Title: RED FLAG FUND HAPPENINGS - 2008
Post by: Jeff on March 12, 2008, 12:18:35 PM
Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to share a couple of "Happenings" with the Red Flag Fund.  First off, thank you all so much for supporting us over our first year of "operation".  We were able to make a pretty large difference in a number of lives throughout the racing community.  We learned a lot and we have some bigger plans for 08 while still keeping "small" enough to remain manageable.

This year, we will again be hitting events from AMA, ASRA, CCS, CRA, WERA.  We're also going to try to get into an AHRMA event too.

This year, we will again have our fund swag for sale at most all events (shirts, hats, hoodies, patches, stickers, etc), and in regions that we don't hold a "Signature Event", we will be holding silent auctions or other events.

Speaking of signature events, we have 2 on the plate this year.

1.  GOLF OUTING - On Monday 06/09/08, the Monday after the Road America AMA event, we will be holding a golf outing at Quit Qui Oc golf club in Elkhart Lake.  It will be a shotgun event limited to 100 players including 18 holes of golf, with cart, par 3 "hole-in-one" challenges, door prizes, dinner and small auction.

2.  LIVE AUCTION - We will again hold a live auction, and are currently in talks with the new owners / management of Blackhawk Farms, to return the auction there.  As of today, I don't have the date for this.

We are always open to suggestions and can ALWAYS use your help with gathering support and donations.  One thing which we do ask people to keep in mind is that we all have lives outside of the fund.  We all work 40+ hours a week, have other commitments and families, so with that we do ask for your patience and understanding if we simply cannot manage something new.

Thanks for your time.

what about Road America. With Buell , again, having their Homecoming the weekend of CCS races. This year being the 25th Anniversary of Buell, may draw a lot of people.

It's still up for debate.  There are many people on both sides of the fence wanting either place for different reasons.

Donations
Coordination
Time

Actually arranging and pulling off a live auction is a hell of a lot more work than I ever thought it was (Gordy is laughing at this I'm sure. LOL).

The tough points in running 2 are:
Getting people to donate to 2 auctions
Coordinating 2 auctions with 2 tracks
Entering everything into the system for the paper trail
Maintaining our day jobs
Maintaining our families
Maintaining our sanity

Seriously, if we could do a live auction in every region, we'd do it.  But the reality is that unless we did this for a living we simply don't have the time/ability to pull it off.

We'll do something at Road A.  Maybe a small silent auction, I'm not sure yet.  But a large live auction takes months to prepare and carry out, and after that there's another 2 months of paperwork for the donors/etc.

I did two auctions a couple years and believe me it's a pain. I too had many offers of fund raisers but had to turn them down for the many reasons Jeff stated. I told people if they wanted to do a fund raiser it would be great but we could not be there to do it. They would have to handle it all and send us a check. That worked for many people, usually a club.

It sounds like Jeff is handling this well right now. More pressure and the burn out stage comes earlier. Let him do this at his pace and his time, he knows what he can handle. As he said they have their own lives to consider and the Fund is only supposed to be a part time gig. Which it isn't no matter how you try.

Good luck Jeff! Hope you have a great '08

which venue will have more people? I know sometimes more people doesn't equate to more money. However with Paul's ties at Buell and the amount of people that will be at R.A again being the 25th Anniversary, one would think that's the logical choice. Regardless, I'm sure it will succeed where ever it's held. I always manage to spend more than I should,
