I'm on a 2005 Honda 600rr for the first time.
What gearing would be recommended for a starting point?
Thanks much!
- Bob
Bob - i would start at a 17 - 24.... Jk - honestly i don't have any idea - but i do know that the Honda 600's don't make much low or mid - and thats not going to help matters much since your going to have to gear the bike tall enough to stay out of the rev limiter while still keeping the R's low enough to still make power at the end of the straight. Most bikes quit making power about 500 RPM or sobefore redline. Entering turn 1 - and prolly more pronounced would be turn 5 cause of the down hill approach.
I'll be there starting Wednesday - through Sunday. We can talk - when are you heading up?
My best guess for your bike (which by the way I know little about) as a good starting point for Road America, would be the stock gear ratio.
How did your father's day trackday go?
Hey guys,
Thanks for the input. I think stock gearing is it for starting out.
I'm going up Thursday eve. Plan to race Fri, Sat, Sun. Can't wait. I'm thinking of doing a HW class or two just to be in light grids. Even though I'll be way out motored - it's only my second time out on the bike and WOW what a freaking HUGE/COOL difference than the SV. Did Putnam for a Saturday on Fathers Day weekend. Was a blast. I can't believe how amazingly different the 600 is (and yes, I know the Honda isn't even a top bike in this class).
My analogy:
- Riding the SV is/was like riding a bottle rocket.
- The 600rr is like riding a laser-guided missle. Woooohoooo!!!
Don't know why I waited so long. Wish I made the transition years ago.
Jason - I didn't get to hook up with your guy due to schedules. But i'd like to get his number again. I'm thinking he might be a good option to do maintenance in between races/trackdays for me - and also give it the once over since I bought it used. I'd like to have someone really put it though a fine tooth comb.
Scotty see you at RA.
Jason are you going?
BTW - I'm going to be pitting with Mike Gardner and the bunch that he hangs out with...
Let me know what area you're going to set up pit at and we'll try to set up camp in the same neighborhood.
Not trying to threadjack.
I am heading up to RA with Quillman #32.
Gearing for a 2006 1K?
Can I get away with stock rear and -1 in the front?
TIA
I'd start with 16/46 or 15/43... but kinda depends on your speed and riding style.
doh... Just realized I already replied to this on the NESBA forum... :kicknuts:
If you want to try something different track me down (yellow plated #82 - Copper & Black 05 600rr, I'll be there Wednesday night) I have some spare gears.
Yep, I'll be there Thursday evening as well, don't know where I'll be pitted as of yet but will look for you when we get there.
Glad to hear your happy with the new ride. Bottle rockets and missiles  :lmao: can't wait to hear your analogy for the difference between the classes as far as racing etiquette.

I'll be there as well and I plan on running 16/42 maybe 43 with a 120/70 PRC front and a 190/55 medium-soft rear on my 2005 GSXR 1k. If you're running a 190/50 you'll want to adjust your gearing for the smaller tire size.
I've heard about the "animal" class!
Does anyone know if Lithium is going to be at RA?
I've left him a few messages haven't heard back yet.

Yep, Talked to rob last week, Lithium will be there.
Hmm - Gearing on the 06 GSXR 1000??? Screw it - I'm running mine bone stock - everything - except pads - clip ons and bodywork...... I'm interested to see what lap times I can turn on the big bike compared to what I just did on the 600 at the AMA.... Bob - as far as parking goes - I think I will be pitted up top in the motorhome section - I'm going to be staying in Meghan's parents motorhome....
You have pads?
Or did you just buy Maxi pads?

Why buy, when one could borrow from you?
Oh - we have plenty of Maxi Pads for my mechanic Keith - Actually we got them at the "Brown Bear" in Elkhart Lake... But seriously - I finally got some pads for the beast.....

We have them for your big bleeding hole.

You're telling me to get a life?, classic. You made my day super.

Don't count on it. The draft plays a huge part at RA, my ZX6 will hang on to a 750 as long as I get in the draft.
Just crawl under the paint and let them suck you down the track.
Plus there is no light grids at RA. everyone will be there.....
Good luck.
I think Jeff's gonna have to separate SD and Garth... again.

Glad your getting to race the old ride. I kinda miss it some. I think others have steered you right. I would start with 15 F 43 R to start with. Have fun, if I wasn't hitting a MRA race, I'd be there.
Brent
I just put a two teeth smaller rear sprocket on my 06 R6 to bring me to -1/45 but man, it moved that tire back a lot!
How badly will this affect my handling? I guess it would be better to have a longer wheelbase at RA anyway?
I believe stock gearing for an 06 R6 is 16/45 (or 281 ratio). What do you mean by -1/45? Do you mean 15/45 (or 300 ratio)? If so then a 16 up front will move the rear axle up a little and get you closer to where you need to be gearing wise (by the way, I usually do run a slightly longer wheel base at RA as part of my set-up).
Other wise if you need to get there with a 15 up front you'd need to run a 42 (280) or 43 (286) rear (you'd probably need to shorten the chain). I don't like doing this because both sprockets are so small that the chain really rides the chain guide.

Thanks for the Info Jason. Yes, I meant 1 down in the front cause I couldn't remember what stock was. :ahhh:
I don't have the option of a 16 up front, so 15/45 will have to do for me.

I'm not sure if I have an extra 16 or not, if you stop by at RA and remind me I'll check for ya, you can try it and if you like it you can use it for the weekend.

Cool! Thanks, I may look you up.
How does a 15/47 sound for an '04 R6 at Road America? I beleive that's -1/-1 from stock.

I'd have to check my notes from 04 but I have always run stock or -1 in the rear (with stock front) at Road America.
Road America is a huge track - something like 4 mile lap. It has a very long straight. I don't think gearing taller then stock is the way to go.
I believe stock 04 R6 is 16/48 (or 300 ratio)
15/47 (or 313 ratio) is taller than stock, you'll most likely run out of gear on the straight.
Hope this helps

I run 15-47 at summit point and the front straight is about 1300 feet shorter at summit so stock or -1 in the rear sounds like a good place to start
Thanks guys, I'll have to see if I can find a 16t 520 front at the track. The only pain is the stupid crush washer that is on there. I think I'm pretty much stuck running Friday's races 15/47, unless I can find a 45t rear and not use up the remaining 3 full lines i have to back my rear axle up.
Ok, now I have 16/47 or stock/-1 rear and I'll see how that feels tomorrow. Worst case, I'll still have my 15 front and 49 rear to play with too.
I've got an 05 600rr
I first tried 15/43 and was having mid turn shifting issues for t5 and the bend after the carousel
rev limit was always reached at t1 or t5
then I tried 15/46 and I liked the ability to not have to go into a lower gear to drive out but I hit rev Way before t1, t5 and canada corner was a rev lim waiting to happen
Talked with Rob at Lithium and he said he'd sell me the halfway gear I was asking for for the rear but it was at minimum a
16/43 (stock gearing) that needs to be run and if it becomes a need 16/42
told me to carry more speed through the corners and throttle better on my exits and I already knew he was right.
Said if I want to remain competitive that is what's needed to be done when it come to gearing.
That you need to gear for Gaining Speed on the straights after a powerful exit/acceleration.
yeah, he was right
I ran my stock gearing and was able to get 7th in Unlimited Superbike on saturday the 7th with my 600rr on a literbike's track
