Title: Summit Shenandoah Turn 1 Crash Sunday AM Practice
Post by: RC423 on August 27, 2007, 08:47:01 AM
Vadim Tsires Ex. # 479 had a pretty nasty crash in turn 1 in Sunday AM practice and was airlifted.

I just wanted to ask if anyone had any updates on his condition.

ps - This is not a thread to bring up safety conditions at Shenandoah so please keep those comments to yourself.  Thanks

vadim was taken to fairfax, where as of last night he was still in ICU.  he was unresponsive at the scene and momentarily regained consciousness, but started to struggle and had to be put under in order to be airlifted.  they believe/hope that he has no spinal injuries, but know for certain that he has broken bones in his neck.  his wife is with him at the hospital, as are his parents.  we will probably know more today.

all of the concern and offers to help from the riders and spectators were very much appreciated.

Our chapains have the contact information for his wife and were there at scene and will be following up with the family.  Our entire MARRC Crew is sending our best to the down rider.  Incidents like this are the hardest parts of our jobs.  Again...sending our best.

i'll pass along the well wishes to the family.  the update is that he responded correctly to the neurosurgeon when they temporarily took him off the sedation, and so his head trauma has been downgraded from severe to moderate.  however, nobody has talked to him yet, as they were not allowed in the room when he was taken off the sedation.  he seems to be moving around, and so they are still hopefull that there is no spinal cord damage.

mongo, i'm sure vadim appreciates the thoughts.  he is also a wera racer and has many friends in the wera paddock as well.

Thats a good point. Do you know if he's a MARRC member. If he is he would qualify for their Injured Members Fund.

not much has changed since yesterday.  vadim is going in for a full body MRI today.  he is still being heavily sedated and on a ventilator because he can't breathe on his own.  we may know more tonight.

i have put the family in touch with the people at the Red Flag Fund, who will be helping them.  jeff and alexa (and the rest of the RFF folks) are great people and are doing a great thing for injured racers.  if you want to help vadim directly, or injured racers in general, get in touch with jeff at the RFF and he'll explain how you can do it. jeff@redflagfund.org.  thanks again everybody.

i just got off the phone with yana, vadim's wife, who gave me some good news.  vadim has been unresponsive when they have been asking him to do things such as holding up X # of fingers, etc.  today they asked him in russian and he responded (with his fingers) to everything they asked!  it seems that his brain is not processing english at the moment.  the fact that he responded to russian is a good sign.

jeff kufalk at the red flag fund has spoken directly to yana and has arranged to have the RFF pay for the family's hotel stay down there, which is great.  if you can, please support the red flag fund.  i know i will.

yana is extremely touched by all the support and thanks everybody for their well wishes.

Great news.  That was more than I knew yesterday when I talked to Yana.

Glad we're here to provide support.  Again, we're just the middle-man on your money.  Things like this though (as many of you know) are incredibly expensive.  Hotels in the Fairfax, VA area are pretty pricey.

If anyone wishes to donate to the Red Flag Fund, we take:

Cash - in person
Checks/money orders - via mail (see www.redflagfund.org for address)
PayPal - paypal@redflagfund.org
MC/VIS/AMEX/DISC directly by calling 262-993-5416 or 262-894-8589

General Fund donations are tax deductable.

i spoke to yana briefly earlier but couldn't hear her too well from where i was.  she did say that the MRI results were good and that vadim is able to speak a little bit.  he seems to be making good progress but she's waiting to speak to the neurosurgeon to get a better idea of what they can expect in terms of the recovery from his head injury.  they know it's going to be a long road but i fully expect that vadim will be back to doing his ali g impersonation very soon.

DAYM- I have been away awhile - since my mistake of using SPEEDWERKS for my superbike this spring(lost the season) won't happen again- so I heard this while away from the sport temporarily(so to speak), but I gotta say running against him a couple years ago in lightweight classes @ summit point, I remember looking at the bashed appearing/junkyard ensemble of an  sv, the cheap rail trailor and the compact american oldy that got him there from his crib in Atlantic city,NJ, I was somewhat surprised with his modesty and 6 1st place plaques for the weekend- as i looked in later he he had done the same every weekend he raced that year and beyond- SAY HI TO JOHN CATMAN from North Jersey - I appreciate all the prayers for a world class club racing cherry picker that i, and noone that has competed against him,  could  be anything but appreciative of for his ability , modesty, competency! I and he kept up some emailing while he spent his winter in California, last year , I have been elsewhere waiting to have my sv suspended with  pertinent info mixed with promised competency  by ken@superbikeitalia.com and K3 - CATMAN

Hey guys, I don't know too many of you, I've been mainly a NESBA guy myself and haven't gotten too deep into racing.  I've been with Vadim's wife and mother most of the week and I can say that his progress is looking great.  Although he has yet to do his Ali G impersinations, he's smiling at good jokes, and has been giving thumbs up whenever you ask how he's doing.

The doctors say he's recovering well, but they're not about to start making promises of recovery times or anything.  The nurses do say they are impressed with is recovery though and are expecting good things.  They are hoping that during the weekend they can transfer him to a regular room.

I'm sending a laptop his way so he can watch a bunch of DVDs, however his mother says no motorcycles, so I guess it'll be Ali G straight for a week!

He seems to be in high spirits and has good friends and family with him. I will pass on everyone's cheers.

Hey, all, TheHiriser (Mike) and I just got back from visiting Vadim.

We squeaked in just before visiting hours ended; the very nice nurses let us stay almost an hour.

Vadim, Yana, and mom Tania all seem to be holding up well; the box of Russian chcolates that I brought put a big smile on everyone's faces!

Mike and Vadim had a nice conversation, during which Vadim was very engaged, smiling and  chuckling; Tania and I chatted and she let me practice speaking my broken Russian to her.

Yana mentioned Vadim was up and about with the assistance of a walker and the nurses today.

Vadim seems very clear-headed, and upbeat and positive. He thanks all of us at CCS, MARRC and his friends who are here pulling for him.

Mike threatened to kidnap and bring him out the track next weekend for Cyclefest.... I think Vadim might have been considering taking him up on it.... :ahhh:

Bobby, the best rejection I can give you is that you won't be able to stop by on Thursday.  The doctors are hoping to have his busted Russian ass carted home either tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest.

He's been eating his food like a good patient and has already asked when's the next time he can get on the track.  He's still enjoying a healthy dosage of pain pills, but he has been standing and getting in and out of chairs/bed a little too quickly according to the nurses.

They nurses have also commented on how amazed they are at the turnout for him with his abundance of visitors.  He seems to respond very well to everyone and has been cracking smiles and hasn't lost his sense of humor either.

Thank you again for keeping him in your hearts.

Hey, all, Mike and I swung by again tonight; he is definitely looking better, and his mom told us the same thing Ben mentioned, that the docs are expecting to discharge him by Wednesday. He appears to be feeling well enough to feel stir crazy (of course, who can blame him? Being bedridden SUX).

His mom was concerned that he isn't eating enough (there's a Russian woman for ya!) but we brought him some sweet Virginia white peaches, which his mom reports he ate in no time flat.

I told him he needs to, at first opportunity, get on here and drop us all a hello....

I would expect one by the end of the week.  :boink: :thumb:

I left Vadim a laptop which he immediately tried to get online with.  We couldn't get into the three secured networks the hospital had going.

Vadim got to see the pictures that Guzz sent to me.  He cracked a smile when he saw the picture of the lap before.  We both commented on how he looked like a pro and his mom loved them as well.  Kudos Guzz.  :thumb:  Then we set about studying the picture of his front end going out.  Vadim's eyes got pretty wide upon seeing it.  We sat and compared two pictures (one before, one during) and pointed out all the differences.  He even noticed the black stripe coming off his back tire being left on the pavement while he was going down(something I didn't see and I studied the picture for quite a while before-hand).

As Sarah reported he seems ready to split INOVA.  I'm hoping the laptop helps with the time going by.  I saved all the pages from both threads onto it so he can read everything you all have written.  Vadim is a great guy and it sucks to have gotten to know him under these circumstances but I am glad I met him nonetheless.

Keep on healing Vadim.   :thumb:

Thanks for keeping us up to date Ben. Been thinking about the Crazy Russian ever since I heard about this. It's good to hear he is heading home.

Hello everyone!  Sorry it took so long to get my slow azz to a PC with internet!
But either way, I don't have enough words to thank everyone who went out of their way to help me and my family through this.  The experience has been as humbling as it has been painful! ;)

So I was wondering, does anybody have any pictures/video from Shenandoah T1 from last weekend?  Mike & Sarah hooked me up with a pic from Guzz - pretty nice shot!  I think you can actually see my front plowing across the asphalt on it, right before I went KaBoom!  So, if anybody's got any images they wouldn't mind sharing, please send em over to vad776 at hotmail.com - I'm just trying to approach this as a riddle and trying to get all the info about my crash that I can.
THANKS!

Vadim, it's good  to hear from you. Bobby was giving me some updates about you when he could. I'm glad you are up and about and feeling good enough to post up about what happened.

Best of luck to you and my wife and I wish you a speedy recovery.

Vadim.....I don't have any other shots of you from that crash, but I have several good shots of you throughout the season. Send me your e-mail adress and I will put them together in the next few weeks and get them to you. Great to see you posting!
