I have been riding the track for a while and want to get into racing. Up until know I have been riding an 02 GSXR750 but am considering switching to a SV650 for a racebike. My question is for a new racer (dc area so mid Atlantic) how are the classes that SVs can run? I mean people talk about 600s as the meatgrinder class....will riding an SV be the same? I have also heard that supertwins are typically older folks so a little more gentlemanly...any truth to that? I also have a big Vtwin that I could convert.
Also for the bigger guys......I am 6 foot something 200 and something will riding an SV be miserable for someone my size?

Great bike to start racing on.
Race parts are cheap and plentifully plus lots of guys have been running them for a long time so help getting it set up should not be a issue.
You can run it in all LW classes (gp, superbike, thunderbike,Sportbike,GTL and if class changes stay as posted ultra superbike also) so you should have no issues with getting enough racing in. I see your weight as not a issue! As I am the same size and been having a blast on a SV for the last four years. Now if you start getting faster and move up to expert, the bike is under powered against the 1000cc Ducs that now rule the LW classes. But you should be in good company starting out!

Welcome to the board.
I feel like the SV is THE bike to start racing on. Yeah, if you wanted to win the expert national champoinship in LWSS on the bike, you'd need tons of talent, and a loss of some height and weight might help. But it will still build you toward developing skills.
Additionally, the tire bill is less expensive than a 600, the parts are readily available for the bike in the pits, ebay, & dealer, and it's been a good, reliable bike.
Is it more gentlemanly? Supertwins? Yeah, a bit. At the front, it's still exciting. But less drama. Kind of like comparing Uma Thurman and Linday Lohan. Yeah, they are both hot, but one has less drama.

Isn't the SV in the Ultra LW categories now (2008)???
It's not a for sure thing as of today. As I understand it, CCS will issue a final decision on Friday or so.
