Title: Topeka & Gateway
Post by: Ducati23 on August 07, 2008, 05:24:25 PM

Anyone read the fine print on the Topeka money races? They are not really going to have purses that large unless there is huge grids.  I wonder if the fast guys from Moto ST will walk away with whatever money they do pay out. Who wants to ride against Doug Polen in a money race?

Who's going to Gateway on the 16th & 17th?  I'd hate to be the only one there...

Big deal, what has he ever won?

Kidding!  I am really on the fence on this one.  I think it will be possible to win a few hundred at HPT, and the competion ought to be good.  I know Dan and Anthony will be in St. Louis, so I'd love to be there, but more time and money to get there and back.  HPT's cutoff is tomorrow, so I've got to decide soon.

From what I saw on the payout information they have it set up in 3 tiers - 20+ bikes, 16-19 bikes and 15 or less bikes.  Most of the classes are set up to payout to about 1/2 of the grid.  For Amateur riders this looks like a great program to me.

For the MW, UNL and Superbike races there may not be many of the MOTO-ST guys who will have bikes that will be competitive for those classes.

Yes, scroll down through the rules and you can see the payout per class by grid size.

It's great to have purses to race for. Kudos to HPT for putting this event on. I hope we get a good turnout of racers.

And don't forget about the grudge match drag races on Saturday night.

Hey PJ...

Unfortunately there's no way to get my SV out there ....It's our 1st time @ HPT - so I'm hoping we have enough room to bring out Wilson's SV - along with the ST bike and Helmbach's SV so the guys take advantage of the races on Saturday and get some more seat time -  just not sure if that will leave room for pit bikes...and the rest of the gear.

so once again I will be doing the long haul and wont be getting on track....the price I pay to help the team   :thumb:

but it sure does look like it will be a fun weekend - got any tips for us  ::)

UPDATE:  We have extended Pre-registration deadline for the Battletwin & Superbike Shootout until Tues. Aug. 12th as all grids are based on Qualifying NOT pre-registration order. This will allow for racers on the fence to determine if this opportunity fits their schedule. We will allow for day of event registration, 15.00 more per class.

You can download the form here: http://hpt.com//store/catalog/pdfs/HRRS_SUPERBIKE_SHOOTOUT.pdf

For those running in the GP region, our event schedule was designed NOT to adversely affect the CCS-GP races on Sun. @ Gateway as best we could so we put many activities on Sat. with a economical race practice on Fri. (85.00). Participation in our race should not preclude any racer from maintaining status, or improving position in the GP regional points series; it is possible to do "both" with a road trip down I-70.

Assuming a racer participates in practice on Fri., with a single race entry on Sat. He/she would have a full day of race practice (Fri.), 2 warm up sessions and a qualifier with a 10 lap supersprint race on Sat. and a chance to win $$$, both AM & EX for the price of a standard trackday.

Of course, as Nick identified, our event also provides a chance to literally rub elbows with many MOTO-ST pros, competing both on Sat. and Sun. An excellent opportunity to step up your level of competition with the professional racers of MOTO-ST.

As Paul stated, we have Motorcycle Grudge Match Drag Racing on Sat. night for 15.00 to resolve any long standing feuds/grudges or simply to gain bragging rights.

Additionally for spectators, friends and familiies we have multiple Vendors & Dealer Displays; BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse ) display; TSRBikeShow.com Bike Show benefitting LULAC; National Guard display w/ climbing wall, mechanical bull, M1Abrams Tank, Bradley Vehicle, Paladin howitzer; Calendar Girls (Women of Washburn Calendar) & one of our sponsor(s) benefit -> Hooters Girls (trophy girls)  and more.

Hope to see you at the races.

Regardless of how HPT spins this, scheduling a one off race that advertises to pay big money like no one else does at any other time well after the CCS GP schedule was announced is going to hurt the GP series.  It is located in the back yard of the majority of GP riders and on the same weekend as the GP series has to travel for most series riders a fair distance.

It does adversely affect the GP series. It would be stupid to pretend it doesn't. Many are going to go where the money is. Some will save the travel money. HPT is buying the grids with payouts. Probably wouldn't have nearly the effect if it was scheduled against one of the events at tracks much closer to HPT, say MAM or MPH, but at GIR it would be much more damaging. Knowing the bad blood that exists between one of the HPT people and Track Addix doesn't help to lend any credibilty to HPT's claims either.  I'll call it like I see it a cheap shot by HPT. No matter how you spin it there was 43 weekends that didn't conflict.

Clayton,

There is only 1 weekend out of 52 in a year that HPT is hosting MOTO-ST.  Not sure if you've ever been to a MOTO-ST race before, but MOTO-ST only runs 1 endurance race per weekend and that's on Sunday.  There is no MOTO-ST activity on Fri or Sat except for practice time and qualifying.

To me it's makes sense for both MOTO-ST and HPT to come up with something to fill that gap.  More exposure for MOTO-ST, more revenue for HPT.

I don't see this as a conflict with CCS at Gateway.  Race on Saturday at HPT, race on Sunday at Gateway.  It's about 4 hrs from HPT to Gateway.  The big attraction at Gateway is that it's a double points race date - which has to be a big consideration for those who race all the GP events.

As the majority of riders in the GP region come from NE, KS, OK, western Mo and Western IA, you're not talking about adding much additional travel expense to add a side trip to Topeka compared to what people were already expecting to pay to get to STL.  I don't know
what people are paying in the rest of the Midwest (or for Diesel), but in STL gas has dropped almost .50 a gallon in the last couple of weeks.  Still not where we were last summer, but closer.

Clayton, I think it's obvious what your real beef about HPT is, but if you choose not to race there, that's your choice.  Other people may choose to do both since HPT only races Sat and Gateway only races Sun.

Unfortunately, your post may not have the desired effect and actually hurt your cause as it may add to the registrations for HPT.  Some people who weren't aware of the possibility now know and are aware that they could reasonably do both.

If the grids are small at Gateway I think it might have more to do with the fact that this year it is not a combined event with the MW region.

Well, for me this has been a really agonizing decision, but I've decided to stay close to home and race at HPT.

Before anybody starts flaming, I've made this decision primarily because my wife is pregnant(10 weeks along-what a way to drop that news, huh?), and she has been struggling a bit.  I really feel selfish leaving to go racing at all, but I need an atittude adjustment in the worst way!  Anyway, HPT is only 2 hours from home, and I'll only be gone from mid-morning Friday until late afternoon Saturday which I feel much more comfortable with.  I hope my friends and competitors at St. Louis understand.  I am hoping things are better by the first of September and look forward to racing everybody at Hastings.  For those going to HPT-see you there and can't wait!

Take care of that new little racer.  You will be missed but Lord Help those folks at HPT.

Its all just a shame that it could not have been coordinated better to bring the entire Region together into one big event. I believe the CCS schedules were out in plenty of time to do that.   I see my local club MCRA (www.mcraracing.com) getting hurt the most as we will loose several of the trackday riders from the West and racers from practice on Saturday.

In the end people have to make the personal decisions on where to spend there time and money (especially in this economy) and I don't see folks spending lots of time and fuel ($'s) to run across the wonderful state of Missouri.

But for those that can make Gateway we have some wonderful safe events and a lot of fun.  The combined weekend with MCRA and TrackAddix is going to be a blast.  Look forward to seeing those that can make and choose to support there Regional Series.  But if you can't have fun at HPT and enjoy seeing those Big Twins rumble.

Hopefully next year we can see one big enormous event with everyone at the same track for a long weekend.  I think that combination of Regional Club Racers (multi-region), MOTO-ST, various evening events and growing sponsors would be fabulous for all involved.

PS.  BIG CONGRATS JACK, AJ looks forward to having another playmate (non pun intended).

From the rumors that I heard, (and take them as just that, this is pit-talk and you know where that gets ya), but rumor is that there WAS an effort by CCS and HPT to coordinate the entire region into the MOTO-ST race weekend at HPT, and that CCS was even behind moving the Gateway Race to HPT, but that there was a personality conflict that held the plans up so long that it became too little, too late.   I've said it before, and I'll say it again;  why can't we all just get along?

I will be at HPT, as I'm out of the points already and the difference in fuel costs is an extra set of tires.  Hope to see you guys at MAM and possibly Hastings #2!

I know that I'm conflicted.  I really want to see racing thrive in our region and having two events on the same weekend certainly is far from ideal.  At some point we're dividing the road racing pie into smaller pieces rather than enlarging the pie.  It certainly would have been great to have a combined event at HPT but here we are.  I'm not blaming anybody as changing schedules after the dates have been published can't be easy.  I know the folks at both Trackaddix and HPT pretty well and they all are passionate about racing.  Hopefully we'll see a well coordinated schedule next year.

That being said, I think that it's pretty exciting to have Moto ST in our backyard.  Having the likes of Gary Nixon and Jay Springsteen at Topeka is amazing.  I'll be in St Louis Sat and Sun.  And this weekend I expect to see every drain plug wired to tighten, not loosen!
