Title: Question on number of laps completed (lapping)
Post by: DavidV on July 22, 2007, 10:23:22 AM
If you completed 15 laps, and someone else completed 14 laps in the same race........... Does that mean you lapped that person some where in the race?

Are there any exceptions to this (Besides crashing on the last lap)?
The results say I completed 15 and a bunch of others completed 14, but I honestly don't remember passing (lapping) many people?

What could have happened, is that they were lapped by the leader and you were not. So you got 15 laps with the leader and they got 14 laps because the race was then over.

So the order was something like this:

So the leader crossed the checkered (making it his 15th lap)
The lapper crossed the checkered (making it his 14th lap)
Then I crossed the checkered (making it my 15th lap)

??

Actually you would have finished your 14th lap just ahead of the leader finishing his 15th lap so you get to do one more while the riders finishing their 14th lap just behind the leader finishing his 15th get the checkers before they start their 15th lap.

you finishing 14th

checkers

leader finishing his 15th

someone finishing their 14th

OK, my bad, that wasn't very clear.

you finish your 14th lap
race still on you start your 15th lap

checkered flag
leader finishs his 15th lap
race over for everyone that crosses finish line after this

someone finishs their 14th lap
does not continue racing because race is over

you see checkered flag as you complete your 15th lap

Had the leader made one more pass (you) your race would have been done when you finished your 14th lap but since you finished your 14th lap without being lapped by the leader you did not see the checkered flag and are still racing to complete your 15 lap. Note: there could be any number of riders between you finishing your 14th lap and the leader ending race.

Hope that's a little clearer.

Basically it means you were about to be lapped next.

How?  There were  thirteen of us that completed the 15 laps. I was in eleventh place. The rest completed 14 laps. I'm really asking, not trying to be an ass

1st - 15 laps - lapped all riders that finished 14th position back...
2nd- 15 laps
3rd - 15 laps
4th - 15 laps
5th - 15 laps
6th - 15 laps
7th - 15 laps
8th - 15 laps
9th - 15 laps
10th - 15 laps
11th - 15 laps - your finish....only 2 riders behind you on lead lap...
12th - 15 laps
13th - 15 laps - tail end of lead lap - would be next to get lapped if leader went by....

14th - 14 laps - one lap down...along with rest of the field...
