Title: Question about the Speed channel.
Post by: Marsolais on January 02, 2008, 09:46:46 PM
How is the speed channel when it comes to showing the AMA road races. I know they don't start until march but I was wondering if they show all of the races. And do they show them live?

Very rarely live... I think Daytona was last year...

They're pretty good about showing all the rounds though... but if someone in NASCAR takes a shit in a porta potty, they usually cut away from the race to show that.

Oh that's going to piss me off.

Remember, NASCAR actually owns SPEED now.

But supposedly they are broadcasting some stuff in HD.  Not sure what....

Which brings me to this question... If they have HD cameras that they shoot the Moto GP races with, is it compatible with our broadcast system or is it something like PAL/NTSC?

To be honest, I'm really happy with the amount of coverage they give motorcycle racing.  I think they do a pretty good job... only thing I'd like to see more of is some interviews of the racers and maybe some background on them.

Speed channel is horrible. I usually stick my head in the sand until I can download any of the GP/WSBK stuff. Unfortunately, we're stuck with it for AMA.
Seriously, why no HD though? If any sport lends itself to HD, roadracing is surely one of them.

I don't have Eurosport with DirecTV
But I do have Speed in HD

and its awesome - the picture quality - not necessarily the programming selection
we all share the same bitches about how they treat m/c racing - so there's no sense in beating that dead horse

Once upon a time Speed had Two Wheel Tuesdays and it was nothing but motorcycle races all day long....I lived for it. Then Two Wheel Tuesdays became that abortion show with Greg White followed by lame Harley crap...although that Michelle chic was decent to gawk at. And now we are left with a show that does none of us any favors in the public eye, Superbikes.....I am waiting for some jackass legislator to take a hold of that show and use it as a public smear campaign against  motorcycles. Speed sucks...and I wish there was a better option. But there is some hope with the rise in popularity of motocross and one of the major has picked up the whole season of AMA Supercross this year, and maybe the pricks at AMA will use it to help promote roadracing better.

My rant
Thank you
Daniel

I'm gonna show my age here, but for those of you who want to rant, please continue.

HOWEVER:

I remember when the ONLY motorcycle racing we saw was 10 minutes of 'highlights' from the entire week on a show called Motoworld on ESPN, usually bumped by anything baseball related and mostly shown only at 2AM. Maybe.

Comparatively, we have a smörgåsbord of racing, so chill.  :ass:

BTW, I also walked to school when I was little.
Up hill.
Both ways.
In 3 feet of snow,
even in May.

Speed actually had some races live last year.  Mainly Supersport and Superbike.  FX and Superstock were compressed into the same hour, half for each.  Having four red flags like we had in Fontana last year does not bode well for live tv coverage.   Speed also tried to cover Mid-O live last year and got burnt big time by that one.

Like Alexa, I was there when ESPN started and we had motorsports coverage.  I remember having to watch Wide World of Sports to get a 20 min synopsis of the Monaco Grand Prix, which was the only F1 race we would get, until Long Beach started.

Yeah, Speed is not the best when compared to our Euro friends. When I was in Scotland, I was able to watch all the practice and qualifying, with pit lane interviews between sessions for the 125s, 250s and MotoGP bikes for whatever race was on at the time.  Think of what we have for NFL and NECKCAR coverage, that is what they have in the UK for motorcycle racing.

But its the only thing we have that we can watch on our LCD screens instead of a laptop.

There was talk of another channel coming along to take over some of the other racing, such as Vs. or something.  I think Vs even had supermoto racing on this last year.

Well, NASCAR makes money.  So, it's not just sucking dick, it's actually a business transaction.

I could have sworn when that happened that RRW had said it was NASCAR that had bought SPEED, apparently I was wrong.  :err:

Smorgasbord? Where? HAvent seen hydro plane, tunnel boat or offshore racing on there since Fox bought it. No pylon racing (airplane). Havent seen an Aus V8 challenge race on there in a lOOOOG time. Very few IMSA races if any. Outlaw races are scarce.

I've seen tons of V8 Austrailian Supercar stuff.

I don't have enough time to watch the motorcycle stuff that's on TV as it is.  Should be out riding anyway.

I think Speed is doing an great job of getting all the motorcycle racing out to us albeit it's not live but a lot of us TIVO it anyway. I like the fact that we get to see World Supersport and SBK along with the MotoGP and all of the AMA stuff. Also We get to see outdoor MX and Supercross mostly live along with Arenacross and Canadian MX. Did anyone catch the 3.5 hours of Supercross on TV Sunday night? That was awesome! So even though Speed does show a lot of car stuff besides NASCAR thedo show a LOT of racing period. I mean I got to watch club racing NASCAR the other day which was neat.

They covered the Moto St races, I have them all on tape. So there is some good on SPEED.
Yes I will date myself, MotoWorld with Dave Despain right? Taped all the episodes. I waited to watch it I even made the opening once, was riding in the beach in Daytona Bikeweek 1982. All my friends thought we were famous:)

I'll really show my age and go back to Carlsbad MX on Wide World of Sports shown almost two months later and don't remember any RR on tv. Speed is way better than the poker channel (ESPN)
