Pay me to do it? ;-)

Actually it depends on what you want to do.

1) For a simple site to post basic text and pictures only, most ISP's and broadband providers will give you a limited amount of website space and usually a small, easy to use web-based tool to post up the info for free as part of their service offering.

2) If you want a more complex site you can get some space from a web hositng company (Netgate is one for example), costs anywhere from $20 a month and up, depending on what type of access and features you need. At this point though you are totally responsible for creating and debugging all content, including scripts or other methods of dynamic content, such as databases interaction, search capabilities, etc.

Some will allow you to use web site design and creation tools like Front Page which are designed for newbies and those who don't expect much or want much control over the output. Some degree of understanding is required, but not much.

At this point it's like racing, the more you spend the more you get, AND the more you need to know to use the stuff you buy to it's fullest. You'll have a learning curve no matter what.

Tell us more about what you're trying to do and someone on the list may be able to help for free.

I want to have a site to list my race schedule, results, sponsor info and links, and a few pictures. Nothing to fancy. Thanks, Kevin

That's easy, get the SAM's teach yourself HTML book and enjoy it.  You won't need anything more than wordpad or notepad on your computer to create the files.  For hosting, you can go anywhere and get a free site pretty much, just look around.

Your son is right, you are weird but hey who cares what the kids think. When you get it up and running let me know and I will take a look at it and try not to laugh to hard at it.

Do a search on web hosting sites.  There a lots of them out there and many for less than half of the $20/month stated earlier.

There are a few freebie ones, but there's frequently a catch.  For instance, you might HAVE to use their "site creation tools" which will severely limit your creative expression and/or after a few months they may tell you that you have to join their "platinum service" (or whatever) and pay $XX to keep your site running.

Jack,

Can sliderphoto.com be a portal to web sites of racers in the MW, GP and GL regions.  It would drive a lot more people to your site, plus set up a link between the pictures you take and the local racers' bench racing reports.  I would pay you $10-20 a month for that kind of service.

I'm thinking every racer on your site can pick from a template of approved designs which match the theme of sliderphoto.com, kind of like a organizational resume book, with additional fun facts and pictures.

There could be one page everyone uses for schedule information to minimize web site storage space, as well as other space saving techniques that may be common to every racer.  If racers want to link to their own personal sites, like cbr600f4.com, then that could be another option.

Are you game?

Sean, that's exactly what I've been thinking about doing for a year now. I just never find the time to do everything. I'm already at this computer screen most of my awake hours. :)

The idea of having members that could have their own site/space, page(s), resume, sponsors, stats, photo albums, race reports, etc. Yeah, it would be cool.

What do you want me to do?

I can work on data questionares and formatting (not HTML skilled yet).  I know if we all work together, we can put together probably one of the most unique web sites in the world for racers of any caliber.

Thanks Sean! I appreciate the offer to pitch in and the excitement. Right now I'm working on infrastructure for the new site. I've been bouncing ideas off a few friends and I'd be interested in your thoughts. As the functionality progresses I could use your help and feedback. Thanks!

Jack:

If you need another guiney pig to test your site let me know.  I could test from work with a T-3 connection and virtually unlimited bandwidth and at home were I can only connect at 26400 bps.

Jack, if you need any ideas or help, feel free to ask me. I'm a Web developer for IBM and have MANY resources here... designers, HF, IAs, editors, you name it.

Super_KC - I can set one up & maintain it for you for a small fee over hosting fees... contact me.

Sean, Jack, you guys bring up the idea of giving racers their own 'space' or pages on Jack's site.. That's what we'd like to do on the newspaper site, but we don't get space for free so we can't dedicate space for each rider's photos, and all that stuff. So we're just doing like a "Riders' Profiles" section, that lists numbers and names, then links to their bios and 411 we got from them, and a link to the Racer's Web site (If applicable)

http://carolinabreeze.com/racers/

Jack, Sean, if you need help with forms, data, or anything let me know. I use XML for the entire site so it's easy to swap and move around data within the site and with other sites if needed.

Ahhh, now I see where carolinabreeze.com came from in my and Hanson's Web stats.  ;D Thanks Michael!

I've been a Windows developer since 2.0 and I've been working with .NET since early beta. Just need to find the time to work on my own stuff! :)

I had proposed similar ideas to CCS before, but didn't work out.

I can offer space, programming and other services to come up with a racer profile site to let each racer host their info, simple pages and photos. I actually built half of such a site before, I could finish with the programming and set it live and everyone can use it?
It was to be offered free with the site operator running some ads.

Jack,

I'm still interested in helping you out, I have just been busy trying to get some of my own racing business settled first.

Is there anything you need done in the next couple of weeks?

Thanks Sean! No, I still haven't found time to work on my site. I've got a few projects going right now but I'm close to finishing one up which might free up some time.

QuoteDawn, this sounds like a personal problem.

It's the price I pay for living in God's country.  (7.2 cable miles from the CO and several repeaters to go through to get there)  Plus I am too cheap to pay for internet access through the sattelite.
