Title: Worst crash I've seen...
Post by: tshort on July 09, 2007, 11:18:14 AM
Was yesterday out here in California at Thunderhill during AFM 750 production (superbike?) race.  Bike laying over blind crest, mid track was t-boned by another bike doing around 140.  I saw it from an observation tower, and the resulting fireball looking like a bomb going off.  Unreal.  Here's a pic of the front brakes from (or what's left of them) from the t-boner (oh, and the I guess the front wheel is in there, too):
(https://www.ccsforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.icsi.berkeley.edu%2F%7Enweaver%2Fround4%2Fpics%2F2.AFM_R4.jpg&hash=1f966de0156698517956f8e6046fe0563ecb59db)

No, I don't think it will buff out:

More pix here http://www.icsi.berkeley.edu/~nweaver/round4/

Amazing the rider, who did a full layout flip and landed on his head, apparently got out of it with a broken ankle, slight concussion, and torn shoulder muscle, from what people are saying.

I saw my worst crash this weekend too, A 250cc coming into turn 5 at RA full throttle, went to grap the brake and nothing! Full speed into the tire wall. Moved the tire wall about 15ft and he flew 25ft. head over heels. He looked pretty sore, I'm curious how he's doing. I think he was with celtic racing.

There was an ugly one in turn 8 at Summit on Saturday. Three guy's got together and finished up either in or on top of the tyre wall. We had all three ambulances out at the same time. Luckily two guy's walked away and the third guy, who was transported, finished up with concussion and a broken ankle I think.
Damn scary looking crash.

Stumpy,

I think that was the bike the crash truck dropped off at Tech.  The front caliper was dangling on the brake line, unattached.   No caliper bolts in place and no evidence of them shearing off.  I'm sure that was an 'OH Sh!t' moment when it came loose!

Duct tape and silicone aughta fix it.HeHe...

Probably forgot to safety wire some bolts. I doubt he will forget again. :)

Glad to know they will be all right

REMEMBER; Safety Wire EVERYTHING!!!  Period...

I saw the crash in T5 at RA.   That was probably the scarriest thing I have seen on the track.

Well... they all sound pretty bad. BUT, I gota tell you the worst one I've seen....well didnt really see it, actually experienced it. Details are a little sketchy at this point, altough I know I was at Summit Point at the time of occurence, it was Friday Jul. 6 2007 during the MARRC track day......the rest...maybe someone can fill in the blank. Cause after that I remember nothing. I've been told it was T7, T8, T9. I was told i was face down on the track while my bike did a little deer hunting in the woods. This is my first big crash, I must say pretty scary, considering I don't even remember going out on the track that time. I think it was the last MW session before lunch. Anyway, here i sit in front of the computer on Tues. with my broken foot propped up and what the doctor said will be post concussion symptoms, such as lightheaded, dizziness and blurred vision. Pardon any mispelled words, but anyone know anything about this? Probably not, I cant see anyone making it a point to spend theyre day in the carousel wacthing the MW practice day, but just in case anyone heard or saw anything, it would be appreciated! Hope everyone else had a safe weekend! I found out first hand hospitals are NOT a cool place to be during a race weekend!

I'd have to say the crash at Barber incolving Geoff May was pretty scary thing to see happen less than 50ft away... I thought he jumped Hack at first.

The AM crash at Barber that sent "Super" Ike flying had to be equally scary.  I know my buddy Corey ran over the guy on the grounds head about the time Ike took flight... he thought he killed the kid...

I think watching someone come down the hill to T5 at RA and seeing them not slow down would give me chills for a LOOOOOOOONG time...

Mike Jordan (Midwest Expert #32), his dad, and myself were all at Road America this last weekend. Mike's dad was 1 of the corner workers at Turn #5 all weekend, he saw the 'no brakes' crash in Turn #5 and told us about it later that day - scary stuff! At least the free standing movable tire walls were there instead of concrete!

I was working with the MARRC Crew that day and got to you at the same time as the medics. I talked to the flagger in 8, he saw the whole thing. he said you tried to save a wicked highside and got pitched over the front. The bike slide down the track a bit then hooked its self up again and went into the woods on the inside of turn 9.
I'm glad you are getting better. You were out for quite a while.

Thanks a bunch Simon, I was hoping someone was there to witness it, and I figured a cornerworker was my only hope. I just wanted a little closure on the wreck, whether personal error was the cause or purely bad luck. Just the fact that I was out for so long kinda scared me, and I have nothing but the aftermath to judge on what happened. At any rate, I appreciate any and all medical attention you and everyone else tended to me. I never got a chance to thank the medical staff personally, I was pretty hyped up on meds when I got back to the track Saturday and just felt like sleeping. So if you know any of the staff that assisted please send them a personal thank you from me. I would do it myself, but...well I dont even know what they look like!! I am an EMT back here at home and deal with high stress incident such as these, but I've never been on the other end of it. So please let them know that I greatly appreciate all they provided me. I must say each race weekend that I attend I will now make sure the medical staff gets a handshake, its the least I can do. Oh, and tell them thanks also for taking it easy with the trauma shears on my leathers. 8) The repair man said he should be able to take care of it. All in all, yourself, the cornerworkers, medical staff, Winchester Med. Center staff, and CCS Racing have no idea how grateful I am and they should truely be proud of themselves.

Hey firefighter 973, it was good to see ya up and about at the bike shop today, and as far as the broken foot goes...that was my fault.  You were screwin up the track day so bad by sleeping on turn 8, I came over and started kickin ya!  I'll send yer leathers off tommorrow for...surgery, should have em in bout a week.  Glad someone saw what happened and filled in the pieces.

You are most welcome. Next time you want to see the cornerworkers or medics you can find us next to the cafe in the morning, at lunch or at the end of the day. Its a lot less painfull!
Good luck with your recovery.

Road America Turn 5 250cc Crash No Brakes.

That was my friend Cory Hildebrand, He is a first year expert and 16 years old.  As one of you said..  the caliper was not wired and we suspect not tight after a tire change happened the night before.  I was comind down the hill in the braking zone and saw a rider running straight.... then I saw he was going very fast.  As I turned in... I noticed impact of the hay bales and his "Bus Kids" leathers being shot over the wall.  It took me half a lap to get him outta my head.....  it was scary to see for sure.

I talked to Cory and he broke his right hand and his right upper arm.  Hand is casted and the arm is in a sling.  Because of the break...  no surgury is necessary at this time.  6-8 Weeks and he should be ok.

He was VERY Lucky!

Wow - I think that the 250 into the tire wall with no brakes happened as I was entering the corner.  I know somebody flew past me way on the outside of the track just after I turned in - I saw it out of the corner of my eye and thought "I know those GP bikes can carry a lot of corner speed but what the hell is that kid thinking?"

I'm glad he is relatively OK, it really could have been a very, very bad incident...

I am very glad that he had the presence of mind to take the very outside line.  If somebody had been hit on the corner entrance I am relatively certain that somebody probably would have been killed...

ALLWAYS double check all the nuts and bolts and re-wire everything afer changing tires!

George

Very glad to hear he made it through "relatively" okay

:preachon: This is why I really think CCS should adopt more stringent safety wiring rules a la CRA, WERA, others...and require caliper bolts and axle pinch bolts be safety wired.  Granted, you're not going to tech your bike after a tire change, but having to safety wire those items adds that extra safety net that's sometimes required to make sure those simple things are done.

I'm paranoid about that stuff for my own safety and for others on the track.  Yeah, okay it's mainly for my own safety.

I could have done without seeing that.
(edit: thanks Dave!)

Might want to put a warning out there about opening the view.

I accept the CCS philosophy on what is required.  Granted, having a more stringient policy on safety wiring may save just 1 persons life and then it's worthwhile.  But there has to be a certain amount of individual responsibility that you wouldn't ride an unsafe bike on the track.

That bike could have come through Tech with the caliper bolts safety wired (maybe it did for all I know).  1 tire change after Tech inspection and you don't have Big Brother to look over your shoulder to check up on you.

I'm glad the kid came through a horrible situation with relatively minor injuries.  He was very lucky.

And hopefully everyone reading this will take an extra second to check over their bike one more time before going out on the track.

Now you're back to individual responsibility.
