didn't just leave behind regular garbage like soda cans, wrappers and old spark plugs...but they went as far as leaving a damn recliner chair complete with remote control. Right by turn 4/5 area if anyone else saw this. We cleaned up after them, everything except for the chair.
Nice. Real classy guys.
The absolute least we can do as a racing organization is to leave the track in as good or better condition than we found it.
Once again...scooter racing??????
QuoteOnce again...scooter racing??????
Yes,
Scooter racing....

muwhahahahahahahaaha....heheheheheheehehhe....hahahahahahahahahahaha...you gotta be fricking kidding me. Did these guys graduate from the lawnmower racing ranks...is it like a step up or something? Maybe you could have the lawnmowers too next time!
LOL!!!!
I have a few lawn mowers at home that could probably cut a better lap time than those scooters. We have a very steep ditch so I am really good at hanging off so I should be good in the corners. ;D
Dawn :)
PS Thanks for sharing the link on the 'other' board for the PD.
that looks fun...if i had a 12 pack in me and it was on the dirt! :D
FWIW, I heard that Ultra-Lightweight Sportsman was created to entice some of the AFM 250 production racers (mostly Ninja 250's) into racing with CCS. There's usually like 40 to 50 of 'em at any given AFM event. Just based on laptimes on the AFM's site, the front runners on those ratty little bike's would be running mid-pack with the 600's at more technical tracks like Sears Point. Dunno.
As far as I'm concerned more racing = good racing as long as it's on two wheels. So, go scooters!
I can't remember which magazine but they had a photo spread of Ben Bostrom racing someone on those 50cc Ducati scooters and it looked like a hoot!
Here's the scooter: http://www.motoworld.com/pg/se/bostrom/1.jhtml
QuoteLOL!!!!

No prob. ;)
From what I can tell this is purely a builders class. The guy with the "built" motor runs away from everyone...didn't they announce a new record for front straight speed at BHF...61 mph ::)
Next they will have pocket bike class and an XR50 class...
We do already, it's called the Wegman Benefit Fund pit bike race. ;D BTW, August 23rd BHF, be there or be square! ;)

Say what??? We can run our pit bikes on the track??? Any more info on this???
My pit bike has pedals, and only one FGP (fat-guy-power). Can I race? ;D
For the past 2 years, the Wegman Benefit fund has held the pitbike races on the day of the auction, following normal racing. The entry fee goes directly to the fund, and to be honest, it's been the most fun most guys have racing all year. You have to be a licensed rider to participate, and in previous years there have been 2 classes, LW (below 100ccs) and HW (up to 125ccs) Dave Doe and his cronies lay out a "Course" on the front straight. This is full contact, knee draggin', b@lls to the wall action. Not to be missed for sure. For more information on the fund go to //www.wegmanfund.org A good cause for sure!

Its total fun. ;D Did it for the last 2 yrs and crashed both times.
can i use my aprillia rs50 in this event???? go ahead give me a reason to keep it!! ;D ;D ;D

You forgot cheating
Yeah, Jim race from AFM got Kevin Elliot into the ULWSM idea. One of his points was cost, the other was giving the AFM P250 guys somewhere else to race.
wow! two whole pages over a few little scooters.... i cant believe they left a recliner there that's too freaking funny :D :D :D.... (at least they didnt leave a lamp too lol) ;D
so, out of curiosity, (and i dont think anyone has adressed this yet) does anyone know how much they did pay to race? ???

oh, and by the way, the svrider board sux! (just thought i would stick that in here ;))
I talked to a guy at the results board at Blackhawk. He was stoked! Seems he had just won his first trophy. He told me how he had spent the whole race stalking this guy, got in deep, almost tossed it, then got a better drive out of seven and drafted for the position at the flag. He was positively glowing as he told me about it. I asked which class, and he told me scooters!
Racers are racers. Leathers, helmet, gloves, boots, scooter, spares, performance work... These guys are more like us than we'd care to admit. We can teach them track manners. Why alienate them? Combine their race with Ultralights.
QuoteNever heard of it...doesn't go on down here.
I see a freak snowstorm in your future. After the blizzard melts, the World Scooter Championships will be held at whatever track you are racing at. :P

Now that's such a stylie little bike you should keep it just for looks. Yeah, Gordy would probably let you use it, but remember the full contact part. Things get pretty "friendly" out there. ;D
Rob, I think everyone has crashed during the pitbike race. Part of the fun. ;)

Extra, extra, read all about it...world scooter sno-cross finals to be held at Homestead-Miami Speedway this July! ;D
Wouldnt it be more interesting if they brought in the YSR's then scooter bike racing? Some of the guys that race theYSR's have 125 and 250 dirt bike motors in them and they realy fly.Last year when I took the LCR school there was a guy in there that had a 430 motor from a thumper dirt bike . Now that would be interesting to watch!!

I don't think people are as pissed about the TYPE of 'alternate activity' as they are about the fact that we are carrying the load of the costs associated with the event and we ultimately are the ones that recieve less track time because of these alternate activities. Whether it's scooters, Legend cars, or track ride sessions for non-racers on our race days, it all detracts from the overall track time provided to us and also causes a much more hectic schedule for the corner workers, race staff, and racers. Scooters should race on go-kart tracks in my opinion, which would still provide a stepping stone for those looking to advance to our racing but wouldn't be detracting from our track time.
From BMX bikes to off-shore racing boats, for the most part racers are racers, and all pretty much share similar excitement in what they do. I think what we are dealing with here is the fact that there is a time and place for everything, and during our race days is neither the time or place for the previously mentioned 'alternate activities'.
Seems CCS is ALWAYS trying to make a buck at our expence. First legend CARS (they have bike mototrs...so bike guys must like it) then the stupid useless scooters. What a bunch of Yahoos.
If ANYTHING, give them a one lap sprint race at the end of the day if there is time left...not the 3 hour endurance race 4 laps on one of these things becomes!!!
They are simply there because CCS wants more entry fees. CCS doesn't care about the quality or quantity of your track time...as long as they get more money.
This one I agree, that CCS is taking our money.
The Midwest region is by far one of the most profitable regions for any racing organizations, period.
Lots of riders, and we travel a bit. We still hold the record for the most entries at a road race, even over Daytona.
CCS does not spend a great deal money advertising CCS races because it is "sportsman racing"...racing for the racer. But then they sell our time to a scooter series to get more appeal?
I don't see that I will cross over in to this, nor do I see many that do.
I don't see any growth in the scooters even though it's been with us for about four years now? Anyone remember? Why does it continue?
Anyone send this link to Kenny Abbot to see why scooter racing is continuing year after year?
And Ebben...
You $uck, but I love you anyway...
Entry fees for ULWSM are the same as any other class. They're usually gridded with some of the other "slow" bikes like super sinlges or middleweight sportsman.
Thax Dave..and get some sleep!!Or were you just having a midnight snack at 3:30am?
Nah, I just woke up.
With two boys and the wife, sometimes it's the only time I can think and do some of the things I need to do. Actually, I just have a hard time getting things done. I just need more time all the time.

Burn out?
Been doing this too long, I think. As long as I can get a shower or someone will hose me off occasionally, I'm good.
