Title: Tire question
Post by: redracer75 on March 13, 2009, 11:44:38 AM
Hey guys. Im new to road racing and new to the forum. I just bought some Michelin PR3's online and the date on the tire is two years old. I'm just wondering how long a tire can sit before it starts to deteriorate or harden. Do I have to worry about them not being at the top of their performance if they've been sitting in a wearhouse for two years? Any input would be great. Thanks!

From what I've heard it has alot to do with how they were stored. If it was a climate
controlled warehouse they should be ok.I would just take it easy on them your
first 4 or 5 laps and feel them out.Not sure if this is the deal you got from SBTG
but I have a few friends get this deal but haven't been to the track yet to try them
out.I believe they said the warehouse at SBTG is climate controlled. If these are the
ones there are probally the soft ones and should grip well but wear faster.Hope this
helps alittle.

Agreed.  If it's been in a real warehouse out of the sun and the climate has been reasonable, it will be fine.  As for putting just a few laps on it before going all out?  Well, I used PR3's for short sprint races, not for a long weekend of practices and solo endurance races.  Does depend upon the track, but it is a soft tire.  Don't forget, 22psi cold.

Thanks for the input. Yea they are PR3's from STG.com. The dates are from 4/07 for the rears and 2008 for the front PRC.

I wouldn't worry about the date codes at all.  I've burned down old H2's in practice recently from that we used and put in my done pile in 2004.

From what I have hear if the tires are new... You should be ok...

Now, if the tires are not new, I was recomemded against using older tires on the track.
