Title: How to tell if a used bike for sale is stolen or not?
Post by: Xpat2b on October 27, 2009, 08:18:03 PM
I think I found a vintage bike I want to buy from a private party (out of state) and want to make sure it is not stolen - what' the best way to do that?  I have the VIN...

Thanks

I had an experience of knowing a guy was trying to sell me a stolen bike, in fact he had several of them.  I saw them they were stolen, he even admitted that I shouldn't try to plate them.  I called the cops and said this is where the guy is what he looks like, and the make and model of his truck and trailer.  They replied that they couldn't respond, they couldn't give me any info.  I told them that I had written down the V.I.N. numbers of these bikes, but they said they couldn't give me any info.  I left a message for a detective, that was 3 years ago.  No phone call.  So cops dont give a shit, or any info on V.I.N.'s

  one for guns too.

I have a simple solution for that when I sell a gun or two from my collection. I make them meet me at a local gun shop I'm normally a customer at and have them fill out a background check. Dont want to go through a BG check, I aint selling you my firearm. Never had anyone refuse or get turned down from the BG.

Kathy- you got mail!

Looks ok, but hasn't been registered in a long time.  Good luck with the rebuild.  Those old Hawks are cool machines!

The lower the price, the more raceable it is.

Ya got a problem with people using large calibers? Hate to tell ya, its perfectly legal to hunt deer with it. I dont use it deer hunting anyways. a 38lb rifle is a PITA to lug around and ammo isnt cheap.

But I gotta tell ya about those "true sportsmans" from chicago area I deal with up here hunting. Its real sporting to see 6-7 "hunters"  from the greater chicago area unload their rifles on 1 sub 100lb nubber blowing both of its left legs off and basically swiss cheesing the poor deer.

How did this turn to guns? LOL  FWIW, my take on hunting is this- I like eating deer, but don't think I could kill one.  Is that jacked or what?  And given my profession, it's even more odd, because I think I could sleep well after shooting a crack head, but just not an animal.....because they are tasty (animals, not crack heads).

Hmmm....I need counseling, perhaps?  :ass:

Hows this for 'jacked'. I deer hunt but cant stand the taste of venison. Rest of the family loves it. If they didnt, I wouldnt bother going out.

Yeah Duc, it can make me go broke. Wasnt so bad when I was at orkin. Could afford having the ammo custom made for my specs ($9/rnd). Last time I took it out was march last year. Not many ranges like them nor have the room to use them to their fullest.

Back on topic, the last time I had a questionable bike, I called the DMV and they ran the vin over the phone and told me it had never been reported salvage or stolen.  No questions, free of charge...

thanks...yeah the problem I am having is that some states don't require titles on bikes over 10 years old. I found one who has the title but it's not in his name (prior owner signed over bike as payment for work in lieu of cash). So he's got to put the title in his name in order to sell the bike to me -  because in order to tag it my state requires a title or registration certification from the prior owner.  If it all works out it will be a great deal and I get to be 19 again!
