Title: Brand New Lap Time Tracking Website Is Now Live
Post by: Russell2566 on August 16, 2008, 11:47:15 AM
MyRacingBio.com (http://www.myracingbio.com)

MyRacingBio.com (http://www.myracingbio.com) has gone public; It's been a long couple of months of development, but I'm finally at a point where I can release Version 1. I have created a fairly large feature set that is available as of day one, however I have an even larger set of features in the works that will be turned on over the next few months.

As of day one I have all of the racing data that existed on Scott's lap time viewer up until and including May 5/6 weekends. I will be getting an updated backup soon to bring me fully up to date and at some point in the near future I will complete my coordination with CCS, resulting in all new race results being uploaded to MyRacingBio.com (http://www.myracingbio.com).

Some Day One Features

If you find any issues or have any comments please feel free to use the Contact Us Page (http://www.myracingbio.com/index.cfm?event=contactUs) and fill out the form accordingly. This will help me keep track of issues going forward in an organized manner. Being user friendly is extremely important to me; so if you have a suggestion or an idea of how to better word help text please don't be afraid to contact me.

Let me be the first to say thank you for such a time consuming undertaking.  I have not looked at the site yet, but am looking forward to doing some testing later this weekend.

I will be sure to report bugs to you if/when I find them.

FWI: I had a small bug in my sign-up confirmation process that resulted in the wrong confirmation number being emailed to the new user. I've manually confirmed the people who signed up before I fixed the bug and sorry for any inconvenience.

Ya sorry... HostMySite.com screwed up... Some wierd excuse about too many VPS Servers on one node or something.... They said they fixed it. It's a brand new hosting account so it's very untried.

I'm guessing I'll have a few growing pains getting things smoothed out. I would like to get the bigger hosting package but what I'm on is already expensive... We will see how the future goes and what is justifiable server wise...

And thanks for taking the time to do all of this work, now I can see exactly how slow I've been going compared to others since CCS added the transmitters. LOL  :thumb:
Title: New Feature Alert
Post by: Russell2566 on August 17, 2008, 10:00:53 PM
So I've been spending some time working out some bugs, although only a few users have actually run into much. Just so you know, when the website throws an error my cell phone gets a text message with the full details as well as it being logged to a database for review.

I do have a cool new feature that I released tonight at 10pm. The rider comparison is one of my favorite little pieces. For those who don't know, you can click on any rider in a race result and a new tab will appear on the page with per lap details. You can then go back to the results (any class) and click on up to 5 more riders. On that results tab you will now see all 6 riders side by side.

Tonight I've added some detail to the bottom of each of those results, including fastest lap, average lap and slowest lap. I'm tracking a few more items and even more data will soon be displayed on this page, but I was excited about this one.

If for some reason you don't see them and you've visited the site already, try clearing your browser's cache.

HostMySite.com has their head someplace dark and my node is down again.... idiots at the helm; I should be up momentarily despite the fact that the person on the phone won't just do what I tell him to do an restart the VPS node..... GRRRRR.

Between too many nodes on the physical server, running low on memory and an IP conflict I swear to god I feel like I'm dealing with a new hosting company...

Site is back up now..... grrrrrr....

Russell, great site. I'm not sure what type of hosting solution you need, but 1&1 (http://www.1and1.com) has been hosting the Spyder site and a few others we own for about 4 years now.

They can handle both Linux and MS hosting, and support a wide variety of scripting. Their prices are excellent as well. Give them a try if you can't get stuff sorted with your service.

I'm currently using HostMySite.com. The app is built in ColdFusion and Java with the MachII and ColdSpring frameworks. I'm currently running their lower end virtual private server package which is $120 a month. This basically gets me 512 of guaranteed physical memory, SQL Server "Light" and all the physical storage space I need..

MyRacingBio is a fairly serious application under the hood 100% oriented towards expanding greatly functionality wise. For 10 years I've been writing significant RIA applications meant for dedicated servers with heavy traffic loads. So being on such a restrictive server for me is a new thing... However if I can grow this application and at least break even in my ventures....

CCS is a starting point for the time being and will be a fantastic testing ground, my end point goal with this app was to blow away even the best dreams of myLaps.com. I don't do well with setting small goals :)

Signed up twice with different email addresses and never received a confirmation email. I waited for over an hour after the first attempt, I also checked to see if my mail server mistakenly tagged it as spam - not there either.

I want to see!  :banghead:

I have manually confirmed all users in the system that were not. My Mail server went down and it had been tagged as manual restart only. So while the mail should be in a queue and still go out, I'm not 100% sure and just overrode the system. Just go and log in with the email / password you used.

I think the sign-up process is one of the more complex pieces and will hopefully be more solid in the coming days.

For those not coming in through the normal authentication, please remember to go into your control panel and add a racing series affiliation. This is how I tie your user record to results from races...

Title: Re: Brand New Lap Time Tracking Website Is Now Live
Post by: Russell2566 on August 19, 2008, 04:58:14 PM
Was the whole site down? I had another short outage this afternoon that lasted about 15-20 minutes. I should have tested the server more before going live, but I was already weeks behind launch and errors have been due more to issues with the host than my code... I have a hand full of code updates to make tonight that will boost performance in general behind the scenes (less SQL load) and I will be making some tweaks to the server setups late tonight which may result in a few short outages while I re-kick instances to take on the new changes...

OK, the issue is fixed, I had a bit of a slip up it appears with the validation code. The last name validation was set to a min of 10 characters by mistake, which is why other people have been signing up just fine and no red flags on my end were thrown...

Issue is fixed, sorry for the delay...

I rolled out a fairly large update tonight fixing multiple bugs and nuances of the site. Overall things should be more stable and faster and the user experience should be better.

Visual updates will probably stop for a little while so I can focus on the finishing touches for the import tool for CCS to use. Vas Rajan also wrote me with some information regarding a new laptime tool coming out that will probably be popular from Westhold called LapCeiver allowing you to capture your own data. In the coming month or so you should have the ability to start uploading your own custom times to keep track of from a few limited source such as popular lap timers and LapCeiver...

Again, if anyone has feed back on the site, please feel free to use the contact us page to let me know. I am especially concered with usability and how difficult it is to find/use advanced features.

thanks
russ

Russ said earlier that he's having problems with the auto mail response.....

'So while the mail should be in a queue and still go out, I'm not 100% sure and just overrode the system. Just go and log in with the email / password you used.'

Not sure if you're having problems logging in beyond that, but I was able to log in and had never received the email confirmation either.

Version 1.1 has been release.

The new release includes a few minor tweaks based on user feedback. This includes usability changes for comparing riders.

The big news for this release however is the 100% completion of the results importation tool for CCS. I have written CCS with the hopes that this weekends race at BFR will be the first to officially go up.

I performed most of my tests with the results from BFR May 31/Jun 1 who's results were not previously posted on my site but now are.

Enjoy!

I'm seeing results listed as 0:1.367 instead of 0:1:22.02.

Is there a formatting option that  I missed somewhere?

I've gotton the 'loading please wait' forever a few times, and had to close and reopen every once and a while. I also get some weird results under 'results browser' and there are some stuff listed for 'my top 15 quick links' at tracks that I haven't been too or classes I have never raced in etc..

Looking good so far!
Title: Re: Brand New Lap Time Tracking Website Is Now Live
Post by: Russell2566 on August 25, 2008, 07:48:36 AM
@Hawl: Thanks I think I've got it all sorted out. I was doing a small portion of the math 2x. Once at import and then again on display. I just removed one step from the import math.

@LilJayRR, I will add a cancel button to that waiting page, until then hitting F5 or the refresh button will cancel you out just fine. I'm planning another update to the comparison page sometime in the next 3 days. Right now when you click a rider to compare laptimes, it gets the results each time you click a rider. which means if you add 5 riders in a row it does all that work 5 times.

I will be offloading this work to the results tab it's self, so it only does the work once, which will be after you click choose the riders, THEN click the results tab. This will remove about 5 unneeded HTTP calls for a single user per comparison... The current way made more sense when you automatically went to the results tab after adding each rider.

------------------------- UPDATE (8/26) -------------------------
I've updated the rider comparison code. You can now quickly add/remove riders to compare against and the results are not fetched until you click on the results tab. This change has created a significant performance boost.

I've also added a cancel button to the loading indicator allowing you to easily cancel out if anything does go sideways... Although it should happen less since I'm cutting out tons of erroneous requests to the server with the above change.

Russell,

First, let me again congratulate and thank you on a great contribution to the racing community!

Second, I was trying to Add an Association under my profile, but I couldn't add ASRA?  Are ASRA results/times available?

Thanks!
Title: Re: Brand New Lap Time Tracking Website Is Now Live
Post by: Russell2566 on September 08, 2008, 02:29:36 PM
The way CCS uploads it's times, there is not a difference between ASRA and CCS.

If you have 2 numbers, one for ASRA and one for CCS, then you would need to add 2 separate associations, one for each plate number (even if it's only an additional 'x').

If you have any issues, post back and I will look further into it immediately. Your post brings up a good point though, and I'll change "CCS" to "CCS / ASRA" in the system.

I don't have data past early season this year live. A few days ago I received a full backup from Scott who ran the old system. I'm preparing to do an upgrade to the next version tonight or tomorrow that will involved getting the missing data live.

Starting tomorrow CCS should also start uploading all their new data from this past weekend. I believe there were some hardware issues from the 2 previous weekends and there will not be any data as far as I know. This is however word of mouth I have not been told anything official from CCS.

Strange, I do not see them when I log in.  But I see  on the home page that VIR 9/20-21 was added recently.  Could that have to do with the fact that I only rode the practice sessions and ASRA, no CCS races?  Because I see none of the ASRA only events there, like HPT, BHF, RA, etc.

In regards to getting CCS to submit ASRA times, you can contact CCS and tell them you would like to see your times in MyRacingBio.com (http://www.myracingbio.com). Not to bring my side of the business into this, but running MyRacingBio is very expensive both with time and monetarily. While I have a small exchange setup for CCS races, I have to on my side consider covering costs and running a business. In short I'm not going to run after CCS to submit more times for free from a second racing organization. I also know that no organization will be willing to pay for something unless the riders want it, so speak up to them and you might get it. I'm modeling my service to be extremely cheap, so nothing I offer should be cost prohibitive.

  • It doesn't look like CCS submits times for ASRA unless it's a combined event, so basically by chance. It looks like this has always been the case. This might change for next year.
  • I have found your [Vas'] information in several races where you are listed in the results as first name = '---' and last name = 'Rajan Racing'. I will start working on a way to handle these cases; it will mostly likely involve a second affiliation with some sort of name override. I will hope to have a new version of the software public that will handle this within a few business days.

Russell, thanks for running that down.  I will contact CCS and ask them to submit the ASRA times as well - if anyone else here is interested in the same, please also contact CCS (I will probably send my email to Eric) so that they can hear from all of us.

Again, thanks much Russell!

Russell,

Maybe I haven't searched deep enough into your site......  but one of the features that I like from mylaps.com
is the ability to see running order lap by lap.   I like seeing how someone moved up thru a field as the race progresses.  Not sure if the data that comes from CCS would allow this to be done efficiently.

I know you said earlier that your intention was to offer more features than mylaps.com so I thought I'd pass it on.

Then again, maybe I'm the only one who like to see this feature......   anybody else out there??

Great to see what you've done with the data to this point!   :thumb:

I do have enough data to do this; I spent my whole drive home tonight thinking about the best way to impliment this and I think I've got it mostly hammered out. It might take me a handful of business days to work all the kinks out, but I'll try to work it into the next release.

I thought of this feature early on, but I wasn't sure if it was something people were going to want. I'm a feature whore, so me plus one 'customer' wanting something is enough motivation for me at this stage :) I'll update you when I've got it implemented.

Thanks
